Admit it. Its early in August and you are probably getting bored with hamburgers and hot dogs at every barbecue that you go to. Or perhaps you cook on your own grill and end up eating the same old stuff week after week.
If you are bored with the typical barbecue fare why not mix things up a bit and try grilling chicken “burgers” instead. Barber Chicken Grillables to be exact.
My family has enjoyed Barber Chicken for many years now. Our favorites are the Chicken Cordon Bleu and their Chicken Kiev. Both are chicken stuffed with either ham and cheese (Cordon Bleu) or a buttery herb sauce (Kiev). Mmm! They are so good. Even the chicken stuffed with broccoli and cheese is really tasty too.
I learned recently that Barber has a special chicken that is ideal for cooking on the grill called Barber Chicken Grillables. Since we were already fans of Barber Chicken I knew we just had to try out the Chicken Grillables.
I looked everywhere in my local area and none of our grocery stores carried the Grillables, even though it says they do on the Barber website. Ugh! Sadly that doesn’t surprise me one bit. Our local grocery stores never seem to carry the “latest and greatest” products. We live in the suburbs of NYC and my family lives upstate in “cow country” (as my husband calls it) yet upstate they carry things like Barber Chicken Grillables. That is no fair!
Thankfully Barber was kind enough to send me a package of Grillables in order for me to do this review. Thank you Barber!
Barber Chicken Grillables are round chicken “patties” in a way, except they are not actual patties. It’s hard to explain. It’s like pieces and chunks of chicken arranged in a round patty like form. Make no mistake – these are NOT chicken patties! Chicken patties are usually pre-cooked breaded chicken pieces. The Grillables are not breaded and NOT pre-cooked. They are 100% raw so you need to make sure they are cooked all the way through. You CANNOT microwave the Barber Chicken Grillables. You can only barbecue them, pan fry or broil in the oven.
I was so tempted to give these a try all week long but I knew I was heading up to my Father’s house on Saturday for a barbecue so I saved them until the weekend so that I could try one on the barbecue.
My husband grilled the Barber Chicken Grillables about 7 minutes on each side, give or take.
I WISH I had my camera with me on Saturday. I meant to take it with me but I totally forgot. My husband does have a photo on his Blackberry but it’s not the greatest photo (its too grainy).
We put the Barber Grillables on a roll (not a hamburger bun, although that would work too) with some lettuce and onions (my Stepmother used fresh tomatoes too). My Father even added some mayo.
MMMMM!!!! The chicken was SO GOOD! Let me repeat, these are not chicken patties. I honesty thought when I tried it that it might taste that way but it didn’t. It tasted like actual chicken, as if someone threw a chicken breast on the grill and made it into a sandwich. It definitely tasted like “fresh” chicken compared to chicken patties which tend to taste overly processed.
What a great alternative to the regular old burger!
The Barber Chicken Grillables are lightly seasoned too. Not too much, not too little, but just right. They are also only 140 calories each and have 5 grams of total fat per serving. This is a much healthier alternative to burgers and hot dogs too.
I’d like to try them again but next time I want to use some freshly made Herman’s BBQ sauce for a BBQ Chicken Sandwich. I also think these could work with some sauce and melted cheese for a chicken parmigian sandwich too. Mmm! Yummy! You could even top off a healthy salad with one of the Barber Chicken Grillables for a quick and healthy lunch.

We ♥ the Barber Chicken Grillables. Now I just have to find a way to get my local grocery stores to carry them so that we can indulge in them more often.

My favorite summer side dish is marinated veggies and macaroni. I cook a box of macaroni, drain, add a bottle of balsamic vinegarette dressing and set it aside to cool.
While that’s cooling, I chop red onions, red peppers, yellow squash, zucchini, cukes, grape tomatoes (halved), brocoli florets, shredded carrots (change up the veggies however you want). I don’t have set amounts, the more the merrier.
I add the juice of 2 lemons (plus the zest if you want), and more balsamic vinegarette dressing (anywhere from 1/2 to a whole bottle, depending on the amount of veggies). Add a couple of containers of feta crumbles, add the whole thing to the cooled macaroni, stir and serve.
If you’ve got fresh herbs on hand (parsley, mint, thyme) you can add some but I find the dressing has enough flavor that I don’t need extra herbs.
Since there’s no mayo it can sit out and it gets better as the days go by
My favourite side dish is a cold pesto/pasta salad
Pasta (any shape you desire)
Pesto
Grape Tomatoes
Cold grilled asparagus
Toasted Pine Nuts
I’m not a great measurer so be patient with me..
Cook the pasta in salted, rolling boil water according to instructions. Put the pasta in a collander and run cold water over it, this will stop the pasta from cooking any further & will stop it from absorbing the pesto. In a large bowl/serving dish add the pasta and pesto until you have your desired moistness. Add grape tomatoes (whole or halved), broken up cold asparagus spears and toasted pine nuts.
Toss and refidgerate until cold!

My side dish would be potato salad..
That grill is so cute! I’d like a blue one of those. My favorite side dish for summer would be good old fashioned baked beans. I like this recipe on food network by Paula Deen.
