Have a “Delicioso Night In” with Family and Friends

If there is one thing I truly enjoy doing with family and friends is entertaining. I LOVE coming up with a special menu, decorating, and picking out songs for a play list. Sadly we only tend to get together for holidays or birthdays. I really need to find other reasons why we should all get together. I LOVE hanging out with everyone. It’s fun to laugh and chat into the wee hours of the morning.

Have you seen the commercials for Kahlua where the lady talks about how Spanish words make things sounds really interesting and intriguing? It’s true! Hearing the Spanish version of common words do make them sound so much better.

I also find Kahlua “delicioso” too. I enjoy a hit of Kahlua in a hot cup of coffee from time to time when I’m hanging out with friends. If you have never tried Kahlua before it’s a spirit made from Arabica coffee beans and the world’s finest sugar cane. You can enjoy it on ice or mixed in with other ingredients.

Celebrity Chef and TV Personality, Aarón Sánchez agrees, and has some easy tips to create your own “Delicioso Night In” that you can enjoy with your family and friends.

Kahlúa and Aarón were motivated to start “Delicioso Night In” after a survey we conducted which found that 76% of Americans say a home is a better place for great conversation over spots like restaurants or lounges.  As a result, “Delicioso Night In,” is motivating Americans to spend one night per month reconnecting at home with friends, colleagues, significant others and other couples over delicious conversation.

There is also a special sweepstakes going on where you can win the ultimate Delicioso Night In prepared by Chef Aarón in New York City. After flying to New York for this special evening, one lucky winner and three other people of his/her choosing will then be whisked away to Veracruz, Mexico, the home of Kahlúa.

You can join the movement and enter to win on Facebook the Kahlua Facebook page, www.Facebook.com/Kahlua.

Here are some fun tips from Aarón Sánchez to help you create your own Delicioso Night In.

The Nose Knows- Let robust spices (think cloves, canela – the real cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper) help set the mood with the help of a standard frying pan.  Toast the spices just to their smoking point, and the room will fill with an inviting–and delicious–bouquet.

- Team Chef – Collaborate on a menu and invite your guest(s) to help you bring the menu to life. Start the party early and enjoy some cocktails as you cook.

- Pairing is Caring – When prepping for a perfect evening, pairings are a fun way to turn any meal into a special occasion and spice up the fun. Plan three courses and pair each one with a small cocktail. Use one base spirit in three different ways.

- Oscar Night – Inject some movie magic into your Oscar party potluck meal through movie pairings.  A week before the big night, randomly assign a nominated film to each guest, and ask them to bring dishes inspired by the films.  Be sure to keep tabs on their choices to avoid repeats.  During the potluck, bring some added spirit to the awards ceremony in the form of a Danzón, a type of dance enjoyed in the main squares of Mexico where men dress up in white and dance in a respectful courtship of women.  Pair the Danzón with the spirit of Kahlúa in the form of cocktails and you’ll be sure to spark plenty of conversation and laughs.

Valentine’s Day – Done with the uninspired pre-fix menus, overcrowded dining rooms, deflated expectations on Valentine’s Day?  Create an intimate evening for you and your loved one(s) by playing the role of a sensory chef.  Whether celebrating with your sweetie or with your group of most beloved friends, supplement your meal with creative touches like homemade chocolate truffles served on glass platters with photos of you and yours underneath.  Pair the truffles with a glass of Kahlúa on the rocks and a squeeze of lime as an evening starter.  Take the senses even further by lighting some candles with the warm scent of vanilla, an ingredient important to Mexico and to the spirit of Kahlúa.

Cinco de Mayo – Celebrating such a festive and fun holiday, there should be no need for stress!  Take the pressure off yourself and keep it simple by laying out a well-stocked “build your own” taco station.  On the subject of the tacos: elevate your classic guacamole with pomegranate and jicama, which will taste fantastic, and feature the colors of the Mexican flag!  Further spark conversation by serving your guests drinks that really speak to Mexican heritage. Using Kahlúa as a base in cocktails is a terrific way to bring the spirit of Veracruz to the 5th of May.

These are  just a few fun ideas from celebrity chef Aarón Sánchez. You can find more ideas and recipes on the Kahlua website, www.Kahlua.com. I found easy recipes for Kahlua and Ginger Ale and Kahlua and Coke which are actually pretty good. I wouldn’t think to pair Kahlua with soda but it works well. They even have a recipe that calls for Kahlua, espresso and vodka. That would be a bit too strong for my tastes since I’m not much of a drinker. I am a “social drinker” and I only really drink occasionally when I’m hanging out socially with family and friends.

I even found a recipe for Kahlua Tiramisu Cake on this site, http://rockrecipes.blogspot.com/2010/05/chocolate-kahlua-tiramisu-cake.html. Yummy!

If you do a Google search you can find other recipes for Kahlua too.

To learn more about Kahlua, recipes and other “delicioso” ideas visit www.Kahlua.comor their Facebook page.

ALWAYS REMEMBER – DRINK RESPONSIBLY and DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!

Did You Gnome…

With the release of Gnomeo and Juliet (February 11, 2011) I thought it would be fun to share some interesting trivia about garden gnomes.

- Some believe that the garden gnome is a descendant of the Greco-Roman fertility god Priapus, whose statue was often found in ancient gardens.

- Garden gnomes, which were known as gartenzwerg—or garden dwarfs, date back to 19th century Germany (though the Czech town of Usti nad Labem and present-day Drawno, Poland, were also key players in the terracotta industry at the time).

- Philipp Griebel and August Heissner are credited with manufacturing the first garden gnomes, which ultimately spread throughout France and England.

- Garden gnomes have long been considered good luck and were adopted by farmers to watch over animals, crops and gardens.  According to folklore, the gnomes awaken at night to tend to their chores with a magic touch.

- Garden gnomes made their way into the U.K. in 1847 thanks to Sir Charles Isham, whose trip to Germany netted 21 terracotta figures for his gardens in his Lamport Hall home in Northamptonshire. Just one has survived: Lampy is on display at Lamport Hall and is reportedly insured for a million pounds.

- Not everyone appreciates the garden gnome, who was banned from the U.K.’s prestigious Chelsea Flower Show (some feel the gnome detracts from serious garden design) until May 2010.

- Garden gnomes are also the subject of gnome-napping pranks.  The practice, called gnoming, often involves capturing gnomes in an effort to return them to the wild.

- There are official organizations involved in gnoming, including the Garden Gnome Liberation Front, which has a presence in both France and Italy.  The Italian organization MALAG (Movimento Autonomo per la Liberazione delle Anime da Giardino) claims to be establishing a European Gnome Sanctuary in Barga, Italy.

- Ann Atkin founded the Gnome Reserve & Wild Flower Garden in Devon, England, in 1978. Visitors receive a gnome hat upon arrival.

- In 2008, a 53-year-old French man in was arrested for allegedly stealing garden gnomes—more than 170.

- After Walt Disney’s first full-length animated feature “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937, many mass-produced garden gnomes reflected the plumper, happier features Disney artisans gave to six of the seven dwarfs (Grumpy was just Grumpy).

-  The garden gnome’s popularity has surged in recent years thanks to the Travelocity Roaming Gnome. Also the games Sim City 4 and Half-Life 2: Episode Two feature garden creatures.

- The Garden Gnome Theme Park in Trusetal, Germany, features more than 2,000 garden gnomes and is visited by more than 100,000 people annually.

I have a strong feeling that with the release of Gnomeo and Juliet there will be another surge in garden gnome sales. Personally I think garden gnomes are rather creepy looking or not very cute. I hope Disney/Touchstone creates garden gnomes based upon the movie characters because they are adorable. Even though I don’t have a garden I would pick up a few of the little guys just because they make me smile.

Lifetime’s One Born Every Minute and Designer Diaper Bag Giveaway! (Over $225+ value)

If you are a parent, most especially a mom, I’m sure you remember the time leading up to the birth of your child. Sometimes labor and delivery go “picture perfect” and totally by the book. Other times labor and delivery can be very chaotic, humorous and sadly, even tragic.

When I was pregnant with my daughter she was a day late. The doctor feared she would be over 10 pounds so they induced labor. Being a first time Mom I didn’t know I could have something for the pain so I lied there in total agony for about 8 hours before I finally had the nerve to ask if I could have something for the pain. The nurses laughed at me, telling me I could have had something from the start. For the record my daughter was 8 pounds, 3 ounces. Not ten! LOL!

The birth of our son was not so easy. At one of my check ups the doctor was concerned our son would be still born and made me rush over to the hospital right away. The hospital I was at only had a skeleton crew working the weekend so I had to be rushed across the river to a regional hospital.

Once things had settled down the hospital staff told my husband to go home and get some rest. They told him that I was most likely going to spend the remainder of my pregnancy in the hospital. At that time I had about two months left until I was due.

No sooner did my husband get home (about an hour from the hospital) he was called and told to rush back (keep in mind he had no sleep). Our son’s heart rate was dropping and they had to do an emergency C-section. They held off until he arrived back at the hospital. Our son was delivered 9 weeks premature. He was so tiny. He didn’t even sound like a baby when he cried. He sounded like a small kitten meowing. His cry was just a squeaky little sound.

Thankfully our son was OK. He did spend 33 days in the hospital and has had some quirky issues. But he’s fine.

As a result of my pregnancy with my son I am now considered “high risk” and if I was to become pregnant again I would most likely end up on bed rest or spend a good portion of my pregnancy in the hospital.

No two pregnancies are alike. So imagine what it must be like to work in the maternity ward at a hospital?

Lifetime television has a new series which airs on February 1, 2011 at 10:oo PM ET/PT called One Born Every Minute. The series takes an in-depth look at life inside the maternity ward. The series is filled at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Forty cameras roll 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to capture all the drama that unfolds in the maternity ward.  From the delivery room, to the operating room, to the front desk, to the nurses’ station, all the drama, humor and overwhelming emotion of childbirth is captured as new lives enter our world.

The show certainly sounds interesting. I’m sure it will bring back a lot of memories for those who have already experienced childbirth, or captivate those who have not yet had the opportunity to witness childbirth.

To learn more about the series, One Born Every Minute,  you can visit the official web page at http://www.mylifetime.com/shows/one-born-every-minute. National Oatmeal Month Giveaway (10 Winners!)

Did you know that January was National Oatmeal Month? I didn’t find that out until the other day. I get such a kick out of these special months and days. There is a month or day for just about anything you can think of. I think I’m going to start my own day, “National Hug a Blogger Day”. LOL!

Yes, it’s true. This is National Oatmeal Month. I think that is pretty cool because oatmeal is a staple in my home. My entire family eats oatmeal for breakfast, and sometimes for snack, at least a couple of times a week. I enjoy it as a snack too. Sometimes if I have the munchies at night I’ll whip up a bowl or oatmeal or late in the afternoon when I am feeling sluggish and need a little pick-me-up I’m indulge in some oatmeal too. Not only is it filling but it also helps to curb any sweet cravings I might have.

Oatmeal is actually good for you. It contains complex carbohydrates and water soluble fiber which encourages slow digestion which means it keeps you feeling full and satisfied a lot longer then other foods. Because of this oatmeal can also aid in stabilizing blood-glucose levels. The FDA has also said that food containing a lot of oat bran or rolled oats (such as oatmeal) may reduce the risk of heart disease if paired with a low fat diet.

You really have to take a look at the nutrition labels to make sure the oatmeal you are eating is good for you. Just because it’s oatmeal doesn’t mean its good for you. Some oatmeal I have seen on the market seem to be made up of everything but the good stuff (oats brand, rolled oats…), most especially ones marketed towards children.

One brand that I especially like is Better Oats. Better Oats is made with 100%whole grains and real fruit pieces. It also comes in flavors my family loves including chocolate (the kids like this warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top for dessert), apples and cinnamon (my favorite), cinnamon roll, strawberries and cream, raisins and spice (another favorite of mine) and maple cream, to name a few.

A really nifty thing about Better Oats is their unique measuring “cup”. Rather then dig through your cabinets for a measuring cup you can measure water for your Better Oats oatmeal using their specially made packaging. Once you tear open the envelope and pour the oats in the bowl you can reuse the package to measure out the water. That means less mess and one less thing you need to wash too.

The Better Oats boxes are tall and slim so they take up very little space in your cabinet too.

Better Oats are found in many retail locations across the country including Wegmans, Kroger, Harris Teeter, Shop Rite, Ralphs, Vons and many other stores. There is a store locator on the Better Oats website too.

To learn more about Better Oats or to find a retail location near you please visit www.BetterOats.com.

In honor of National Oatmeal Month, Better Oats would love to award 10 lucky readers with a case of Better Oats oatmeal. That is enough oatmeal for you to have a bowl each day for a whole month! Thanks Better Oats!

To enter please visit the Better Oats website, www.BetterOats.com, and check out the different available oatmeal under the “Our Products” section. Then come back here and comment on which Better Oats looks really good to you.

For extra entries you can do any or all of the following. Please be sure to leave a separate comment for each that you have done. Extra entries are optional.

Gnomeo and Juliet Prize Package Giveaway (Two Winners)

Most of my readers already know that I was blessed with the opportunity to enjoy an advanced screening of the new Touchstone film Gnomeo and Juliet. This twist on the Shakespeare classic tale of star-crossed lovers features the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Ozzy Osbourne, Michael Cain, Maggie Smith and many more talented individuals.

I haven’t posted my review of the movie as of yet. I will do so the week the movie opens (February 11, 2011). In the mean time you are welcome to read all my posts about the red carpet event, after party, the Q & A session with the film’s director, Kelly Asbury and other related posts. Just click on the word “Disney” in the tag cloud found on the lower left side bar. Also please keep a look out for posts pertaining to the Q & A with Elton John, Emily Blunt and James McAvoy. I should have those up in the next couple of days.

There is already a lot of postivie “buzz” about this movie. I won’t be surprised one bit if this is a massive hit. Even the soundtrack is awesome. It features music by Elton John, Lady Ga Ga, Nelly Furtado and scores by James Newton Howard and Chris Bacon.

To help get YOU excited about the movie I have a fun prize pack that I can give away to two winners. Each prize pack consists of a YOUTH size t-shirt (sizes S, M, L, XL), a cute knit beanie hat (one size fits all) and a handy gnome hat shaped mini-notebook (red on one side, blue on the other).

Each of the two winners will received ONE shirt, ONE hat and ONE notebook (not two of each).

To enter please leave me a comment using your best “gnome’ism”. I have been going back and forth with the film’s director, Kelly Asubury, on Twitter. He loves to use what I refer to as “gnome’isms”. For example he was joking about the title of possible gnome related books like “Gnome Sweet Gnome“, “Whats in a Gnome?” and “Gnome with the Wind“. He also refers to people as his “Gnomies” (instead of homies) and Mommy Bloggers are referred to as Gnomie Bloggers.

Put on your thinking cap and leave a comment with your best “gnome’ism”. Let’s see how creative you can get.

2011 Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Touchstone and DreamWorks Pictures – Something for Everyone!

There is a lot of buzz this time of year due to the popularity of awards shows like the SAG Awards, Grammy Awards and of course the ultimate, the Oscars. This is the time when we look back on the movies of 2010 and decide which ones were our favorites and which ones were total bombs. It is also a great time to look forward to 2011 movie releases with anticipation.

Walt Disney Studios and DreamWorks Pictures have several films slated for 2011 which I believe will offer something for everyone, both young and old.

During my trip to Hollywood this past weekend I had the opportunity to view some trailers and clips from some of the upcoming movies. Personally I am very excited and there are several movies I cannot wait to see on the big screen.

The first movie to be released will be Gnomeo and Juliet. I have seen the movie but I need to hold my review until the week the movie opens. Gnomeo and Juliet comes to theaters on February 11, 2011. More information and the movie’s trailer can be found at www.GnomeoandJuliet.com. Gnomeo and Juliet is in 3-D.

The next film in the Disney/Dreamworks line up follows quickly behind Gnomeo and Juliet. The action packed film, I Am Number Four will be in theaters on February 18, 2011.  You can see the movie’s trailer at www.FindNumberFour.com. There you can learn more about the movie, cast and videos. I will be posting my review shortly before the movie opens.

You might have already seen the trailer for the movie Mars Needs Moms. I saw it one of the last times I was in the theater. I also was privileged to see this film while I was touring the Walt Disney Studios. It’s set to release on March 11, 2011. Once again I will share my review a few days before the movie’s release date. The film’s trailer can be viewed at http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/marsneedsmoms. In the near future the site will contain games and downloads. Mars Needs Moms is also done in 3-D.

For the past few years DisneyNaturehas released films that not only showcase the beautiful creatures that share our great big Earth but also contributes money to charities that help our environment. During the first week of a movie’s released DisneyNature will donate $1.00 for every ticket sold.

In the past DisneyNature has brought us Earth and Oceans. If you haven’t seen them yet I highly recommend that you do. I have seen Earth and each time I see it the movie takes my breath away. I haven’t seen Oceansyet but I hope to pick up the Blu-ray/DVD combo some day.

Earth Day 2011 (April 22, 2011) DisneyNature brings the African Cats to the big screen. Oh my goodness! This movie is beautiful! I have only seen a trailer for it but I am already super excited to see it on the big screen. The film footage is stunning.

With each ticket purchased during opening week DisneyNature will donate $1.00 to an organization which helps to protect the wild cats in Africa.

More information about African Cats can be found on this web page, http://disney.go.com/disneynature/africancats.

On April 29, 2011 the movie Promwill be released. I have a feeling this is going to be a huge hit, especially with ‘tweens and teens. I cannot get into too many details but let’s just say it’s very reminiscent of John Hughes films (Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles…). My 13 year old daughter saw the trailer at http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/prom/index.html#trailer, and is going nuts! She CANNOT wait to see it. She must have seen the trailer about a dozen times already.

Many people are going to be super excited about the fourth installment to the very popular series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It’s release date is slated for May 20, 2011, just in time for my birthday! Captain Jack Sparrow – need I say more? LOL! I Captain Jack! This is another 3-D film. I have never seen a live action film in 3-D before so that only adds to my excitement for the movie’s release. You can see the movie’s trailer on the Disney website, http://disney.go.com/pirates/index-on-stranger-tides.html.

My nephew is going to be super excited about what is coming on June 24, 2011Cars 2! This sequel to the smash hit movie Carsis also done in 3-D. Many of the same lovable characters are found in the new movie. The web page on the Disney site is already set up with games, the movie’s trailer, downloads and more. I love the Create-a-Car game. My son gets a kick out of it too. Cars 2 is zooming into theaters just as kids are getting out for summer vacation.

July 15, 2011 is already marked on my calendar. That is the release date of the new Winnie the Poohmovie. I saw a couple of clips from the movie and all I can say is that it left me wanting to see more. I am so excited about this movie. I cannot wait! You can follow updates on the film on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/WinniethePooh. The web page is http://www.disney.go.com/pooh. Check out the trailer. Its SO CUTE! I Winnie the Pooh and all his friends in the 100 Acre Woods. I even have a tattoo that pays homage to the characters.

Other movies slated for a 2011 release include The Helpwhich is based upon the best selling book by the same name, written by Kathryn Stockett. Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard (Ron Howard’s daughter), Sissy Spacek and Cicely Tyson star in the movie. I’m currently reading the book. The book is pretty good. I’m looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. The Help will be released on August 12, 2011.

November 23, 2011 brings to theaters something I have a strong feeling is going to be a massive hit – a new Muppets movie! All of the beloved characters from Jim Hanson and Frank Oz are back and better then ever. I am so excited to see what celebrities make cameos in this movie. I bet actors and actresses are banging down the doors to be a part of this new movie. ♫ It’s time to play the music, It’s time to light the lights. It’s time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show tonight… ♫

Another movie coming out this year is called War Horse. It’s set to be released on December 28, 2011. Currently I don’ t have any information to share with you about the movie but I am sure in the next few months I will. A remake of the 80′s classic movie, Fright Night, is also scheduled to be released later on this year. Colin Farell will be playing the part of the tall, dark and handsome vampire neighbor.

Real Steal is also another movie that will be released later on this year.

As more information about these movies is released I’ll be sure to share it with you. If I am lucky to see the movies I’ll post my reviews the week of the movie’s release date.
