Old Spice Gift Sets – An "Oldie" but a "Goodie".

When I was younger and I didn’t have much money (what teen does?). When the holidays came around I always searched high and low for something nice and affordable that I could give my father and my grandfather. Usually I would pick up a bottle of cologne or some kind of shaving related product. Almost always it would be Old Spice or an Old Spice product. Because of that I can usually tell if someone is wearing Old Spice in a room full of people. I grew up on the Old Spice scent. As odd as it sounds the scent reminds me of the holidays.

Fast forward 30+ years and Old Spice is still around and still making holiday gifts sets for the special men in your life. What I love about the Old Spice gift sets is that they are affordable and you get a lot of “goodies” in the set.

Old Spice has a scent I have never heard of before called Swagger. I have never smelled it before. It’s nice! I really like it. It’s not over powering like a cologne, but it does have a nice subtle scent which I found very appealing.

Old Spice sent me a Swagger gift set to try out. The set included…

1 – Deodorant (92 g)
1 – Body Spray (113 g)
1 – Body Wash (355 mL)
1 – NEW 16-Hour Odor Blocking Body Wash (50 mL)
1 – Deck Scrubber Shower Tool

This great set retails for $9.99! That is pretty affordable if you ask me. The set is pictured above.

My husband was happy to try it out for me, as was my 10 year old son. When it comes to “grown up” things my son is always quick to want to be included. He very much wants to be just like my husband. It was funny watching the two of them fighting over the set. LOL! My husband ended up with the deodorant and the 16 hour body wash. My son got the body spray and the scrubber. They both share the body wash.

My husband found the scent very appealing. He said it doesn’t smell like the Old Spice his mom used to give him for the holidays. He said he likes the Swagger scent. He was also pleased with the performance of the deodorant. He had no complaints about it at all.

My husband is not big on body washes but he tried out the Swagger body wash and he said it was nice. He liked the scent (he said it was subtle in the shower) and that is rinses off good. He said it made him feel like he was in a fancy spa because he’s used to just using Irish Spring soap.

As for the 16 hour deodorant body wash it’s hard to say if it lasted 16 hours. He tried it several times and had no complaints. He also doesn’t have a job that causes him to build up a sweat (he’s a computer tech) so it’s hard to say how effective it was.

My son was on cloud nine with the body spray. In fact I had to take it away from him because he was spraying it on himself several times a day and using it as a room air freshener. I guess he liked the scent a little too much.

I asked him if the kids in school noticed the scent. He said one boy asked him if he was wearing cologne but no one else really noticed. I guess it’s because he’s only in 5th grade. It’s not common place for young children to wear colognes and scented body sprays.

My son did ask me if he could get another set for Christmas. I guess the Old Spice holiday gift set tradition carries on in my family, this time with my son.

The Old Spice Holiday Gift Sets are a nice, affordable gift for that special man in your life, young or old.

The Flights of Marceau: Race to the Rescue (Giveaway)

I just finished reading a really fun, fast paced, exciting children’s book called The Flights of Marceau: Race to the Rescue, written by Joe Brown. Joe Brown is the father of famed make up artist Bobbi Brown.

The Flights of Marceau: Race to the Rescue is about a New Orleans taxi cab driver name Marceau. To escape the “ho-hum” boredom of his every day life Marceau likes to create elaborate adventures in his mind. He gets so engrossed in his stories that he even shares them with the people who ride in his taxi cab.

One day a horrible hurricane threatens the city of New Orleans. Worried about their safety the residents flee for their lives. In the hustle and bustle of the mass exodus of fleeing the city people forgot about the animals left behind. Most especially the animals at the zoo.

Marceau, fearing for the safety of the zoo animals, races to their rescue to save the zoo animals from the hurricane and from starvation.

Will he succeed? Will Marceau make it to the zoo in time? You’ll just have to read the book yourself to find out.

I really enjoyed this book a lot. To start with the illustrations are fantastic. They really help to capture your imagination and really help to bring the adventurous story to life.

The Flights of Marceau: Race to the Rescue is a rhyming book with children really seem to enjoy. For example Marceau rides on a Cheetah name Rita. I kept having those words go over and over in my head. They almost turned into a song…Rita, the Cheetah… (LOL). I love how the words seemed so lyrical and they flowed so perfectly along with the story.

This is a quick read and would be a lot of fun to read to your child at bedtime. Who knows, they might dream that they are a hero like Marceau and help save the day.

The Flights of Marceau: Race to the Rescue is available from Scholastic. The book is currently on sale on Scholastic’s online bookstore (http://store.scholastic.com). Scholastic is also having a special Thanksgiving sale (ends December 6, 2009) where you can get 20% off your total order over $25.00 AND FREE SHIPPING. Use the special code SSTGS upon checkout.

Rock-a-Thon – Raising Money for Sick Children

Photobucket

I don’t normally post press releases. I get dozens of them sent to me each week. Although I think it’s great to learn about a new product or service and share that information with my readers, I don’t want my blog to be one press release after another. However this press release is different. I feel that it’s very important to share this information with my readers, especially because it’s for a very good cause. Thank you for understanding.

Rock Band™ Band to Play 90 Hours Straight for Charity
Band to Set Guinness World Record (Gamer’s Edition) for Longest Relay Rock Band Concert

ST. LOUIS (Nov. 25, 2009) – The sun will have rotated on its axis more than three times, nearly 1.4 million babies will have been born worldwide and most Americans will have almost worked a full week by the time 16 Rock Band aficionados will have played Rock Band for 90 hours straight in their quest to become the Guinness World Record-Holder (Gamer’s Edition) for the Longest Relay Rock Band Concert – all while raising money for Child’s Play charity.

The event, known as The Rock-A-Thon powered by Energizer® Advanced Lithium, will begin on Friday, Nov. 27 at 12:05 a.m., when the first set of Rock Band™ players take the stage at the Meridian in Houston, Texas for the 90-hour marathon. Players include several professional gamers such as Robert Paz, a.k.a Prodigy X, Ciji “StaySlayer” Thorton and Internet sensation and Guitar Hero II World Series of Video Games Champion Freddie Wong.

“We are excited to have some of the most renowned video gamers playing alongside us as we try to set the Guinness World Record for Longest Relay Rock Band concert,” said Paul Slawinski, President and Co-Founder of The Rock-A-Thon. “We hope people come out to watch the action and to help raise money for Child’s Play.”

For every fan that attends the epic 90-hour charity concert, Energizer, The Rock-A-Thon’s presenting sponsor, will donate $1 to Child’s Play, up to $5,000. Child’s Play is a community-based charity grown and nurtured from the game culture and industry. The charity donates toys, video games, books and cash for sick kids in children’s hospitals across North America.

“Now more than ever, charities are in need assistance, so we are thrilled to power The Rock-A-Thon and help raise money for Child’s Play,” said Jim Olsen, Vice President of Marketing, North America for Energizer. “Our Energizer® Advanced Lithium batteries will allow for hours and hours of uninterrupted game play, helping The Rock-A-Thon rockers raise money and reach their record.”

Energizer® Advanced Lithium batteries provide 20 additional hours* of continuous playing time in wireless gaming accessories. In addition to offering long-lasting power, Energizer® Advanced Lithium has a shelf life of 10 years and weighs 33 percent less than an ordinary alkaline battery. The entire 90-hour performance will be streamed live at www.therockathon.com.

Going for the Record
The Rock-A-Thon members will be setting the first world record for the Longest Relay Rock Band concert. The event will kick-off with four of the 16 Rock-A-Thon members playing a seven-song set. After the opening set, the group will play in 50-song shifts of four people – one vocalist, one guitarist, one bassist, one drummer – plus two additional people for The Beatles™: Rock Band™ songs (which require three-part harmony in addition to the instruments). All songs will be played on the “expert setting.” After the full 90 hours is complete, The Rock-A-Thon members will have played more than 1,050 songs.

The event will be recorded and documented for submission to Twin Galaxies, the World’s official scorekeepers of video gaming records, according to Guinness World Records.

In addition to the donation made by Energizer, The Rock-A-Thon will be selling official “The Rock-A-Thon” t-shirts for $25 and raffle tickets for prizes like a year’s worth of Energizer® Advanced Lithium batteries. All proceeds will benefit Child’s Play. The event is free and open to the public.

* Compared to Energizer® MAX®. Results vary by play and/or usage patterns.

Fun, Fashionable and Whimsical Mice from Mousenvy (Giveaway!)

Those of you reading in e-mail or RSS will have to come to the site to see the video found at the top of this post.

Photobucket

Move over boring little gray computer mouse. Make room for computer mice from Mousenvy that are not only fun but also reflect the computer users personality.

Mousenvy (http://www.mousenvy.com/) offers really fun mice designs from shapes to artistic designs to limited edition “blinged out” mice.

When I was asked if I wanted to review a mouse from Mousenvy I was thrilled. I checked out the site and saw so many adorable mice. It was hard to choose which was my favorite. Mousenvy ended up sending me an adorable Ladybug mouse. I think that was rather fitting since my kids are terrified of Ladybugs. I have even blogged about their unnatural fear of the cute little round critters. I’m pretty sure no one has been viciously attacked or eaten alive by a little Ladybug. Ha Ha.

Photobucket

I was so excited when the Ladybug mouse arrived. It was easy enough to swap out my current mouse for the Mousenvy mouse. All I had to do was unplug the one I was using and plug the Ladybug in it’s place. It was that easy. There was no special software or thing I needed to download. Just plug it in and you are ready to surf the web.

The Ladybug mouse is considerably smaller then the regular mouse I was using. At first I thought it was going to be hard to get use to. It was in the beginning but after a while I honestly didn’t know the difference. The Mousenvy mouse is also more lightweight compared to a regular mouse too.

The Ladybug mouse from Mousenvy works just like a regular mouse. I right or left click on her little head (buttons).

I think the Ladybug mouse is a lot of fun. It adds a splash of fun and whimsy to my desk. It’s hard not to smile when you see the little Ladybug greeting you and your computer in the morning. The bright red color also adds a bit of color to my normally dark and dreary desk. Even my kids who are terrified of Ladybugs love the Ladybug mouse.

I’m giving the Ladybug mouse from Mousenvy a “two thumbs up”. I think this is a fun gift to give to a ‘tween, teen, computer geek or nerd or to someone who likes Ladybugs, Dogs, Cats or any of the other fun shapes and designs that Mousenvy offers.

Unique Thanksgiving Leftovers Recipes & Giveaway!

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone I’m sure many of you are looking for interesting things to do with the leftovers. I know I’m content with a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce, but I’m always open to trying out something new.

How about putting an Asian twist on your leftovers this year? How about some Turkey Curry Pot Pie and Turkey Fried Rice?

Red Curry Turkey Pot Pie

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes

1 can (14 ounces) Thai Kitchen® Coconut Milk
1/2 cup water
2 packages (.87 oz. each) turkey gravy mix, such as McCormick® Turkey Gravy Mix
1 tablespoon Thai Kitchen® Red Curry Paste
3 cups cubed cooked turkey
2 cups frozen mixed vegetables
1 refrigerated pie crust (from 15-ounce package)

1. Mix coconut milk and water in large saucepan. Add gravy mix and curry paste; stir until well blended. Bring to boil on medium heat, stirring frequently. Stir in turkey and vegetables. Return to boil. Reduce heat to low; simmer 5 minutes.

2. Spoon into 9-inch deep dish pie plate or 2-quart baking dish. Top with pie crust. Seal edges and cut several slits on top.

3. Bake in preheated 425°F oven 25 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Makes 8 servings.

Turkey Fried Rice

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup sliced red onion
2 cups cold cooked Thai Kitchen® Jasmine Rice
1/2 cup frozen vegetables, such as corn, carrots or peas
1 tablespoon Thai Kitchen® Premium Fish Sauce
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup shredded cooked turkey
1/4 cup chopped green onions

1. Heat oil in large skillet or wok on medium heat. Add onion; cook and stir 3 minutes or until tender.

2. Stir in rice, vegetables, fish sauce and sugar; cook and stir 3 minutes or until rice is heated through. Add turkey and green onions; cook and stir until heated through. Sprinkle with chopped fresh cilantro and serve with lime wedges, if desired.

Makes 4 servings.

Photobucket

Don’t they sound delish? I happen to have the ingredients necessary to make both of the recipes. Now I just have to talk my picky eater of a husband into “stepping outside of his comfort zone” to try it. I happen to like Asian foods. Thai Kitchen, which is carried in most grocery stores, makes a variety of products to add a bit of Asian flair to your meals.

How about some great drink recipes? Egg Nog is fine but how about spicing things up this holiday season with a little Coconut Milk Hot Chocolate and Coconut Almond Hot Mocha?

Coconut Milk Hot Chocolate

Prep Time: 5 minutes

1 can (14 ounces) Thai Kitchen® Coconut Milk
2 packets instant hot chocolate mix

1. Heat coconut milk in small saucepan until hot (not boiling). Remove from heat.
2. Stir in hot chocolate mix until dissolved. Serve immediately. Top with whipped cream, if desired.

Makes 2 (1-cup) servings.

Coconut Almond Hot Mocha

Prep Time: 5 minutes

1 can (14 ounces) Thai Kitchen® Coconut Milk
4 ounces semi-sweet baking chocolate, chopped
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
5 cups hot brewed coffee
Whipped cream and chocolate curls (optional)

1. Microwave coconut milk, chocolate and sugar in medium microwavable bowl on HIGH 2 to 3 minutes or until heated through. Stir until chocolate is completely melted and mixture is smooth. Stir in extracts.

2. Stir into hot brewed coffee. Pour into serving cups. Top with whipped cream and chocolate curls, if desired.

Makes 7 (1-cup) servings.

I actually tried both of these drink recipes. I LOVE! LOVE! LOVE the Coconut Almond Mocha drink. That one is especially delicious. I have never had anything like it before. I would have never thought about using coconut milk.

I have tried to make a few Thai recipes lately. It’s a hit or miss. Some turn out great, others sound better then they tasted. But I don’t mind. It’s fun to explore and try out new dishes from far off lands. You can find a lot of great recipes on the Thai Kitchen web site ( http://www.realasianmadesimple.com). They even have recipes that are Gluten-Free. Check out the American-Style Peanut Sauce. I made that. I was a little “iffy” on how it would taste using fish sauce but it was actually really good. I’m pretty proud of myself. It tasted as good as it did from a restaurant. It went GREAT with grilled chicken. I even learned how to make Chicken Satay which is incredibly easy.

This year forget about the boring old leftovers and jazz them up with some Thai Kitchen ingredients.
