Yes, you read that right! You can get $25 gift certificates to area restaurants for as little as $1.00. I didn’t believe it either until I checked it out for myself.
Restaurant.com has been around for a long time. There you can buy $25 gift certificates for $10. It almost seems too good to be true. Unfortunately for me there are not any participating restaurants near where I live. I would have to drive across the river or into New Jersey to find something. That is just where I live. Your area might be different. Even though I’m in the suburbs of NYC we don’t have nearly as many restaurants and stores as they do upstate.
I recently learned that Restaurant.com now has daily deals. There you can purchase $25 gift certificates for as little as $1.00.
To see if it really worked that way I went to the Daily Deals page, www.Restaurant.com/DailyDealand chose the first restaurant I saw that is in my general area. I put a $25 gift card in my shopping cart. Then I went to my shopping cart and noticed that the charge for the $25 gift card was $10.00. I then added the Daily Deal discount code, WOW, to my shopping cart and it brought the cost down to $1.00!
I was thinking that this might be too good to be true so I went back to read the restrictions on the gift certificate and this is what it said.
Minimum purchase of $35.00. 18% Gratuity added prior to discount. Valid for Dinner, Dine in ONLY. Valid for parties of 2 or more.
OK, I can live with these terms. We usually tip 15% anyway so the 18% gratuity is not that bad, especially considering we’re saving $24.00 using the gift certificate. That is still a great savings.
A $100 gift certificate to the same restaurant costs $40 but with the Daily Deal discount it came to $4.00! That is a $96.00 savings.
It would appear that this is 100% legitimate however I caution you to read the fine print on any restaurant you are interested in purchasing a gift certificate to so that there are no surprises when you go to redeem it. For example, you can get a $25 gift certificate for Mrs. Field’s Cookies for only $10, but there is a minimum purchase of $75 before you can redeem it. I’m pretty sure I’ll never have a need to buy $75 in cookies.
