The Debs is a terrific book to read if you love girl stories like “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”, “Mean Girls”, “Gossip Girl” and “Heathers”. It’s a excellent “chick lit” book.
The Debs is the story of four Texas teenagers who are up and coming debutantes, Laura, Michelle, Ginger and the mean girl herself, Jo-Lynn. They are to become a part of the Glass Slipper Club.
My favorite character is Laura. Laura Delacroix Bell is a plus size girl (which is why I can relate to her) who has a secret that could keep her from becoming part of the Glass Slipper Club. Boys also can’t resist her, even if she is “larger” then most of the other debutantes in the Glass Slipper Club.
Her archenemy is Jo-Lynn Bidwell. She is a former beauty queen and the meanest of the mean who is bent on destroying Laura.
Ginger Fore is a nice character too. She only wants to be a part of the society because she is a huge environmentalist and she feels she could use her position for the greater good, however her actions might make her end up in jail before becoming part of the Glass Slipper Club. I’m sure a lot of people can relate to her too because she really cares about our environment.
Another very sweet character is Michelle Mckenzie. Her friends call her “Mac”. She recently lost her beloved mother. She doesn’t care about all the “glitz and glamour” that comes from being a part of the Glass Slipper Club. She’s only doing it to fulfill her late mother’s dream for her.
The characters are all very likable, except Jo-Lynn who is super mean. I’m sure we have all known people like her in our lives. All the characters are very appealing and we might see our own qualities in the characters or know someone like them.
I enjoy the style of writing too. It’s written from the point of view of the girls. It was a lot of fun.I liked the book so much I finished it in two days. It has you cheering, booing, and wondering what will happen next. I truly enjoy page turners!
My ‘tween daughter read this and she loved it too. I would say this is best for teens and adults unless you have a ‘tween like mine who is into young adult books like the “Twilight” series.
There are more books in the series. My daughter has already asked me to get the next installment for her. She’s anxious to read more.
Susan McBride has generously offered one lucky She Scribes winner a copy of this fantastic book. But even better yet – it comes with some “bling“. After all, Deb’s need their glitz and glamour, right? But I’m not going to tell you what it is. Let’s just say it’s fit for a true debutante.
