Bambi – Diamond Edition

I have always had a fondness for Disney films. I always have and I always will.

When I watch older Disney films I am immediately taken back to my childhood. I can recall the first time I saw the film. Many Disney films I saw for the first time at a local movie theater that used to play a different Disney film each week for the entire summer. My mom used to take me every week to see the movies. It became a tradition. My mom and I did that for several years until sadly, the movie theater shut down.

Over the years I have tried to add every Disney film I possibly can to our home movie collection. Currently we have A LOT of movies on VHS tapes. We don’t even own a VCR anymore. Sigh…

Its taking a long time but slowly we’re building up our Disney DVD and Blu-ray collection.

The newest addition to our collection is Bambi – the Diamond Edition which will be availableon Blu-ray and DVD where ever movies are sold on March 1, 2011.

I didn’t realize it until I was watching the movie with my family that my children have never seen the movie before. We do have the VHS tape, but some how the movie was overlooked and they never saw it. When we watched Bambi on Blu-ray the other night it was the first time they saw it.

My son made a comment about how there are hardly any words in the movie. I never really gave it much thought until he pointed that out. Bambi has a lot of instrumental music. There is dialogue but not as much as other films.

I find it hard to believe that anyone has not seen Bambi, but just in case you haven’t here is a synopsis of the film.

Bambi is the story of a young deer, name Bambi (of course). He is the son of the Prince of the Forest, making Bambi a Prince himself.

All of the forst creatures were very excited about Bambi’s birth. Most especially a curious little rabbit name Thumper.

Thumper and Bambi quickly become friends. They love to play together and enjoy the forest. One of the best scenes in the movie is when Bambi experiences snow for the first time and Thumper tries to teach him how to ice skate on the pond.

One day Bambi’s mom introduces him to the meadow. The meadow is a wonderful place to be but it’s also a very dangerous place. Men come to the meadow and when they do they cause a lot of death and destruction. Sadly Bambi’s mother is killed by a man as she tried to save Bambi’s life.

After Bambi’s mother is killed Bambi goes off into the forest with his father, the Prince of the Forest. Bambi doesn’t return to the thicket where he lived with his mom and where his friends live until he is older. Upon his return he meets up with his old friends like Thumper and Flower the skunk. He also reunites with his friend Faline, a female deer he met as a child. Faline and Bambi soon fall in love with one another.

Just when things seem to be going great for Bambi a tragic event happens causing mass destruction to the forest.

I won’t go into more detail because I’d like for you to see the movie if you haven’t already. All I can say is that the “tragic event” actually scared me when I was a young girl. I remember closing my eyes when I saw that part of the movie for the first time. It was pretty scary. Especially for a cartoon.

Over all Bambi is a sweet movie about the wonderful creatures the live in the forest. Most of the movie features only music and no dialogue. One of the most classic parts in the movie is when the song April Showers is played.

Bambi – The Diamond Edition features a DVD and Blu-ray combo pack. As with any Blu-ray you know there will be a lot of bonus features.

One of the bonus features found on the Blu-ray disc is the interactive gallery. My daughter especially liked this feature. It shows how a lot of the characters were drawn out in the original storyboard. My daughter used the images to try and draw her own characters. They turned out pretty good if you ask me. They didn’t look identical to the characters but she was able to learn how to draw a deer and a cute rabbit.

There is a game on the Blu-ray disc called Disney Big Book of Knowledge Game. It’s a really cute game but certainly geared towards younger children. The Book of Knowledge teaches people about the creatures of the forest, then asks  you to play some games to earn stickers for your virtual sticker book. The games were really easy and geared more towards very young children. Although I have to admit that I had a hard time with the snowflake catching game. I don’t think my hands are quick enough. Ha Ha.

Also included as part of the bonus features are two deleted scenes and a deleted song.

There was a part of the film that never made it into the final version about two leaves who try desperately to hold on to their tree and not get blown away by the Autumn winds. I actually found that to be really sad. I’m glad it never made it into the movie. The movie is sad enough without adding to it (referring to Bambi’s mother getting killed by the hunters).

I found the bonus feature about the story board meetings to be interesting too. I am intrigued by how people can brain storm to create the perfect film.

Bambi is available where ever movies are sold on March 1, 2011.

WARNING: Sleep Overs May Cause a Break Outs and Tummy Aches

My teen daughter went on a sleep over last night with two of her friends. Well, one girl was her best friend, then she wasn’t, then she was, then she wasn’t… you get the idea. Teen girls are so fickle sometimes.

My daughter’s friend asked if she could bring over a movie, knowing that we have a nice assortment. My daughter picked out When in Rome, The Exorcist and Social Network. Seriously? They are 13 year olds. I nixed Social Network immediately. It wasn’t so much that it was bad, per say. I just think it wasn’t really a sleep over movie for 13 year old girls.

I immediately swapped The Exorcist with the original Poltergeist as well as Creepshow. The Exorcist is too scary and there are some pretty foul parts in that movie. I could picture the girl’s parents walking by the room hearing Linda Blair spitting out several very choice words. That would make an interesting phone call for sure. I didn’t need the parents calling me up and going off on me.

The girls ended up watching When in Rome which is an innocent Rom-Com (romantic comedy). As per my daughter the other girls feel asleep almost instantly. Humm… makes me wonder what they thought of the movie.

My daughter could not sleep. She kept texting me complaining that she wasn’t tired, she had a tummy ache and she just couldn’t sleep. Her last text came to me around 2:54 AM. I texted her back telling her to close her eyes and think of something nice like where she wanted to go on vacation. I didn’t hear back from her after that.

At 5:45 AM my daughter texts my husband to say she’s hungry and could he bring her a granola bar when we came to pick her up. Really? She had to text him that at 5:45 AM? Sigh…

We had a lot of things to do today and our daughter was dragging because she was so tired. She also kept complaining of a stomach ache. I also noticed that her face broke out considerably with pimples since the day before. I couldn’t understand how pimples could just appear so quickly.

Mystery solved!

Giving yourself a peanut butter facial is probably NOT the best idea. LOL!

I circled out my daughter’s friend’s face.

Ewww!!!! It’s no wonder he face broke out like crazy. Teens whose skin is prone to break outs anyway (got to love those teenage years) should NOT slather thick, greasy peanut butter on their faces.

I also found out why she had a tummy ache. Late last night her friends thought they would play in the kitchen and create a new recipe.

The drink contains the following: milk, ketchup, Teriyaki sauce, Hershey’s chocolate syrup, cranberry juice and jelly mixed together.

I used to go on sleep overs all the time as a teen but I can honestly say we’ve NEVER did anything that gross and insane before.

The girls DID drink some of it too! There are photos of the girls drinking it too.

Ewww! Ewww! Ewww! My stomach is getting nauseous just THINKING about it!

What ever happened to raiding the cookie jar at midnight?

I have a feeling it might be a while before my daughter is brave enough to go on a sleep over again. LOL!

How things are made?

Call me a nerd but I love to watch shows like Unwrapped or How It’s Made. It’s a lot of fun to learn how everyday items are made. When you open up a can of soup or unwrap a candy bar, do you ever stop and wonder about the whole process, from start to finish, that helped to get that candy bar in your hands?

I love when these shows take you inside the factories and show you how things are made from start to finish. Almost two years ago I was lucky to go on a Marcal Small Steps factory tour to see how they made the paper products that we use. It was impressed by all the conveyors that were criss crossing the factory. There were things flying over head at lightening speeds. It was pretty cool to see.

I also get a kick out of how quickly the machines can print and apply labels to the products that are whizzing through their system. It happens in the blink of an eye!

Have you ever seen the machines that are programmed to act as a picking system? I think it’s really fascinating how machines can find in perfections in a product and quickly remove it from the processing line. It happens in the blink of an eye! I would love to know how they program the system to identify the tiniest imperfection. It’s amazing!

I think the number one thing that amazes me the most is the food products. It’s weird to see things in gigantic vats of dough or some kind of an ooey gooey substance only to see it emerge as something that we eat on a regular basis. The other day I was watching a show, Kid in a Candy Store, that showed you how they made sour candies. At one point they looked like soft taffy, or a really funky looking Play Doh. It looked so good that I wished I could have grabbed a handful to either play with or nosh on. Ha Ha.

How about you? Do you ever watch those “how is it made” type of shows? What is your favorite show? I think Unwrapped is my all time favorite because they cover more then just candy.

Mmmm… now I’m craving candy. I wonder why? Ha Ha.

And the Purpose of a Beta Fish is…?

My kids are home on Winter recess this week. We were all suffering from “cabin fever” so I decided to take the kids out for a bit this afternoon. I needed to pick up new filters for my son’s fish tank so I figured we’d drive over to PetSmart since they are the only place that carries the filters that we need.

While we were at the pet store my son was looking at the other fish on display. He received the fish tank as a Christmas present and originally picked out two fish but one of the goldfish died within two weeks. He’s been toying with the idea of getting another fish but he worried about it dying.

While my son was eyeing the goldfish my daughter was checking out the Beta Fish, otherwise known as Japanese Fighting Fish. There were several plastic bowls with lids on a shelf, each one with a different Beta Fish. They have to be kept separate because they fight with other fish.

As I was helping my son trying to figure out which fish to get I couldn’t help but notice my daughter examining all of the Beta Fish. She seemed especially fond of a small reddish female Beta Fish. I could tell by the look on her face and by the way she was looking over the fish tanks and accessories that she was thinking about getting one.

I finally asked my daughter if she was interested in getting one. She looked at me with a big smile on her face (not a common sight when you have a teenager) and said “Yes, I was thinking about it. But I don’t know if I have enough money”.

I felt bad that I was helping my son pick out a fish, and she really wanted one of the Beta Fish, so I told her she could get a Beta if she wanted to and I would pay for it. The fish, tank, gravel (she wanted hot pink) and a small plant came to $19.00. It was a small price to pay for that huge smile on her face.

My son opted for a “feeder fish” (aka – a fish used to feed other fish). He’s small and white and has a small orange spot on the top of it’s back. Needless to say my son just had to give ”Spot” a home. Spot cost me a whopping .23 cents!

On the car ride home my daughter kept commenting on how active her fish was. She told me that her fish was going crazy zipping around inside of the bag the pet store put her in. At a stop light I glanced back and sure enough her fish was swimming around all of the place. I have NEVER seen a Beta that active before. My daughter told me she was happy that she was going to her forever home and her new larger fish tank.

My daughter may be a moody teenager but she’s still my littler girl. To hear her talking about this itty bitty fish made my heart smile. You could tell she was really in love with it.

At the same time my son kept commenting on how his fish was barely moving. I kept telling him that maybe he was just scared, the whole time saying a little prayer under my breath that the fish wouldn’t die before we got home. After all, he’s a feeder fish. I don’t think he was bred to live a long time.

Once home we quickly set up the Beta’s new fish tank. My daughter named her Snooki after one of the people on the show Jersey Shore. She is not allowed to watch that show but a few of her friends commented on how she looks like Snooki so she thought that was a cute name.

My daughter was goofing around with hair and make up last year when she was only twelve in the above picture. Kind of scary! She can pass as someone older.

Once I had Snooki’s new home set up and Snooki was safe on my daughter’s dresser I cleaned out my son’s tank and introduced Spot to Nippy (I have no clue where he came up with that name). Oddly enough Spot went crazy in the new tank and in a matter of minutes both fish seemed to be playing with each other. It was fun to watch. Now it seems like they are the best of friends. They stay next to each other in the tank. It’s rather cute.

Later on this evening I went into the bedroom to check on our newest additions to our family. My son couldn’t stop rambling about all the things his two fish were doing and how he hopes one is a boy and the other is a girl so we can have baby fish (yikes! I hope not).

My daughter was no as excited. She was lying on her bed, facing her dressing, staring at her fish. She said her fish barely moves. I checked to make sure it was still alive (it was). Snooki just sits there on the bottom of the tank and doesn’t do anything. Every now and then she’ll move but not much.

I feel so bad for my little girl. She was so excited about this fish and now it seems like she is very disappointed. Since my kids share a room it’s hard for her not to hear my son rambling about all the cute things his fish are doing. It actually breaks my heart!

What purpose does a Beta Fish serve? Are they suppose to just lie there and do nothing? Don’t they at least move around a little? They are really pretty (some of them had the most beautiful colors) but they are pretty boring to watch. You also can’t put them with other fish. It seems like a really lonely existance.

I really do feel bad. I’m wondering if I should just get her a small tank like our son has for his birthday and let her pick out a couple of goldfish. At least she can watch them play like my son does. I could always take Snookie and give her a new home in the living room and I can take care of her. I’d put her on my desk but I worry the cats will knock it over.

Hopefully Snooki is just scared of her new environment and she’ll be more active tomorrow.

If you have a Beta Fish and can make any suggestions or give us any advice I would appreciate that a lot.

Is there any place safe in this economy?

I am NOT knowledgeable about finances, politics and the US deficit. I can only go by what I hear on TV or read in the news. Frankly I find it scary and depressing. It’s one of those subject that I sort of rather NOT know what is going on, only because I will lose sleep over it. I’m a mom to a teen and ‘tween. I have enough drama in my life. Ha Ha.

I keep hearing people say that the economy is improving, yet I’m seeing condos in our complex going into foreclosure every other day. I can’t tell you how many condos people just up and walked away from.

We know college students who graduated with degrees who are working at the mall because they can’t find jobs in their field of study.

People have had HUGE cuts in their pay checks. Our family took a $20,00+ hit from my husband’s prior employer. That is how much they cut his pay. Because of that his current employer hired him at the lesser pay rather then what he used to make. I can tell you from experience that trying to make ends meet when you are short $20,000+ a year is easier said then done.

There is a point to my rambling.

My husband heard on the radio this morning that Rhode Island is laying off THOUSANDS of teachers. We looked it up on Yahoo news and sure enough there it was – ALL 2,000 teachers in Providence, Rhode Island have been notified that chances are they will not have a job when the 2011 – 2012 school year begins in the fall. Their school district is facing a $40 BILLION dollar shortage. Less teachers means less schools, more students in each classroom and a severe loss in quality education for all of those students.

WHY did they let the budget get THAT bad? Once officials saw that the budget was heading in the wrong direction why didn’t they do something to stop it?

A few weeks ago we heard from a teacher we know in our school district and a Police Officer, who also works for our town, that 126 teachers are getting laid off and they are going to close down one of the two middle schools (5th – 7th) and push the 9th grades into the high school (currently our high school has 10th – 12th because there are too many students).  Then they are going to try and squeeze 5th – 7th into the Junior High building (there is NOT enough room in that school!).

We are already feeling the effects of all the losses in our school district. Last year our son was in a morning Math class (extra help) that had a teacher, an assistant and 8 students. My son’s Math grade went up 18 points in one quarter! It was really helping him A LOT. This year there is no money for that class. Instead my son has to go to two different classes after school Monday through Thursday to get extra help. Each classroom has one teacher and around 30 students. It’s impossible for the teachers to offer any kind of one-on-one help. Basically if our son doesn’t understand something he’s out of luck because the teachers are stretched too thin and can’t offer one-on-one help for any student.

I’m afraid of what things will be like when they close the middle school and move all the students around AND get by with 126 less teachers.

School closings, teachers being laid off, foreclosures every where, people with PHDs and Masters degrees working at the local grocery store or McDonalds… it’s scary! What has happened to our country?

Is ANY PLACE safe from all of this? Are there any states or cities that some how are immune to all of this, or at least most of it? Where can an average middle class family go to get a quality education for their children and afford to live life the way it was meant to be?

Sadly we might be stuck here in our condo too. Thanks to the loss in income we barely have enough in savings. Because the taxes are sky high in the town where we live and there are foreclosures in pretty much every building, we would most likely have to take a serious loss in the sale of our condo or walk away like others have done. The ONLY money we’d have to put down on a new home would come from the sale of our condo. TRANSLATION – we’re stuck here! Stuck in a town where the taxes increase at an astronomical rate. The neighboring town’s taxes went up 20%. That’s right – TWENTY PERCENT! In one year’s time we went from paying $600 a year in school taxes to $2,200 a year in school taxes. That does not include the property tax. We’re paying over $4,000 in taxes to live here and we only live in a 900 square foot condo with no yard or property.

We did find a 3 bedroom house in the next town over for a price we could probably afford. That is until we found out the taxes were $11,000 per year. That means nearly $1,000 a month goes towards taxes. That wouldn’t include mortgage, utilities, food and the basic necessities.

OH! It’s so depressing and very, very scary. I don’t know what we can do or where can we go. Its seems like there is no place safe in the United States anymore.

The Swiss Family Robinson had the right idea. Too bad we couldn’t go to some deserted island (with electricity and satellite of course – ha ha) and learn to be self sufficient so we can escape all of this insanity.

Sigh…

Stepping down off of my soapbox now.

I’m Addicted to Stumbling!

Do you Stumble? Are you familiar with Stumbling? Have you ever heard of Stumble Upon?

Stumble Upon is an online community that allows its users to discover and rate Web pages, photos, videos and more.  It’s kind of like a serach engine that seeks out content that you wish to find as well as Internet pages that have been “liked” by others.

Its a little confusing at first. I have to admit that I’m still learning how it all works.

First you need to install the Stumble Upon task bar which can be found on the main site, www.StumbleUpon.com.

Once the task bar is installed and you have set up your free account you can start stumbling.

The task bar gives you different options. You can click on the button to stumble, like or dislike a site, share the site with others and you can even review each site too. This is just a brief run down of what you can do. There is a lot more. Like I said, I’m still learning.

To stumble all you need to do is click the stumble button and you will be taken to a website that has been “liked” by others and goes along with the preferences you set up when creating your account. There are dozens of preferences you can choose from including recipes, art, business, news, photography, humor and more.

I have found some of the most amazing photography, mouth watering recipes and helpful websites since I’ve started stumbling. I have several bookmarked adn the rest are kept in my Stumble Upon dashboard so I can go back and access those pages whenever I want.

Here are just a few things I stumble upon that I reall enjoy.

These are just SOME of the great sites I have found just by Stumbling.

If you haven’t tried Stumble Upon you should. Not only is it a great way to find new and exciting websites but it’s also a great way to share the things you like and dislike on the Internet too. Say for example you like a post that someone wrote on their blog or website simply “like” it and Stumble Upon will make sure to share that like with other members.

If you ever like a post that I did you are welcome to “stumble” the post by clicking on the Stumble Upon button found at the bottom of the post or clicking on the “like” button on the Stumble Upon task bar (if you have one installed). You can also manually at the URL to your favorites on your Stumble Upon dashboard. FYI… I would love you forever if you stumble any of my posts. :-)

To learn more visit www.StumbleUpon.com.

FYI… I was not asked to post this. I just thought others might find it equally as entertaining as I do.
