El Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) Coloring Sheet

Have you ever heard of El Dia de los Muertos? Translated it means ”The day of the dead“. Oooh! Creepy!

El Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican celebration. It is a special day meant to remember, celebrate and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. During El Dia de los Muertos streets near cemeteries are filled with decorations like flowers, candy candy calaveras (skeletons and skulls), papel picado  and even parades.

It is believed that the spirit of the dead visit their families on October 31 and leave on November 2. I guess this has a lot to do with our current Halloween tradition. It’s pretty wild to think about loved ones that have passed on coming to pay a visit for a few days. In a way I wish that was true. I would very much love to see my mom and great grandparents again.

As part of the celebration families make altars and place offerings such as food at the alter. A popular offering is called pan de muertos which is baked in shapes of skulls and figures. Other offerings incldue candles, incense and yellow marigolds. It is also tradition to place a photo of the dearly departed on the alter too.

Children are very much a part of the celebration. They often carry the marigolds in parades.

At the cemetery, music is played and dances are made to honor the spirits.

During El Dia de los Muertos skulls, called Calaveras, are decorated with bright colors and designs with the name of the deceased inscribed on the head.

Calaveras (skulls) are decorated with bright colors with the name of the departed inscribed on the head.

In honor of El Dia de los Muerto Disney created a Calaveras in Kermit the Frog’s likeness, which is only fitting since Halloween is around the corner and the new Muppet Movie opens in a few short weeks (November 23, 2011).

Honestly, I think the image is very freaky. Just the idea of Kermit with teeth is weird. However it is interesting and I know how much kids love to color (some adults too!).
