Have Restaurant Quality Meals at Home

We love to go out and eat. For my family its a treat. We rarely eat out. Eating out is very costly and it doesn’t fit in with our budget. Just last weekend we took our son out to eat at Applebees. That is where he wanted to go for his birthday meal. Not including the tip the meal came to over $70.00. All we had was four entrees, two salads and four drinks. We didn’t have appetizers or desserts. That is A LOT of money!

Even though it costs a lot its nice to indulge in meals you might not otherwise be able to make at home. Whether its time, money or cooking skills, sometimes its hard to mimic the foods that you enjoy so much at your favorite restaurant. Next to pizza, Chinese foods are our next favorite eat out/take out meal. I can cook, but I have yet to master the art of cooking gourmet Chinese meals.

I know there are plenty of frozen Chinese meals I could whip up at home. Trust me, we’ve probably tried them all. Unfortunately a lot of them fail by comparison to the real meal. Either that or they taste artificial or not too appealing. Other meals you simply cannot find on the grocery shelves.

Have you ever heard of Schwans? Schwans is a food delivery service that delivers grocery items right to your door. Schwans only delivers food items.

I must warn you, if you visit their website, www.Schwans.com, be prepared to drool!  They have everything from beef, chicken and sea food to desserts, snacks and appetizers.

Schwans carries a line of  Asian inspired meals you can make at home. The meals were created by Chef Jet Tila, an award-winning and nationally recognized chef of Asian cuisine.

My family was lucky enough to try out a few of the Chef Jet Tila meals at home, thanks to Schwans. We received Chicken Lo Mien (my favorite thing to order from Chinese take out places!), Drunken Noodles (love the name!), Thai Chicken Coconut soup and Cantonese Steamed Cod with Ginger and Soy. I would certainly not even make the attempt to try and make these at home.

The Chef Jet Tila meals were pre-packaged using fresh, frozen ingredients. All you needed to do was follow the simple instructions and within minutes you had restaurant quality meals ready to eat.

The first thing we had to try was the Chicken Lo Mien. We LOVE Chicken Lo Mien. I’m embarrassed to say that I used to make this from one of those pre-packaged meals in a can. Many of my readers might know what I’m talking about.

We put the ingredients in a pan and followed the directions. The  noodles took a lot longer to cook then the rest of the meal but it was well worth it in the end.

Mmmm!!! It tasted just as good as the kind we get from the Chinese take out across the street.

The next meal we tried was the Drunken Noodles. The name alone amused me. I have no idea why they are referred to as “drunken”. LOL!

The Drunken Noodles were as easy to prepare at the Chicken Lo Mien was. Initially I was not too keen on the noodles but after a few tries I liked them. My husband loved it from the first bite. My kids wouldn’t entertain the thought of trying it.

The meals are ideal for two people. There is not enough for a family of four in my opinon.

I was the only one who was silling to taste the Thai Chicken Cocont soup. I’m the only one in the family who likes Coconut. Sadly I was a bit disappointed in this soup. It was “OK” but I probably wouldn’t purchase it in the future. I was expecting a strong Coconut taste but the reality is that I barely tasted Coconut at all. I’m not sure what it really tasted like but it certainly was not Coconut. The soup was also very watery. Maybe the ice from being frozen added more water content to the soup. I don’t know. All I know is that it was very watery. There was also very little chicken or mushroom in the soup either. I could probably count on one hand how many pieces of BOTH chicken and mushrooms there were in the soup. I only took a few spoonfuls and tossed the rest out, sad to say. I have never had Coconut soup before so I am not sure what the “real deal” tastes like.

Lastly we tried the Cantonese Steamed Cod with Ginger and Soy. The package comes with enough to serve two people. My husband actually made a sandwich about an hour after dinner because he was still hungry. I guess it wasn’t enough for him.

Don’t get me wrong – the meal was AMAZING! I was impressed with hour fresh the Cod tasted. It was hard to believe that it was FROZEN Cod. It seemed like it was just caught and prepared right before it was placed on the plate. Kudos to Chef Jet Tila for this delicious Cod! The rice and the broccoli were good too.

The whole meal cooks in the micrwave in about 7-8 minutes depending on your microwave. We kept ours in for a minute longer then instructed.

The Cantonese Steamed Cod with Ginger and Soy even looks nice on the plate after its prepared. My apologies for not having a photo of this meal. I should have taken one!

Schwans doesn’t only sell Asian meals. They also carry other entrees like Roasted Mushroom and Parmesan Linguini with Grilled Chicken, Beef Portabella and Roasted Garlic and Chicken Flatbread Pizza.

Schwans also carries individual meats, appetizers, side dishes and so much more. You can have a weeks worth of meals delivered to your door directly from Schwans. You must check out their selection fo desserts and snacks too. OH MY! They even have smoothies.

You must try the Gourmet Twist Pretzels. They are REALLY good! They warm up in the oven or you can cook them in the microwave. We prefer the oven. We like that bit of crispiness on the outside when warmed in the oven.

The pretzels come with salt packets and cinnamon packets. My family went crazy for the cinnamon. I wish they would have included more. Thankfully the kids came up with another topping for the pretzels – NUTELLA! The only downside is that the warm pretzel melts the Nutella and it can get pretty messy (but its so worth it!). They are great without toppings too. What I like about these pretzels too is that they are not gigantic like the kind you find at ball parks or on the NYC sidewalks. They are a decent size. Not too big and not too small.

My kids are CRAZY about the Confetti ice cream! These are small, individual sized cups of Vanilla ice cream topped with rainbow colored chocolate chips. They didn’t skimp on the chips either. There are plenty of chips in the ice cream where you’ll find that there are still a few chips left, even on your last spoonful.

Ordering from Schwans might be a bit more costly then if you purchased products from the local grocery store. However you need to remember that you are paying for the convenience of having the products delivered right to your door as well as having some meals pre-made for you. If you are having an especially busy day its sure worth a little extra money for the convenience of having a fresh, delicious meal ready in minutes. Their pies, cakes and cobblers would be ideal to keep on hand for last minute holiday get together or to save yourself from having to make dessert for your next holiday meal.

Are You Looking to Earn More $$$ for the Holidays?

There is a really interesting and information article on the ABC News website that I think many of my readers would be very interested in.

If you are looking to earn some extra money for the holiday season, or if you find that you are struggling to get by week after week, you might want to check out this very interesting article by Tory Johnson, http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/JobClub/job-companies-hire-holidays/story?id=11741056.

There are many companies looking to hire for the holiday season. They are starting to hire in October. Some companies need THOUSANDS of holiday workers including…

- JCPenny 30,000

-  Toys R Us 45,000

- Macy’s 65,000

-  UPS 50,000

There are many companies who need home based workers as well. The article lists companies you should apply to.

In total this holiday season requires approximatly 500,000 – 600,000 seasonal workers

Most of these jobs pay minimum wage or maybe up to around $12/hr. Its possible to work two part time seasonal jobs if you can come up with schedules that would work.

Seasonal employment is great for homemakers who need some extra money for the holidays, teens looking for jobs they can include on a resume, unemployed people or people who are just looking to bank a few extra dollars. I’m sure many retired people might enjoy seasonal work for something to do.

Here is the video talking about all the seasonal jobs too. If you have a couple of minutes its well worth watching. Its very informative.

For more information or for other interesting news articles you can visit the ABC website at www.ABCNews.go.com.

Infiniti Pro Hair Dryer by Conair Review & Giveaway

My teen daughter is really into trying out different hair styles. Its a teen thing. Some days she uses a flat iron to straighten her hair, other days she lets it dry naturally (wavy). Once in a while she’ll even use the Infiniti You Curl to give her hair more curls and spirals. I think every day she does something different with her hair. Not me. I tend to stick to ponytails.

I don’t do much with my hair on a daily basis. If I know I’m not going out for the day I’ll let my hair dry naturally (wavy & frizzy). If I know I am going out I’ll blow dry my hair to make it smoother.

I have a hair dryer that is about as basic as they come. It has two speeds – low and high. I honestly don’t know the different. They are pretty much the same if you ask me.

Recently I was asked if I would like to try out the Infiniti Pro Hair Dryer by Conair. Since we already own the Infiniti You Curl (which my daughter loves) I  was more then happy to do the review.

The Infinit Pro Hair Dryer is just that – a hair dryer – but oh my! This literally blows the competition out of the water (no pun intended)!

The Infiniti Pro comes in a funky orange color. I actually liked this. Normally driers come in boring colors like black or off white. The orange really stands out in my basket of “hair arsenal” as my husband calls it.

One of the best features about this dryer is that is not only does it have two speeds (high and low) but it also have FOUR temperatures to choose from. You have a choice from cool, warm, hot AND you can give your hair a blast of COLD air! Unlike other dryers I have had in the past I can actually tell the difference between the temperatures.

Why would you need different temperatures you might ask? That is a good question. Personally I use the lighter (cooler) setting when I just want to get the dampness out of my hair. For example, if I let my hair dry naturally and I need to go out and its not dry enough I’ll run the dryer through my hair on the cool setting to get rid of the dampness. I also insist that my daughter uses the cool setting. I don’t want her using the hot because I don’t want her to damage her hair.

I used the warm setting to blow dry my hair like I normally would.

The hot setting is reserved for when I am styling my hair. If I really want to do up my hair then I’ll use the hot setting and one of my curling brushes. My curling brushes are metal so when they are hit with hot hair they heat up, similar to a hair curler, except the curl is larger because the brush is much bigger then the hair curler barrel. This is how I smooth out my hair and create big waves.

My most favorite feature on the Infiniti Pro Hair Dryer is the COLD setting. Yes, I said COLD! Have you ever come across a hair dryer that blows cold air? I can see myself using this in the heat of summer to cool off. Ha Ha. It really is COLD!

I use the cold setting to help set my hair. After I get my hair wrapped around my metal brush and blast it with some hot heat for a few seconds I then squeeze the trigger to put some cold air on it. The cold helps to “set” the curl. Then I wait a few seconds and gently release the brush from my hair and what I’m left with is a lovely curl/wave.

Another great feature is that you can remove the lint trap on the dryer. It is actually a safety hazard to let the link build up in the dryer. It also destroys your hair dryer. If the motor is going but it can’t get any incoming air its going to kill the motor.

In the past I have had to take a needle to scrap out the link from the trap. With the Infinit Pro the link trapper comes off so you can quickly and easily clean it off. This helps to extend the life of your dryer.

The Infiniti Pro Hair Dryer also comes with two attachments which help you to narrow down on the area you are drying which is helpful if you are styling your hair like I do.

According to the Infiniti Conair website the Infiniti Pro Hair Dryer is “…ergonomically designed for ultimate comfort. High performance for salon-quality results. A quiet, but powerful AC motor ensures fast drying time, which means less heat exposure for hair. Well-balanced and lightweight, this Infiniti Pro by Conair dryer delivers comfortably effortless styling and sensational results.”

I never thought I would get excited over a hair dryer. I don’t see this as JUST a hair dryer but more so a styling tool. Why break out a hair curler or straightner when I can do both with just the dryer and some brushes?

I love, love, love this hair dryer! I’m giving this a two thumbs up, 10+ and five gold stars.

The Infiniti Pro Hair Dryer by Conair is available on Amazon and at Target, Kohls, Kmart, Sears, Rite Aid and many other retail locations.

Nano Hex Bugs – Creepy Little Critters!

This past weekend was my son’s birthday. We took him out for the day on Saturday and had a family birthday party for him on Sunday.

Sometimes the kids get restless at Grandpa’s house. We usually have something for them to play with so that they don’t have to sit around and listen to the adult chatter away. The kids really want Grandpa to get a pool and/or trampoline. Of course that is not going to happen.

Aside from the usual outdoor stuff we keep in the trunk of my car (bat, wiffle ball, basketball, Frisbee, chalk…) I also brought up some Nano Hex bugs and play sets that were sent to me from BSB Media.

OH MY GOODESS!!! Have you seen these things? They are the creepiest little critters I have ever seen. They scurry around the floor like ROACHES! Gross!

Nano Hex bugs are about an inch in size. They are made from a hard plastic and use tiny button cell batteries (which are included). The bugs have rubber like legs/feet which help them to scurry around the floor.

Don’t believe me how creepy these things are? Check out this video.

I didn’t take any photos at the party of the children playing with the Nano Hex bugs out of respect. Not all parents are overly keen on having their child’s picture up on the Internet. I totally respect their decision.

The one in the video might need a new battery soon. It wasn’t zipping all over the kitchen like the bugs were doing at Grandpa’s house on Sunday. My kids each have two bugs and I was only able to find one of the bugs. I have no clue where the other bugs are. HOPEFULLY they didn’t fall victim to the dog or the cats!

Honestly, the ones over the weekend RACED around the floor going in all different directions. For some odd reason the one in the video is set on going around in a circle. Maybe there is a setting on the bug that I am unaware of?

The bugs come in different colors and designs. Their “backs” are a hard plastic and their legs are soft and rubber like. My son said they sort of resemble the end of a toothbrush (the part you put in your mouth). The underside contains an on/off switch and each bug comes in a long, clear plastic tube to call “home”. When they are turned on you can clearly hear them vibrating.

There are accessories you can buy with the bugs including play sets that you can either let the bugs race around on their own or they can “fight” other Nano Hex bugs. I prefer they just let them run around in the track rather then let them shoot across the floor and under foot. A couple of them almost got stepped on.

I would not recommend these for little kids. They could very easily be swallowed. I would also be careful around dogs and cats. The four legged family members found them equally as intriguing and can easily be swallowed or chew apart by a dog (a cat might be able to chew off the legs/feet).

There were kids from 10-15 years old who found them to be very entertaining. I would think these would be find for over 5+ years old up to about 12.

Nano makes other Hex bugs and critters like ladybugs, crabs and inchworms. If you are freaked out by bugs you WILL NOT like these toys! The Hex Bugs that we have truly do resemble a roach or something similar in side. When you catch one in the corner of your eye dashing across the room it really makes you think twice about what you saw. Was it the robotic bug or the real thing? Eww!

Here is another (professionally done) video. See what I mean – creepy!

The play sets were REALLY easy to set up. I was very relieved by that. Sometimes the play sets are not worth the headache trying to set them up. However the Bridge play set and the other habitat set that we received were really quick and simple to set up. In fact I think these sets are ideal for this toy because you can sort of set it up the way you see fit. A child can use his/her imagination to design the habitat the way they see fit.

The bridge set was interesting. The bugs zip around these tracks and meet up on this almost flat surface (bridge) and essentially push each other off. If they do fall off they land on a flat area beneath that essentially keeps the bugs from falling off and racing around the room. The bugs just pick themselves up and race back up the track to try all over again. I like the fact that the habitat essentially keeps the bugs confined so that they don’t go all over the place, especially when you have half a dozen kids tossing their bugs on the tracks at the same time.

The Hex Bugs are not cheap. They retail for around $12 for one little bug in a “test tube”. They are a little more expensive then a typical “stocking stuffer”. The play sets and accessories range in price from around $12 – $40. If you opt to buy the Nano Hex Bug as a gift I would recommend picking up the habitat set. Not only does it give kids something to do but it would also keep the bug contained. The bridge set is really only good if you have several bugs. One or two bugs at a time would be boring.

I can see children swapping these just like they would baseball cards or rubber bracelets. Even during the course of the day on Sunday the kids were swapping the bugs. I don’t know if it was because of the color (they had their choice) or the fact that the bugs seem to have their own personalities and some just seem to be a bit more crazier and/or faster then others.

I really wish I could figure out where the kids put their bugs. I’m a big concerned why I am only finding one.

Even thought the Nano Hex Bugs are a bit on the creepy side I can see how they would be a lot of fun for most kids. All the kids loved them at the party including my 13 year old daughter and 15 year old nephew. They appeal to both boys and girls.

For more information about the Nano Hex Bugs you can visit the official website at www.HexBug.com. While you are there check out the other varieties of critters too. There are also more videos you can check out.

Nano Hex Bugs are sold in most toy retail locations including Toys R Us and Amazon.

Win $500 Worth of Groceries & More!

This morning I had to call my son’s school to find out what happened to the $25.00 we gave him last Monday for lunch. He told us yesterday that the lunch lady said he needed more money. How could that be? It turns out he was buying lunch, a drink and a snack every day which cost $4.40. Ugh!  Its bad enough that I cringe at the stuff they feed the kids, let alone the cost.

Our school district offers our children such “healthy” (said with MUCH sarcasm) lunches such as nacho chips with an ice cream scoop of greasy ground beef and soaked in artificial cheese. Oh! Doesn’t that sound YUMMY (NO WAY!). Or another “healthy” option is 4 or 5 mozzarella sticks as the MAIN COURSE! I’m sorry but I do believe mozzarella sticks are an APPETIZER, not a main meal. Sigh…

I truly wish that our school would offer something like rice bowls. There are so many healthy and nutritious meals you can make using rice as the “base” ingredient. Rice also helps to fill you up. If the rice bowl could be made with brown rice even better.

I would LOVE it if our school could offer a bowl of rice topped with steamed veggies and grilled chicken. I realize that many kids might not be keen on that idea but you’d be surprised at just how many kids would eat it. Another suggestion would be to take a scoop of chili and put it on top of a bowl of rice. I do that at home for my family. It is not only filling but you also get the extra fiber from the beans in the chili.

Sometimes I make rice with scrambled eggs as a side dish. My family loves it! All you need to do is make scrambled eggs then drop them in the pot of boiling water, add the rice, stir it around, cover and wait for the rice to cook. Make sure to “fluff” it up with a fork after a few minutes.

Rice is so incredibly versatile. Did you know that rice costs about .10 cents per serving? Also, enriched white rice and whole grain brown rice contributes more than 15 vitamins and minerals, are low in calories, are sodium- and cholesterol-free, gluten-free and have only a trace of fat with no trans fat.

Our family eats rice at least a few times per week. Sometimes as a side dish, other times as part of the main meal. I even save a little rice to use in tomato soup. MMM!!! I love rice in tomato soup!

You can even eat rice for BREAKFAST! The USA Rice Federation website has a huge assortment of recipes featuring rice. They have a recipe for All-Star Breakfast Rice which include fresh fruits. Or you can try Confetti Eggs And Rice for breakfast.

You can view all the yummy rice recipes, including award winning recipes, on the USA Rice Federation website, http://www.USARice.com. Click on the “Consumer” tab on the top task bar to find the recipe sections. You can even sign up for a FREE e-mail newsletter to have delicious rice recipes delivered right to your e-mail inbox.

The USA Rice Federation website is a valuable resource. I learned a lot from the site including the proper way to store rice. Did you know that milled white rice can be stored indefinitely, meaning it doesn’t have an expiration date? Knowing that I think maybe some rice would be great to store (in a proper container) in an emergency kit. If you have a way of boiling water then you can make some rice.

September is National Rice Month (be you didn’t know that!). In honor of National Rice Month the USA Rice Federation is having a contest that ends on September 31, 2010.

The contest is called Bowl Us Over. Many busy parents, such as myself, can submit an original ideas for great tasting and healthy rice bowls

With this contest, USA Rice Federation is hoping to educate consumers about the versatility, great taste and health benefits of rice.

It’s simple to enter. All you need to do is submit your ideas to easily transform U.S. rice into healthy, quick and uniquely different rice bowl meals online at www.USARice.com/BowlUsOver.

First place winners will receive a prize of $500, second place is $250, third place is $150; seven runners-up will receive an Aroma Rice Cooker. I have an Aroma Rice Cooker. I it!  I especially love to make brown rice in it. It turns out perfect nearly every single time.

The Aroma Rice Cooker that you could win if you are one of the lucky 7 runner ups makes entering that much more worth while. Yeah, the cash would be great but even to win the rice cooker would be wonderful too.

The Aroma Rice Cooker allows you to make as little or as much rice as you need. Its one of those “fix it and leave it” sort of things. You don’t even have to fork fluff the rice like you do when you cook instant rice on the stove. It also comes out nice and moist. I hate it when rice is under cooked and you find crunch pieces. Blah! So far I have not experienced that with the Aroma Rice Cooker.

I honestly think that our Chinese restaurant across the street has the same cooker! The next time I stop to get my family take out I’ll have to double check.

The Aroma Rice Cooker is not just for rice. It also steams veggies. I steamed some baby red potatoes chunks in it the other day and they turned out SO GOOD!  I have also steamed baby carrots and broccoli in the Aroma Rice Cooker. I know you can make soups and chili in the rice cooker but I haven’t tried that yet. I believe you can cook meats in it as well but I have also not tried that yet. I’ve just been enjoying making white and brown rice in it as well as steaming vegetables.

My husband was like “oh no, not another appliance”. Ha! Now he requests me to make the rice in the rice cooker instead of on the stove because even he sees that the rice is just so much better in the cooker.

To learn more about Aroma Rice Cookers (they have many models) visit www.Aroma-Housewares.com

Put your “thinking caps” on and come up with some tasty and healthy ideas for rice bowls. Don’t forget to include heart healthy foods such as vegetables, tofu, beans and lean protein such as chicken and fish. Or maybe consider adding something like cilantro for a Mexican flavored rice bowl, or feta cheese, yogurt and cucumbers for a Mediterranean rice bowl. MMM!!! I’m drooling just thinking about those fantastic flavor combinations.

With the holidays fast approaching maybe you can come up with a fun rice bowl idea that utilizes left overs from Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas dinner?

Once you have come up with some tasty ideas be sure to enter at www.USARice.com/BowlUsOver.

Good luck!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Did you know that breast cancer is the second most prevalent cancer that affects 1 out of every 8 women. That is a REALL Y scary statistic. Think about yourself and 7 friends or family members. Statistically speaking one of you might develop breast cancer.

This year alone, more than 200,000 women and 1,500 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. YES! Men get breast cancer too. My grandfather had to have a mastectomy because he developed breast cancer.

Some symptoms of breast cancer include a new lump or bump that does not seem to go away, spontaneous discharge from the nipple, a change in the contours of the breast, redness or pitting of the skin.

It is vital that you get regular screenings for breast cancer before symptoms. All women should do a Breast Self-Exam on a monthly basis. If you are younger than 40 a breast exam should be part of their routine annual physical.  If you are over 40 a mammogram should be performed on a yearly basis.

From now until October 31, 2010 a friend of mine, Alicia, is donating 100% of the profits on her Breast Cancer Awareness jewelry on her site, Beaded Royalty. I had reviewed one of her BEAUTIFUL bracelets about a month ago. You can read that review here, http://www.shescribes.com/2010/08/beaded-royalty-heirloom-quality-customized-jewelry.html.

Alicia is doing this in honor of a friend of hers who is currently battling breast cancer.

Alicia’s jewelry would make an amazing gift for someone who might currently be battling breast cancer or a breast cancer survivor. You can also purchase the jewelry for yourself and wear it proudly in support of breast cancer awareness. With the holidays coming up you could get some holiday shopping done while helping raise money for breast cancer research.

For more information or to check out Beaded Royalty’s Breast Cancer Awareness jewelry please visit http://www.beadedroyalty.com/breast-cancer-jewelry.htm. There is more jewelry available other then what is featured here in this post.
