I still remember teaching my children the alphabet and how to spell simple words. It seems like only yesterday I was teaching my daughter how to spell “cat” . These days I’m helping her spell words that I have to look up in the dictionary or use spellchecker because even I don’t have a clue.
My son learned to spell his name singing along to a commercial jingle. It just so happens they spell something in the jingle that closely resembles my son’s name. Every time the song would play on the TV or radio we’d sing a modified version of the song to spell out his name. It worked! He knew how to spell his name at an early age (and he has a long name).
I used flashcards to help my kids learn the alphabet and how to spell simple words. They were easy to use but often lost my kid’s interest. I had to buy different flashcards with different images on them just to keep my kids from getting bored of them.
These days there is a fun new way to help your children to learn not only the alphabet and how to spell simple words, but you can also teach them upper and lower case letters at the same time. They are called Alphabeasts.
What is an Alphabeast?
An Alphabeast is a colorful and silly alien-looking creature. Each Alphabeast represents a different letter of the alphabet. The double sided creatures feature an uppercase letter on one side and the lowercase letter on the other side.
Every letter of the alphabet is represented, from A through Z.
Each Alphabeast has it’s own unique personality and their names start with the letter on their chest. For example you have Booeyfus (B), Gumblegoop (G), Lackyloo (L) and Juno (J).
I was sent a sample of an Alphabeast to review. I picked the letter “V” because it’s the letter our last name starts with. I didn’t want to pick a letter that either one of my kid’s names started with because I didn’t want them to fight over the little beast. I figured going with the letter of our last name means he (or she) belongs to all of us.
We were sent the letter V Alphabeast. His name is Vin-Vin. He’s actually pretty cute. All the Alphabeasts are cute but my favorite is Vin-Vin. I also like his colors. Green is my favorite color. Vin-Vin is a yellow-green color (almost like a neon Lime color). The other side is a very nice purple color. My bedroom when I was a young girl was a similar color purple.
I was surprised at just how large the Alphabeast is. I was thinking it was going to be a lot smaller. He’s also very soft and cuddly. I can’t really explain how he feels. It reminds me of a soft velvet. He’s also soft like a pillow. Children could easily use their Alphabeast and a cuddle buddy at night.
Here is our Vin-Vin Alphabeast. Isn’t he cute?
My kids find him amusing too. They are older then the target market but they each expressed an interest in getting an Alphabeast the represents the first letter of their name (K and M).
I think would be a lot of fun to use with children to help them learn the alphabet and how to spell simple words. Imagine how much fun your child or grandchild would have learning to spell their names in Alphabeasts?
The Alphabeasts bright colors and cute faces are sure to keep your child’s attention a lot longer then a simple flashcard.
The Alphabeasts sell for $20 each. It’s a bit pricey to buy the entire alphabet, but this might be something to keep in mind if you are a teacher or work with young children (Pre-K, nursery school, daycare).
Also available are Alphabeasts books which feature all the adorable Alphabeasts characters.
I know it’s a bit early to think about it but these would make a fun holiday gift or birthday gift for a young child. It would make a cute newborn gift too, especially if their nursery has a space theme or is very colorful.
