Bright Star Kids

No matter what the age most children LOVE to doodle and write with chalk. Even adults suddenly regress into a child when given the opportunity to play around with chalk. I know I sure do! It’s fun. It’s inexpensive. It encourages creativity. Playing with chalk is ideal in so many ways.

We are in the process of redoing our kids room. Sadly we only have a one bedroom condo so my ‘tween daughter and young son have to share the bedroom. We honestly have no done any updating in their room other things new windows, AC and ceiling fan. We have yet to paint and put down new carpet.

Thanks to the lovely economy we can’t afford new carpeting but we will be painting the kids room as soon as we can all decide on a color (easier said then done with you have a girl and a boy). When we finally paint their room we’re going to get them some shelves for their things (trophies, pictures…) and a cork board to hang up their pictures and “stuff”. We also have for them chalk “dots” which are the coolest thing!

Our chalk dots came from a company called Bright Star Kids. It’s an Australian based company but they ship to places all over the world. Don’t let the fact they are in Australia prevent you from purchasing from them. I checked the shipping rates and to ship Wall Graphics from Australia to the United States is about $10, which is not bad at all! You’d pay close to that amount ordering something from within the US or Canada too, so it works out about the same.

Photobucket

Our wall dots are totally cool! My kids LOVE them! We have the bright cherry and sunflower color combination. My kids cannot wait for us to paint the room so they each have their own “dots” to play with and write notes to themselves. Right now they are sharing a “dot” which I put on their door until we pain the room.

The great thing about the chalk dots is that they come with solid (non-chalk) dots too so you can create a really fun design by putting all the dots up individually or overlapping each other or using the solid dots as backgrounds. The possibilities are endless!

The chalkboard dots come in packages of 8. There are four solid color dots (which are larger) and four chalk dots. What I plan on doing is “arching” the solid dots over the beds and putting one chalk dot on either side of their beds. That is of course unless I keep one or two for myself.

Currently I have a chalk dot and a solid dot on my fridge. It’s a great way to write notes and shopping lists. I leave notes for my hubby on it all the time now that we have it on the fridge. I’m thinking of putting another one next to my desk on the wall so I can jot down notes, like appointments, so that I have them in a place I am always reminded of them. I’m horrible at remembering appointments and having it right there next to me will help me to stay organized and keep on track.

Photobucket

I was worried that the dots would be hard to remove but they are not. They peel off easily enough. Just be sure to keep the backing paper if you are not going to hang them up again right away. If you accidentally throw the paper out you could try wax paper.

The chalkboard dots are not permanent at all. You can remove them at any time to put them in a different room or to configure them a different way.

The chalkboard dots work GREAT! You can write on them the same way you would a chalkboard. They also wipe clean easily too. We use a paper towel or a dish cloth and every few days I wipe it with a damp wash cloth.

Imagine how much FUN your child would have with the chalkboard dots all over their playroom, or even in their bedroom. They are just the right size for little hands (and not so little hands).

The chalkboard dots also come in panels for more space. I would imagine they would look awesome going around a room like a “chair rail”. That would be neat!

The chalkboard dots come in the colors we have (cherry and sunflower) and also blue/lime and pink/violet. I’m thinking about getting a set in each color combination and using them to decorate the kid’s room. I know my daughter would love that. She loves colorful polka dots. Even if they outgrow the chalkboard dots the solid color dots make great wall accents/art too!

Bright Star Kids has a wonderful assortment of other wall graphics for your home including a princess set, farm set, under the sea set and so much more.

Eco to Go

When it comes to environment I prefer to patronize companies who are making an effort to do all they can to reduce waste, recycle and Earth friendly. I am willing to pay a little more for Eco-Friendly products and fair trade products.

Whenever I learn about a great product, service or company who are doing their part to help protect our environment I love to everyone I know about them.

I recently learned about a new program, currently in place here in New York City called Eco to Go. Eco to Go is encouraging restaurants and take our places to reduce waste by eliminating the excess and unnecessary “extras” they include with orders including napkins and plastic utensils. Think about it. If you have Chinese food delivered to your door WHY do you need plastic eating utensils and napkins? Was it wrong with using your own utensils and napkins? The same would apply to orders you pick up. If you are only taking the food back home to eat or back to your office why do you need the napkins and utensils? If you eat a lot of take out at work why not consider bringing in some utensils from home and keep them in your desk?

By making a conscious effort to eliminate all the unnecessary packaging we could literally save millions of tons of paper and plastic each year. It also helps protect the rain forests by reducing the number of trees that need to be destroyed to make all the paper waste.

Many restaurants and take out places in NYC are already on board with Eco to Go. Even if you do not like in NYC you can still practice the Eco to Go idea by advising restaurants and take out places that you do not want napkins or eating utensils with your order. Perhaps if you explain to them WHY you don’t want those unnecessary items they might take notice and start making it a common practice NOT to offer them in the future.

Here are some pretty scary statistics about the waste generated from all those unneeded napkins and plastic utensils.

• Almost 1/3 of the waste generated in the U.S. is from packaging. Plastics take 1000 years to decompose.

• The U.S. population tosses out enough paper & plastic cups, forks and spoons every year to circle the equator 300 times.

• Paper comes from trees, plastic comes for oil (petroleum) to obtain either one, worldwide forests are being contaminated and destroyed.

There are benefits for restaurants who opt to put Eco to Go in place. Restaurants and delis can save money by buying less napkins and utensils and to only give them to customers who request them. Customers will also be more attracted to a business who cares about the environment.

To learn more about Eco to Go you can visit their web site by going to www.EcoAgents.org then click on Eco to Go on the right side bar.

If you are a restaurant, deli or take out place and would like more information on how you can become a member of Eco to Go please contact: Fabian Lliguin at info@ecoagents.org or called (212) 464-7806.

OH What a FUN! FUN! FUN! Day!!!

Zing! Zang! Zoom! WOW! WOW! WOW!!!!! We had an amazing day today! I’m still “high” from the adrenaline rush and it’s after 10 PM!

Today we headed into Manhattan (NYC) to Madison Square Garden Arena to see the Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus. I haven’t seen this circus since I was about 9 (30+ years ago). My kids have only seen a small circus that was set up in the mall parking lot. My dear husband has never seen a circus before.

The weather started out rather “iffy”. It was suppose to rain today, but not until late afternoon. When we headed into the city it was very over cast and “gloomy” outside.

Photobucket

We took the West Side Highway. The ride SHOULD have taken about 30-40 minutes, but we hit some traffic so it took a wee bit longer. On our way down we passed the Intrepid Air & Space Museum. This is an actual US Navy Ship that is now a museum. It’s on our list of things to do some day. We also passed a HUGE cruise ship docked right next to the Intrepid called the Norway Gem. WOW! It was ENORMOUS!

Thankfully my husband knew how to get to Madison Square Garden. His company has an office right across the street.

Getting a parking spot took up a lot of time. We had to have valet parking inside the parking lot (you could not park your own car). Because the of time spent getting a parking spot and the traffic on the way down we were running late for the circus. The show didn’t start until 11 AM but if we got there an hour earlier we could go right down on the stage and meet some of the circus performers, see an Elephant painting and meet the Ring Master himself. Sadly by the time we got our tickets it was about 15 minutes before the show started.

I haven’t been inside Madison Square Garden in about 30+ years so I really don’t remember much about it. GOOD GOLLY! The place is HUGE! Thankfully no matter where you sat you were guaranteed a good view.

I tried to snap some pictures but it was hard in the dim light. Here is the stage just before the show began.

Photobucket

It’s hard to tell from the picture just how HUGE this place is!

My kids asked for popcorn before the show. The boxes were as large as a cereal box so we just got two figuring the four of us could share. They were $7 EACH! So it cost $14 for two popcorns. But if you break it down for four people it came to $3.50 per person which is not so bad. It’s more then that for movie theater popcorn. Below is a picture of the popcorn box. How cute!

Photobucket

The show started pretty much exactly at 11 AM.

Where do I begin! There was so much action and excitement! Oh my goodness!!!

The magic tricks were AMAZING! They made an ELEPHANT DISAPPEAR! Right before our eyes. Poof! A real elephant disappeared. They also made a dog disappear and turned a man into a tiger!

We were in total awe of the magic acts. They had children from the audience come on to the stage with a parent and the kids actually made their parents levitate! The Ring Master even used a hoop to go back and forth over the parents to show you nothing was holding them up.

They stretched a man out of shape! And poked holes into another man with metal pokers that were ON FIRE! Of course the man popped out of the box perfectly OK. And a lade went through solid steal. AMAZING!

The dogs were not only amazing but funny too. They had a dancing dog and dogs doing the most amazing high jumps. We can’t get our own dog to sit let alone do a conga line with other dogs. One little dog kept going over to the other side. It was funny!

They brought out both gorgeous horses and ZEBRAS! I didn’t know you could train a Zebra! It was so cool. We loved the horses. I was so nervous the man was going to get trampled. One of the beautiful Arabian horses even hopped out of the ring like a rabbit. WOW!

Photobucket

Of course they had a high wire act. My husband was totally in awe of this. He’s never seen one before. One performer almost looked like he was going to fall but he was doing it intentionally to get the audience on the edge of their seats. I have seen acts like this before but it never fails to amaze me. Especially when they ride a Unicycle across the tight rope. WOW!

Photobucket

They shot a lady out of a cannon not once, but twice! The first time they shot her from a smaller cannon. It was dark and you heard the “BOOM!” and a streak of light go through the air but the lady never made it to the landing spot (a giant balloon type thing). They turned on the lights and she was no where to be found! Oh my!!!! It turns out she was way up high where the overhead lights were. How in the world did she get up there? AMAZING!!!! She even JUMPED down from there too! I’m telling you… it was a sight to see! How did she get up on top of the lighting area?

The next time they shot her from a HUGE cannon. We all got to see her shoot across the entire stage. How do they do that?

Photobucket

If you look closely in the picture you can see her standing at the tip of the large cannon.

During intermission my husband ran to the bathroom. There was no way I was going to attempt the ladies room. I’m sure it was a mob scene.

When my husband got back he got one of the vendors that were roaming around to come up to where were were sitting to sell us some cotton candy (my husband LOVES cotton candy). It was $12!!! Yikes! But again, it was split four ways so it came to $3 per person which wasn’t so bad. It also came with a wizard hat that had the Ringling Brothers name on it. My kids (and my silly husband) all took turns wearing it.

Photobucket

After the intermission (which was about 15-20 minutes) the show started again.

There were these REALLY COOL “swing” like things that the performers where using. It’s hard to explain. They were like swinging planks that they swung from and did flips from and went back and forth on them. I don’t know what they were called but they would be fun to have in the playground. LOL! At one point one of the performers jumped from one to another (while they were moving) through a hoop of FIRE! I was actually able to catch that in a photo (if you look closely you can see the man inside the ring of fire).

Photobucket

Next up was the elephants. I love! love! love the elephants! I’m totally amazed how they can get these massive creatures to stand on top of those little stands. At one point the elephants sat on them as if they were chairs. I think my husband loved the elephants as much as I did. My kids were just speechless from the start.

Photobucket

Not too long after the elephants came the BEAUTIFUL tigers. I tell you, they were making me nervous! I kept thinking that seeing the trainer mauled by the exotic beasts was NOT part of the program. THANKFULLY it never happened but a few of the Tigers did NOT look too happy with him. Unless of course they are all just big babies and it’s part of the act. Some of the circus people surrounded the ring with FIRE EXTINGUISHERS! I guess that is what they use on the animals if they get out of control. That was interesting. I’m sorry the photo was fuzzy. It was hard to get a good one at such a distance in low light and through a metal mesh fence around the Tiger ring.

Photobucket

Another incredible act was these two men who were on these round wheel type things that spun around (very fast too!). They would walk inside them, then out side of them and one even jumped rope on the outside of it as it was spinning around and around. WOW! WOW! WOW! Our jaws just dropped to the floor!

Photobucket

For the grand final all the performers and clowns came out, including all the elephants. The entire stage was alive with action, performances, lights, colors, music… EVERYTHING!

Photobucket

I was very sad to see the show end. We were all having such a great time. It lasted for about 2 1/2 hours (give or take). From the moment it started until the moment it ended it was an eye popping, super exciting, edge of your seat, fun entertaining time! I would do it again in a heart beat!

When we were leaving the people coming from the afternoon show were arriving. FYI… if you decide to go to the circus go to the early show. The afternoon show was a mad house with all the people. The parking garage was a nightmare to get out of because everyone was coming to the circus and were parking too. There were certainly A LOT more people for the afternoon performance.

After the show we decided to walk over to the Empire State Building and just take in the sites and sounds of the city. We even stopped for some pretzels and water from a side walk vendor.

Photobucket

It was the PERFECT day! I’m so happy that we went to the circus today! If you have a chance to see the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus I HIGHLY recommend it! We had an amazing time and it’s something that our family is going to remember for the rest of ours lives. It was a magical day and will always be very special to us.

You can find out more about the Circus and see if it’s coming to a town near you by visiting their web site at http://www.ringling.com/. Click on the “Find a Show Near You” at the bottom of the page.

Below is a video I made using more pictures from today. There are more circus shots and some random shots from around the city.

What a PERFECT day!

Where the Wild Things Are

I’m getting ready to get ready to leave for NYC now to go and see the circus (yeah!) but I wanted to share this with my readers in case anyone is interested.

I just learned that they made a live action film of the classic children’s book, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. I just watched the teaser trailer and it looks SO GOOD!

If you are a fan of the book then you will probably love to see this movie too. I know I want to see it. I might have to wait until it comes on DVD (movies are so much $$$).

Below is the trailer. For those of you reading this in e-mail or on RSS you will have to come to my blog to see it. It’s only about a minute or two long.

We’re Going to the Circus!

Yeah! We’re heading off to the Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus tomorrow (Saturday) at Madison Square Garden in New York City. I haven’t been to the Ringling Brothers Circus since I was about 9 (I’m 40!). My husband has NEVER been to a Circus before. My kids haven’t been to a Circus in about 6+ years. That Circus was one of those ones that set up in mall parking lots.

Needless to say it’s going to be exciting!

I hope the weather holds out. It’s suppose to rain but hopefully it won’t rain until late in the evening, long after we got home.

If the weather holds up OK we’ll take the kids over to see Macys afterwards. It’s only a hop skip and a jump from Madison Square Garden. The kids see Macys when we watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade so it would be fun for them to see it in person. They also know about Macys from “Miracle on 34th Street” that we watch each holiday season.

I’d love to take the kids to the observation tower at the Empire State Building but for the four of us to go up top it will cost a whopping $76! My husband joked that it’s cheaper to look up then it is to look down… ha ha. So we won’t be going to the observation deck but at least the kids can see the Empire State Building up close.

It’s pretty sad that we live about 30-45 minutes (depending on traffic) from Manhattan and we rarely venture there. The kids have never seen the Statue of Liberty either. Sigh… we’re bad parents (just kidding).

I have another great giveaway to post tomorrow when we get back for some great Energizer batteries, which I’ll be testing out a lot tomorrow when I take a zillion pictures. I also have to tell you about a really fun “Hall of Fame” program Energizer batteries has going on.

I’ll tell you all about the Circus tomorrow when we get home.
