Keep pets safe this Winter & help raise funds for the ASPCA (Three Winners – Great Pet Prize Package!)

There is a word in the subject line of this post that many people dread hearing – WINTER! I know it’s only late-October, but some places have already had their first snowstorms of the season. I’m sure we’ll be seeing snow here in the Northeast in the next several weeks too.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mind Winter. Snow is pretty and fun to play in. I just hate driving in it and shoveling it. I also don’t like how the snow on the side of the road gets black and gross looking. Blah!

This will be the first Winter since our elderly neighbor passed away. He was notorious for putting globs of rock salt all over the side walk and down the stairs into the parking lot. Some piles of salt were inches thick! He would single handedly go through an entire BUCKET of rock salt in a matter of a few days. I understand that he doesn’t want to slip and fall, but rock salt piled thick on the sidewalk and stairs is not going to make it anymore safer then simply sprinkling it on.

There are three dogs in our building, our dog Espn (pronounced Es-pin), an elderly Pit Bull and a cute little Chihuahua. I know that Espn hates getting the rock salt stuck in his paws. It’s actually painful. I have to constandly dig the salt out from his paws and then wash his feet off when he gets back inside because I don’t want all those chemicals to burn his paws. I certainly don’t want him to licking his feet after stepping it it either. Rock salt can be toxic and make animals sick.

Often we pick Espn up and carry him from the front door to a place on the side walk (or lawn) that is not soaked in rock salt, and then just carry him back inside. I know the owner of the Chihuahua totes him around but it’s impossible for the Pit Bulls owner to do that. The dog is easily 50+ pounds and her owner is 110 pounds soaking wet. She has no choice but to walk through the rock salt.

Morton, who makes table salt, also makes a pet friendly salt to melt ice. It’s called Morton Safe-T-Pet Ice Melt. It was developed with the help of veterinarians. It is actually SALT FREE! It also does not contain chloride like other rock salts. This means the Ice Melt will not irritate a pet’s paws or stomach if they accidentally ingest some of it. It’s also NON-TOXIC. I like that! It’s even better for people and plants.

Morton’s Safe-T-Pet Ice Melt is available in 8-pound easy to pour jugs. The Ice Melt has a light blue color to it so it’s easy to see where you hav applied it so that you don’t use more then you need.

I love the idea of a pet friendly Ice Melt to protect my family – and dog – this Winter. I know that we can melt dangerous ice so that we don’t slip and hurt ourselves. Plus I can feel confident that our dog will not have any ill side effects from the Ice Melt either.

Personally I have not had the chance to try out the Morton Safe-T-Pet Ice Melt yet. We haven’t had any icy condition. As soon as we do I’ll try it out and report back to you on how effective it was.

We put them out in the back yard which has not been salted.

I protect my 3 dogs in the winter months by keeping a close eye on them, and only letting them outside on lead, unless it is over 15-20 degrees. It gets way below zero here in the winter and that is no place for a pet. If it is super cold, they go out one at a time so they can be carried in if needed. We try and use pet friendly ice melt as well.

I keep my dog safe in the winter by only letting her go out under my supervision, and never for very long if it’s too cold. I also have some boxes with blankets in my garage where the feral cats in my neighborhood can take shelter.

I keep my pets safe during the winter months by keeping all chemical or things that can hurt them in the garage on top shelves. They are also indoor dogs so I don’t have to worry about cold temps. I keep them on their heartworm prevention all year around too.
