Summer Boredom Buster (Giveaway)

We’re about a month into summer vacation (longer for others). Have you lost track of how many times your children have uttered those dreadful words…”Mom, I’m bored. What can I do?”. I think I stopped counting at around 800 times (I’m kidding…sort of).

My typical reply to the “I’m bored” statement is always “Go read a book” to which my children always have some crabby response like “Eww, no way” or “Reading is boring”. Sigh…

I know that most kids would rather not read when they can do something else. Even worst, kids will freak out on  you if you dare suggest something, gasp, EDUCATIONAL.

What if I told you that there was a great way to break out of the summer time boredom rut with books that were not only entertaining, but also educational?

I have three great book titles in mind.

- The Big Book of Fun. My family, including myself and my husband, fight over this book. It is filled with a lot of fun puzzles, mazes and games. My personal favorites are the “search” type puzzles where you have to look at a big picture and look for small details like something that is out of place or the missing part ot a pair. I know my husband likes doing the mazes. Oh yeah…the kids love the book too. LOL! I like to take it with us on long car rides.

- Weird But True. This is a must have book for any child. It’s filled with odd (and gross!) facts, 99.99% of them I have never heard of before. Some of them are pretty amazing too. Did you know that peanut butter can be converted into a diamond? Or that a dog can make about 100 different facial expressions? Or how about the fact that an elephant’s tooth can weigh as much as a bowling ball? Wow! That is pretty amazing. This book is over flowing with incredible facts.

- National Geographic Kids Almanac 2011- Introduced last year and updated for 2011, this best-selling almanac has quickly become the gold standard. We have both the 2010 and 2011 almanacs. I think these books are so amazing that I keep them in MY bookcase, otherwise the books might get buried, lost or dmanaged in the kid’s bookcase. As an adult I find this book fascinating. I loved the 2010 almanac and the 2011 version is even better! The 2011 almanac is about twice the size as last year’s edition. The book is overflowing with fun things and facts including more than 50 puzzles, projects ands cool experiments,  500 pictures of our planet and all that’s on it and the more than 5,000 fun and amazing facts.  Parents will love it because the book has chapters on science, geography and history. There are also more than 15 homework-helper sections too.

All three books can be found at most book retail locations. You can also visit the National Geographic Kids official website at http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/. To learn more about other National Geographic books visit their official website, www.NationalGeographic.com and click on the “Shop” tab on the top task bar.

Guess what? I have all three books to giveaway to a lucky reader. That is a $35 retail value (the almanac alone sells for $21.95). Thanks National Geographic Kids!

Since I have a 12 year old daughter, we do alot of beauty make-overs on each other for fun! For example, we’ll get out all our nail polishes and do crazy new looks. Right now, polka dots and stripes are our favorites!
