When I was out on Los Angeles in September I had the opportunity to screen the movie The Secret World of Arrietty. I cannot give you my official review right now since the movie will not be in theaters until February 17, 2012. However I can tell you that I liked it.
The Secret World of Arrietty is the story of a family of little people who live in a secret world, undetected, under the floorboards of a country cottage. The movie is an animated version of Mary Norton’s acclaimed children’s book series “The Borrowers.”
Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) is a tenacious 14-year-old girl who lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts.
One day a 12-year-old human boy name Shawn to stay in the home. He soon discovers his mysterious housemate one evening and a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger.
This is an English language version of The Secret World of Arrietty. It was produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and directed by Gary Rydstrom. The movie comes from Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Ponyo). The screenplay is by Hayao Miyazaki who is one of the most influential and admired filmmakers working in animation today and is a major figure in the Japanese cinematic landscape. His films have inspired moviegoers and colleagues around the world, from Pixar’s John Lasseter to fantasist Guillermo del Toro to Chinese director Tsui Hark, and consistently top the box office in his native Japan.
The movie is done in anime’ and is not in 3D. The movie is not yet rated. I’m sure it will get a “G” rating.
The moral of the story is that even the smallest can stand tall. I’ll leave you to ponder on that.
