I know it’s a bit crazy to think that I am already watching holiday DVDs. Some people watch them in July (Christmas in July). Over the summer Jingle All the Way and Home Alone aired several times on one of the premium channels. Ideally you watch holiday shows and movies during the holidays, but no one would consider you crazy (or at least I hope not!) if you watch holiday shows prior to the holidays.
The 2011 Holiday Guide also officially starts on November 1st (that is my “game plan” at least). Not only do I want to give readers some great gift ideas, I also want to provide other holiday ideas too including entertainment.
I had the opportunity to review the newest addition to the Veggie Tales DVD collection called The Little Drummer Boy. Most people are familiar with the story of the Little Drummer Boy based on the song and the holiday special which originally aired in 1968 from Rankin Bass.
Aaron is an orphan boy who has a lot of anger built up in him. He lets out his anger and frustration on his drum. He is a gifted drummer but he refuses to play for anyone but his best friends, a camel, donkey and a sheep.
One day he meets the Three Wise Men who request that he join them on their journey to Bethlehem to meet the newborn Jesus. Saddened that he doesn’t have a gift to present the newborn King, unlike the gifts the Three Wise Men give him. Then someone suggested that he play a song for Jesus on his drum. At first Aaron was reluctant that his drum playing would be good enough. He quickly realized that his ability to play the drum was one of the greatest gifts he could give. This helped Aaron open up his heart and learn to love humanity again.
When you think about it the movie is rather “deep”. The Rankin Bass version does have some sad moments (I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it). Thankfully the Veggie Tales version is much more light-hearted and funny.
Veggies Tales: The Little Drummer Boy starts out with Junior Asparagus anxiously waiting for his friends to arrive so that they could go out caroling. Junior also loved to play his drum. In fact his drum playing caused him to miss his friend’s knocking at the door for him.
Sad that his friend’s bailed on him (or so he thought) his grandfather offered to read him the story of The Little Drummer Boy. Since Junior loved to play the drums too he was interested in the story.
The rest of the movie goes on to tell the story of The Little Drummer Boy with Junior playing the part of the Drummer Boy. Of course this a Veggie Tales so you know there is going to be a lot of funny things that happen. My favorite was the Gourd who was trying to be a stand up comedian. LOL!
Both stories end up with a happy ending (The Little Drummer Boy and Junior going out caroling with his friends). This is Veggies Tales, of course it’s going to have a happy ending.
One of my favorite parts of the DVD was not even the story it’s self but rather a little clip that aired in the middle (sort of like intermission). Is was a song called The 8 Polish Foods of Christmas. Oh my goodness! I laughed like crazy! It was so funny! It also appears in the bonus features too.
There are plenty of fun bonus features including a Little Drummer Boy music video, a visit to a drum factory (very interesting!) and behind the music of the Veggie Tales version of the Little Drummer Boy. Grammy award winning artists BeBe and CeCe Winans did the song, The Little Drummer Boy, for the DVD.
Children will love the “Make your own drum” activity and the fun interactive book.
Also available is a music CD called Veggies Tales: Journey of the Little Drummer Boy which features the songs from the DVD. Initially I thought it was regular music CD since I saw names like BeBe and CeCe Winans, Amy Grant and Wynonna Judd, but the moment I popped the CD in I realized that the songs were mostly sung by the Veggie Tales characters.
The CD is cute. There is a nice mix of classics and new holiday songs. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it was song by real people and not the Veggie Tale characters. Hearing their cute, squeaky little voices throws me off.
Veggie Tales: The Little Drummer Boy would make a great addition to your family’s holiday collection. Look for Veggie Tales: The Little Drummer Boy where ever DVD’s are sold.
One lucky reader will win their own copy of Veggie Tales: The Little Drummer Boy on DVD.
