Some people “live” for the summer months. It’s their favorite season. I know people who will spends hours every day next to their pool or who count the hours until the end of the work day on Friday so they can head down to the shore for the weekend. Personally I prefer autumn. That is my favorite season. Summer is OK but there are certain things about the season that bug me – heat, humidity, horrific gas prices, having to squeeze into a bathing suit and of course BUGS!
I’m OK with bugs for the most part. I don’t get freaked out when I see them unlike my kids who are afraid of Ladybugs (I’m not kidding!). There are only two kinds of bugs (insects) I loathe – brown spiders (my mom was killed by a Brown Recluse Spider) and Praying Mantis (those things are creepy!). There are those bugs that do become a bit of a pest, especially this time of year, including ants, flies, wasps/hornets, ticks and mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes are a big concern. Growing up I must have been bitten by mosquitoes more times then I can count. I would be itchy for a day or two and then that was that. These days you have to be especially careful about mosquitoes due to the presence of the West Nile Virus. Where we live the virus has been found in mosquitoes for the past few years. As a mom I am very worried about my children getting bitten by an infected mosquito. That is why I make sure to spray them with bug repellent whenever we are going somewhere that might have mosquitoes or other nasty creepy crawly bugs.
Recently my family went to a family reunion in Pennsylvania which was held at a lake in a state park. The lake was surrounded by woods. The water and the shade made it an ideal habitat for the dreaded mosquitoes. My family HAD to be protected.
We have an assortment of Cutter Insect Repellents including the Backyard Bug Control Spray, Outdoor Fogger, Backwoods Insect Repellent, Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent and the handy Mosquito Wipes.
I knew there was a chance my kids would go swimming so I needed to make sure I brought plenty of spray with me just to be on the safe side. I meant to bring the Backyard Bug Control Spray and the Outdoor Fogger but I totally forgot them at home. Thankfully I had the other products with me.
One thing I dislike most about insect repellents is the noxious scent. Ewww!!! Thankfully the Cutter product didn’t smell bad at all. In fact I actually like the scent of the Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent. It’s made with the oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. I can’t describe for you exactly how it smells but it doesn’t smell toxic like other repellents. It’s a pleasant scent. Kind of like an air freshener scent (for lack of a better description).
The Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent lasts for 6 hours and also repels ticks. That is another reason why I wanted to make sure my family used it. We were in an area with tall grass which is ideal for ticks to hang out in until they find their next victim. Knowing my family was protected against both dangerous “predators” (mosquitoes and ticks) provide me with relief and I knew I could enjoy myself and not have to stress about these things.
The Lemon Eucalyuptus in in a pump spray bottle which gives you better control of how much spray to use. We didn’t have to use much either. We just lightly misted our skin. If it gets on your clothing it’s OK too.
Another Cutter product that is great to have on hand is the Backwoods Insect Repellent. That spray lasts for 10 hours AND it’s sweat proof. This one comes in a spray bottle, not a pump bottle. It’s also unscented which is great. The last thing I wanted to do was cover my family with a stinky spray. I love that it lasts 10 hours too. When you are having a wonderful time with family and friends and having a lot of fun the last thing you want to have to worry about is having to re-apply insect repellent over and over again. With the Backwoods spray you spray once and you should be good for the entire day. Being sweat proof is another huge plus because we all know that many people sweat buckets on a hot summer day, especially people who are active.
If you are interested in having insect protection that is a bit more portable you might want consider the Mosquito Wipes. They are like baby wipes for your skin but they contain insect repellent. The package contains 15 large wipes. You should be able to use one wipe per person depending on how much skin is exposed and how large the person is. With my kids one wipe seemed to work just fine. Since I cover up when I’m out in the sun one wipe worked fine on me too.
You cannot use these wipes on your clothing. It might stain.
I really didn’t mind the scent at all. It was a light, lemon scent (or at least is smelled like lemon to me).
The wipes go on your skin easily. It’s as if they make your skin wet, like water, not greasy or sticky. The stuff absorbed (or dried?) within about a minute. You can even use it on your face. Just be careful not to get it near your eyes or mouth.
The great thing about the wipes is that they are very portable and can easily slip into a purse, tote or backpack. Because they are wipes you can control where to apply it to the skin. You don’t have to worry about accidentally spraying some place you shouldn’t.
I never had a chance to try out the Backyard Bug Control or the Outdoor Fogger. Living in a condo with no property doesn’t exactly give me the opportunity to try them out. I meant to use them at the family reunion but I totally forgot about them. I’m going to pass them along to a family member who has a house/yard.
