Do you have a little one heading off to Kindergarten in the fall, or perhaps first grade?
I remember when my kids were around that age. I was so excited for them. I knew that soon enough they would be starting to read and write. Both of my children knew some basic sights words such as colors, cat, dog, and easy 3-4 letter words. However I knew that once they started school they were going to be exposed to the wonderful world of reading.
By recognizing simple sight words your child can have a head start for learning to read.
Recently I was sent a couple of copies of Bob Books Sight Words to review. For some silly reason I was expecting flashcards. Instead I received rather unique looking flashcards AND mini-books that help children to recognize sight words within a story.
The mini-books are a cute idea. Each book has only a few pages (about 12 pages). Each page features a simple line drawing and a single sentence. Within the sentence are some of the sight words the book is going to help children to recognize.
For example, in the book “Plums” the sight words are “good“, “now” and “are“. One of the sentences in the books reads “The plums are hard. The plums are not good“. Do you see how the sight words are included within the sentence?
Sight words are words recognized by sight rather then sounded out, in order to achieve reading fluency. They are the most frequently used words in the English language and are often hard to read phonetically (“was”, “are”, and “out” for example).
Bob Books Sight Words feature the top Sight Words in two sets, one for Kindergarten and one for First Grade.
Bob Books Sight Words allow parents and children to read, learn and practice together in a fun and easy way.
Each package contains 10 original mini-books, 30 flashcards and a parent guide. The books are super cute and entertaining for little children with easy to understand concepts and stories.
I love the flashcards. One one side there is an image from one of the mini books with a simple sentence that features a sight word, such as “Mat and Same like to play.” Like is the sight word. On the back of the card is the word “Like” so parents can see what word their child should recognize.
Each set of books and flashcards come in nice storage boxes so that you can keep all the pieces (books, flashcards) together.

We always read to my daughter and try to get her to follow along. I also like to print sight words and have her make sentences with them.
