I get such a kick out of children’s books. Sometimes they are more fun to read then “grown up” books. My husband actually enjoys the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. We have all the books and my husband is always the first one to read them. Then my kids have to fight over who gets to read it next.
A few years ago my son brought home a book from the school library called Captain Underpants. I thought that was the funniest book idea. Have you read any of the books? If not they are really cute and you should check them out.
The Captain Underpants series is written by author Dav Pilkey. Mr. Pilky also writes another series of books that I just learned about recently called The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby. In fact the second book in the series, Super Diaper Baby 2: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers was just released on June 28, 2011.
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to read both Super Diaper Baby books, although I had to fight my son for them. He wanted to read them first. I saw my husband flipping through the pages of one of the books too so I have a feeling he’s going to read them as well.
The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby and Super Diaper Baby 2: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers is written in a comic book fashion. Rather then just have pages and pages of words with an occasional illustration the entire book is filled with illustrations and text, just like a comic book. Some pages have multiple “frames” and other pages only have a few.
The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby is sort of based on two 4th grade boys name George and Harold. They have their own comic book company called “Treehouse Comix Inc.” They are the class clowns at Jerome Horwitz Elementary School, a school which discourages imagination and fun. The Adventure of Super Diaper Baby books are written and drawn as if they were done by two young boys. There are a lot of spelling errors in the books, but they are done intentionally. I have an 11 year old son. I know that his spelling is not perfect. That is what makes the Super Diaper Baby series seem more “authentic”. If everything was written grammatically correct and the spelling was flawless you wouldn’t think it was written by a 9 3/4 year old and a 10 year old boy. Dav Pilkey writes the books under the persona of being George and Harold.
The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby is about a newborn baby name Billy. He is accidently dropped into a bucket of super power juice and it transformed into a baby super hero. Deputy Dangerous and Danger Dog were trying to steal the super power juice just before Billy landed in it. Deputy Dangerous and Danger Dog want the super juice back so they devise an evil plot to get the juice from Billy with a device they invented called the “Danger Crib 2000″, a crib that can zap super powers from babies. Of course the plot is foiled which leads into the second book in the series, Super Diaper Baby: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers.
In Super Diaper Baby: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers Billy meets up with a villian nameDr. Dilbert Dinkle. One day Dr. Dinkle wakes up to find that he’s been changed into a giant monster made out of pee-pee. Determined to seek revenge he wants to destroy every toilet in town and it’s up to Super Diaper Baby Billy and his best friend, Diaper Dog, to save the day.
Here is the book’s trailer.
The books have a lot of “potty humor”. Not DIRTY like adult potty humor but humor about poop, pee and other things that young kids find funny, much to their parent’s disgust. Think about when you were a child around 10 years old. I’m sure there were times when you and your friends found “bodily functions” amusing.
There were a few times in the books that I sort of cringed at the subject matter but I had to remind myself that these books were written from the view point of two young boys and the books are geared towards children 9-12 years old. Many times I found myself chuckling over the things that are said and the images.
Although the subject matter might not be everyone’s “cup of tea” I still think these are fun books that children will enjoy. I can see there being a lot of books in this series, just like with the Captain Underpants series. The books are pretty quick to read and the illustrations are funny and adorable.
Both books are available where books are sold including Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Check out Dav Pilkey’s website too. It’s a lot of fun! I love his site, www.Pilkey.com.
I have a copy of BOTH books to give to TWO lucky readers. The winners will each receive The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby and Super Diaper Baby: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers.
