Keep Your Lips Moist & Smooth This Winter (Giveaway)

The colder air is already upon us here in NY. This morning I had to chip frost and ice off my car. I also had to wait for it to warm up before I could take my son to the school bus.  Ugh! I’m so NOT looking forward to the Winter months.

Aside from the obvious… blizzards, shoveling, driving in snow… there are more reasons not to like the Winter. For me its dry skin, most especially my hands and my lips. I don’t know why my skin is more dry then others. I am fanatical about applying lotions and creams so I cannot understand why my skin is constantly dry.

I hate it when my lips get so dry that they crack. Have you ever had a cracked lip, especially in the corners where your upper and lower lips meet? OUCH! That is NOT a good feeling. It hurts like a you-know-what!

I make sure to keep lip balm of some kind in my purse, coat pocket, in both cars, on my desk and in the bathroom just to be on the same side.

I don’t need a lip balm that tastes like a cupcake or jelly bean. I just need something that is going to keep my lips smooth and hydrated. Flavored lip balms are “OK” but I prefer something a little more.

Carmex has a lip balm that not only keeps your lips soft and hydrated but its also tinted too, like a lip gloss. I like this idea much better then flavored lip balms. I’ll leave those to my teen daughter.

The Carmex Tinted Lip Balm provides you with the same great moisturizer as other Carmex products, but with a stuble hint of color.

Currently the tinted lip balm is available in a sheer Peach and a sheer Pink. My teen daughter flipped out when she saw these and begged me to let her have one. I figured it was fine since the color is sheer.

I’m not one to wear lipstick but I do like to wear a little color from time to time. The Carmex Tinted Lip Balm is ever so subtle. Its a nice option to wear around your home or running errands rather then applying actual lipstick.

I like the way this lip balm feels on your lips. Unlike wax based lip balms which feel “goopy” on your lips, the Carmex Tinted Lip Balm glides on nice and smooth and leaves your lips feeling moist, not waxy.

The lip balm also wipes off easily. You do not need a special make up remover to take it off, unlike some lipsticks which seem impossible to remove from your lips.

The Carmex Tinted Lip Balm would make a great stocking stuffer for a teen and it great to tuck into your purse to carry with you.

For more information about the Carmex Tinted Lip Balm and other Carmex products please visit www.MyCarmex.com.

One lucky winner will win BOTH the Peach and the Pink tinted lip balms, compliments of Carmex. Thanks Carmex!

Ronald McDonald House Charities – Help Spread Some Holiday Cheer This Year (Giveaway – 10 Winners!)

‘Tis the season for holiday parties, marathon shopping sprees, homemade goodies and good cheer. Sadly, for many people the holidays are just a painful reminder of what reminder of just how precious the holidays can be with your family, especially when you have a child who is battling a serious disease.

Every year McDonald’s makes an extra effort to bring to light the important work they do for the Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC). This year they sponsored a “Give a Hand Fundraiser” which raised funds for the Ronald McDonald House. Across the country people purchased a “Hand” for a $1.00 donation. The funds raised went to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

In case you are unfamiliar with the work that the Ronald McDonald House Charities do, they help provide families of seriously ill children a place to stay so that they can be close to their child in the hospital.

Imagine if you would that you had a child that was very ill and needed to go to a hospital in another town or state for treatment. Its hard enough getting through your day to day things with a child ill in the hospital, let alone having to worry about traveling to and from the far away hospital, or worrying about a hotel room or a place to stay. That is where the Ronald McDonald House Charities come in.

Each year the Ronald McDonald House Charities provides families of sick children a place to stay for the duration of their child’s stay in the hospital. This allows parents to be close to their child and the medical staff taking care of their child.

At every House, families can enjoy:

- Home-cooked meals

- Private bedrooms

- Playrooms for children

And so much more!

The generosity of volunteers and donors make it all possible. In return, families either stay at no cost or are asked to make a donation up to $25 per day, depending on the house. The RMHC Global Policy is that families are never turned away. If it is not financially possible to pay the fee will be waived.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities can not offer such amazing support on their own. They need the help of generous people to help them to be able to provide such services for families in need.

This year as you are scouring the countryside looking for the “perfect gift” for a family member or friend please take a moment to consider those less fortunate then you. Thousands of families across the country do not care about getting brand new electronics for a great price, nor do they care about getting their hair done for a company Christmas party. All they care about it their sick child and praying for a cure.

Please consider donating to a very worthy cause. McDonald’s runs fundraisers throughout the year, most recently the Give a Hand Fundraiser that they ran earlier this month.

You can also help raise funds by committing to spending more quality time with your family. If you make a pledge on this page,  http://www.facebook.com/McDonalds?v=app_10442206389, McDonald’s will donate funds to the Ronald McDonald’s House Charities. All you need to do is leave a comment on an activity you plan to do together with your family and approximately how many minutes you think the activity would take (be realistic). I don’t see why everyone cannot participate in this great fundraising campaign. After all it benefits not only the children and families in the Ronald McDonald House Charities programs but it also helps YOU and YOUR family to have more quality time to connect with one another, especially during the holiday season. After all, isn’t spending precious time with family and friends what the holidays are all about?

You can also donate money through the many Ronald McDonald House Charities donation boxes at McDonald’s restaurants. You can also donate online at www.RMHC.org. While you are visiting the site check out this interesting article on 100 Small Gestures you can do to help out a family with a sick child (or sick family member). These are simple, easy-to-do gestures that won’t cost you much more then a few moments of your time. Some examples include:

- Offer free transportation to and from the hospital.

- If you are bringing toys, books or snacks to a child in the hospital consider bringing in a few extras for the other children who are there.

- McDonald’s or other restaurant gift cards for a family to catch a quick bite to eat.

There are so many more found on the site. You can view the complete list here, http://rmhc.org/what-we-do/ronald-mcdonald-house/stories-1/100-small-gestures.

To learn more about the Ronald McDonald House Charities please visit www.RMHC.org. There you can find out ways you can help including donations and volunteering.

Help spread some holiday cheer this year – help out a family in need.

A special “thank you” to the Ronald McDonald House Charities for all that they do throughout the year.

Duncan Hines – A “Sweet” Addition to the Holidays

I know I have mentioned it many times before on my blog that I can’t bake to save my life (ha ha). I would very much LOVE to make cakes and cookies from scratch, or close to it, but I never have any luck. I am a great cook but a horrible baker. Thankfully my husband does well in the baking department.

Whenever my family is having a get together I’m usually quick to voluteer bringing a veggie platter and dip, that way I don’t have to be embarrassed by bringing a lame boxed cake. Besides, my sister is a fantastic baker and always blows us away with her lovely creations. There is no way I can compete with that.

Now, thanks to Duncan Hines, I CAN create a dessert to share with my family that can stand up against my sister’s amazing cakes.

Ducan Hines has a line of Decadent Cake Mixes that will make it seem like you spent hours in the kitchen creating this tasty masterpiece when the reality is that its a box mix that took less then 45 from start to finish.

For Thanksgiving I made the Triple Chocolate Decadent Cake Mix. Not only does it have the cake mix but it also came with fudge sauce and chocolate chips. Its a chocolate lovers dream cake!

As an added bonus the cake doesn’t contain any trans fat or hydrogentate oils.

To make my cake even more spectacular I used one of the Ducan Hines Amazing Glazes to top off my cake.

WOW! Talk about easy. All I had to do was pop the bottle of Amazing Glaze (I used Vanilla) into the microwave for a few seconds, then drizzle it over my cake. Its totally up to you whether or not you want to just drizzle a little on or a lot. I opted for a little. The left over glaze you can store in the fridge.

Check out my cake! Doesn’t it look delish?

The cake was (it’s long gone!) SO GOOD! The triple chocolate cake was one of the best chocolate cakes I have ever had. The kids loved the chocolate chips inside. You don’t even need a glaze with this cake. Its perfect on its own.

The Amazing Glaze added an extra boost of sweetness to the cake, not to mention a cool appearance (it looks like a fancy Oreo! LOL).

Thanks to Duncan Hines and their Decadent Cake Mix and Amazing Glaze I was able to make a cake I was proud to serve to my family, and it took no time at all and with very little effort.

The Decadent Cake Mix is also available in Apple Caramel and Classic Carrot Cake. The Amazing Glazes are currently only available in Chocolate or Vanilla. I was going to try chocolate but I thought it would have been chocolate overkill with the triple chocolate cake.

Both the mixes and glazes are found in grocery stores across the country.

This holiday season why not bake a decadent cake with a perfectly sweet glaze to “wow” your holiday guests. Or consider giving a cake as a gift to a neighbor or co-worker.

A Walk in My Shoes

Family Movie Night is back this coming Friday, December 3, 2010 at 8:00 PM (EST – 7:00 CST) when A Walk in My Shoes premieres on NBC.

A Walk in My Shoesis the newest addition to the Walmart & PG family movie series. Other family movies presented by Walmart & PG include The Jensen Project and Secrets of the Mountain.

Have you ever passed judgement on someone without truly knowing much about them or their circumstances? I think all of us are guilty of that from time to time. Even the biggest hearted, most excepting person is guilty of passing judgement on someone. Many not in a harsh way, but passing judgement none the less.

My mom always taught me that it is wrong to assume anything. Just because you THINK you know what is going on doesn’t mean that you truly do unless you have “walked a mile” in another person’s “shoes”.

A Walk in My Shoes” makes viewers stop and think, “What would I learn if I stepped into someone else’s life?

Stressed-out high school teacher Trish Fahey (Nancy Travis, “Three Men and a Baby,” “Becker”) can’t understand her students’ lack of effort in the classroom and why their parents don’t seem to care. This is especially true of Justin Kremer (Cameron Deane Stewart), a popular, skateboard-loving, basketball star who is under performing in her class. Trish has him suspended from the basketball team and quickly chalks up the situation as a case of bad parenting.

This perspective dramatically changes when Trish meets Molly (Yara Martinez), a mysterious stranger intent on helping her see things differently. After a car accident, Trish wakes to find herself living the life of Cindy Kremer (Jana Lee Hamblin), the woman she has rashly judged and criticized.

Molly helps Trish discover that there is more to the story and learns a powerful lesson that affects everyone she interacts with, including her husband, daughter and the Marine next door. No one is left unchanged.

Here is the movie’s trailer.

This is the kind of movie that families can watch together. I can also lead to interesting conversations among family members, both young and old. Learning to see things from a different perspective could help kids not to pass judgement on others and to try and find out more about the situation rather then assume anything.

My family has watched the other Walmart & PG family movies and we all enjoyed them. This Friday you can be sure my whole family will be tuned in to the newest family movie.

Mark your calendars – Friday, December 3, 2010 at 8:00 PM (EST – 7:00 CST) to make sure you watch A Walk in My Shoes on NBC.

I have a special A Walk in My Shoes prize package to give to one lucky winner. The prize package includes the movie’s DVD & Soundtrack which will not be available until after the movie airs.

To enter please comment on whose “shoes” would you like to “take a walk in” for a day? Is there someone whose life you truly admire that you would love to spend the day as that person? Comment and let me know.

Boy Scouts Trails End Popcorn (Giveaway)

Those of you who are close to my age (40′ish) might remember the series that came on Sunday nights called Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom? If not, but you have seen shows like “Life”, you might be familiar with scenes of ravenous hyenas engulfing its meal and picking apart every last morsel until there is nothing left but some fur and bones? Vultures do the same thing. This is the scene that I imagine in my mind when I make Trails End popcorn for my family. They devour the bowl of popcorn like a flock of ravenous vultures or starved hyenas.

My whole family loves popcorn. Its the perfect snack. Its low in fat and calories (depending on what kind you buy), its filling and satisfying. Not to mention it tastes great too. Even our dog loves popcorn.

Popcorn is also a very versatile snack. You can top it with butter, cheese, caramel, ranch dressing and a variety of other toppings. Or you can enjoy it plain. I give my children popcorn as a snack with their school lunches. Its a very hearty snack that doesn’t get easily crunched in the lunch box.

I know that local Girl Scouts sell cookies. Sadly there are no Girl Scouts in our family, nor do we know of any Girl Scouts so we have been missing out on our Thin Mint cookies for ages. We don’t have any Boy Scouts in the family either. I was unaware that the Boy Scouts sell popcorn to help raise funds for their troops. Best of all 70% of the sales from the popcorn goes towards local Boy Scout troops.

The Boy Scouts sell a brand of popcorn called Trails End. I have never heard of it until now.

The Trails End popcorn is made with Canola Oil which is supposedly better for you then other types of oils. Canola Oil has the lowest saturated fats compared to other oils like Sunflower, Corn, Peanut and Coconut oils.

Did you know that 93% of Canola Oil is composed of beneficial polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats that supply Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 fats? The Omegas are very important and are a vital nutrient. Canola Oil can also help lower bad LDL levels which can ultimately help prevent coronary disease and heart attacks. I’m NOT saying if you eat food made with Canola Oil will prevent heart attacks. What I mean is that its a HEALTHIER option compared to the other oils.

Canola Oil is also sourced from North America and does not contribute to deforestation. Trails End and the Boy Scouts also strive to protect our environment by using as little packaging materials as possible.

So you now know that the Trails End popcorn the Boys Scouts sell is a better for you option, but how does it taste compared to other popcorn more readily available at your local grocery store? Think back to the first paragraph of this post. That should give you some idea.

The first time I made the popcorn I made it for me and my husband to share. My kids had already had their snack. Our daughter came out of her room asking why it smells like a movie theater in our home. I told her it had to be the popcorn. My husband agreed with her. The popcorn scent filled our home and it did indeed smell just like a movie theater.

I have never known my husband to really comment on popcorn before. I know he is grossed out by chocolate covered popcorn. He tried it once and was totally grossed out by it. Aside form that whenever I make popcorn, no matter what brand, he doesn’t really comment on it. My husband let it be known that he LOVED the Trails End popcorn.

Even though both kids had already had their snacks we let them try the Trails End popcorn too and they could not get enough of it. Every night after that they asked to make the popcorn for their snack and requested that I give them the popcorn with their school lunches.

The Trails End buttered popcorn tastes just like FRESH movie theater popcorn but without the ooey gooey globs of butter that you find on theater popcorn. Its also the perfect balance of butter and salt.

One thing that really stands out to me with the Trails End popcorn is that it tastes fresh. Unlike other microwave popcorn which sometimes taste stale when you pop them, this popcorn tastes really fresh.

You don’t need to have a Boy Scout in your neighborhood to enjoy the great taste of Trails End popcorn. You can purchase it online and upon check out you can list your zip code and a percentage of the sale will go towards a troop in your local area.

The Boys Scouts as you know is a wonderful organization that helps young boys learn responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs. Its also a great way to make life long friends.

To learn more about the Boy Scouts please visit www.Scouting.org.

For more information about Trails Ends products please visit www.TrailsEnd.com. Trails End also has a special military donation program. For either $30 or $50 you can purchase popcorn and other products which will be shipped to service men and women to enjoy and either $21 or $35 will go back to your local Boy Scouts (depending on the amount of the donation purchase).

I think purchasing the special military donation package would make a great holiday gift for both service men and women and for the Boy Scouts. For $30 or $50 many people would benefit from it.

I am able to giveaway four boxes of Trails End popcorn (one box per winner – four winners in total). Each box contains 18 individually packaged microwave popcorn packets.

To enter please visit the Trails End website, www.TrailsEnd.com and look at the other products available. Then come back here and comment on another product that looks good to you.

For extra entries you can do any or all of the following. Please be sure to leave a separate comment for each that you have done. Extra entries are optional.

Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend ($250 Giveaway!)

I love to drive my hubby crazy when we go to the mall and pass by jewelry stores. It makes him nervous when I start checking out the jewelry in the display cases. I can’t help it. I’m a lady and ladies appreciate “shiny, sparkly” things. Its hard not to want to stop when you pass by a jewelry store with all the glitz and sparkle calling your name.

Helzberg Diamonds offers a lot of gorgeous pieces of jewelry that is sure to make any lady melt. Best of all the prices are actually really reasonable. I have prices certain pieces at the jewelry stores at the mall and I find that Helzberg Diamons actually have some really good prices on similar pieces.

I know that many people are interested in the engagement ring that Prince William gave to his fiancee Kate Middleton, the one that belonged to his mother Princess Diana. Helzberg Diamonds actually has a similar ring. Its a bit too pricey for a “just because” or holiday gift, however as far as engagement rings go the ring at Helzberg Diamonds is a decent price and under $3,000 for the gold and just over $1,200 for the 14K white gold.

They even offer a matching pendant and earrings too.

I always wanted an anniversary band, most especially for our 10th wedding anniversary. We just celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary so needless to say I’m not getting an anniversary band any time soon. Sigh…

Helzberg Diamonds carries both designs that I hope I’ll get some day (either design).

The yellow gold band is reasonably priced, meaning its possible that some day my husband could buy that one for. The other one is a bit more pricey but it’s so lovely to look at.

I know I have plenty of men who read my blog. If you are looking for a perfect gift to give the love of your life you might want to check out the “I am Loved” collection. The I am Loved collection features affordable pieces which would be ideal for a holiday gift. Take for example the diamond snowflake pendant that comes in a beautiful display box and surrounded by yummy Godiva chocolates.

This set is only $149.99. It’s already presented so nicely that you wouldn’t even need to gift wrap it.

The I Am Loved collection features rings, bracelets and necklaces. Their designs are not only great to give to someone special to show them how much you love them but they also make a great gift for your Mom. A few of the designs are ideal for a Mother or a Mom-to-Be.

The above ring is $119.99 and the necklace is $99.99.

Helzberg Diamonds even has an I am Loved campaign going on. To learn more about the campaign please visit www.IamLoved.com. There you will find stories, Facebook posts, tweets and YouTube videos where people share with the world just how they know they are loved. Its a wonderful site and I think its great to express how loved you feel. I know by reading a lot of the posts that it gave me the “warm fuzzies”.

To encourage you and others to share how they feel loved, Helzberg Diamonds is going to be giving away a FREE Flip Video Camera with every purchase over $499.00 on Cyber Monday (November 29, 2010). Along with the purchase there will be a card included that asks the recipient of the gift to use the Flip Camera to take a video explaining how they feel loved and uploading it to the I am Loved website. What a wonderful idea!

You can even see some really sweet pictures featuring the I am Loved theme on the Helzberg Diamonds Facebook page, www.Facebook.com/HelzbergDiamonds.

Whether you are looking for a special gift for your Mom, an engagement for your beloved (you should check out their wedding and engagement sets!) or even a something special for yourself, Helzberg Diamonds has something for everyone. Prices range from around $15 upwards to a few thousand dollars which means there is something to suit every budget.

Helzberg Diamonds has been in business since 1915 which means that they sell only the best quality jewelry around. They have a great reputation and many loyal customers.

To learn more about Helzberg Diamonds please visit www.HelzbergDiamonds.com.

Helzberg Diamonds would like to make a lucky She Scribes reader’s holiday a bit more sparkly and merry but offering a gorgeous diamond pendant valued at $250.00 (technically $249.99 – I rounded up).

This special 14K white gold necklace features a 1/10th round diamond solitaire and is part of the Sirena Collection. It’s lovely! Its very dainty and delicate and looks fantastic with a “V” cut neckline. This necklace goes great with a pair of comfy jeans and a tee shirt or dressed up in your fanciest attire. It provides just enough “sparkle” to catch people’s attention without being too bold or over powering.

I have this necklace and I wear it out to run errands. Its a great “casual” piece but it will also add just the right amount of glitz and glamour when you are dressed up too. This is perfect for the “Little Black Dress” too!

Thank you Helzberg Diamonds!
