I ♥ chocolate. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner if possible. Chocolate bars, candy, cookies… anything that is made with chocolate, filled with chocolate or is covered in chocolate is good for me.
I really enjoy dark chocolate. I like that some what bitter taste you get with dark chocolate compared to milk chocolate. I enjoy all chocolate but if I had to pick a favorite I’d say dark chocolate.
Dark chocolate is actually healthy for you, within reason and of course moderation.
Dark chocolate has antioxidants in it that help fight against the free radicals which have been known to cause health disease and other ailments. It has also been shown to help lower blood pressure. PLEASE NOTE: Dark chocolate will not CURE these health issues, nor is it meant to replace traditional medication. I’m just letting you know that researchers have found that dark chocolate has health benefits. If you do a Google search I’m sure you find plenty of information about it.
The darker the chocolate the better it is for you. The higher the percentage on the chocolate the more bitter and less sweet it is. For example, 85% dark chocolate is A LOT darker then 60% dark chocolate.
Dark chocolate is an acquired taste. Not everyone like is. When I was younger I disliked dark chocolate. As an adult I love it.
One company not only specializes in dark chocolates but they are also socially conscious too.
The company is called sweetriot (lower case letters). Sweetriot sources all of its fair trade chocolate in Latin America where they organize “sweet riots” to promote peace and raise awareness about this delicious and healthy cacao treat.
Sweetriot uses only all-natural cacao and fair trade certified ingredients. They are also the first and only chocolate company to offset all of its carbon emissions and its recyclable. They even feature limited edition packaging that features original artwork by emerging artists. Inside the wrappers I found these interesting hearts and a message to cut the heart out and save it.
Known for their original, all-natural treats made with actual cacao beans, sweetriot has now taken their delicious dark chocolate and created a portion control-friendly bar. Sweetriot’s new riotBar is available in Pure 60% Dark Chocolate with Crunch Nibs, Pure 70% Dark Chocolate and Pure 85% Dark Chocolate available in Net wt. 3.5 oz. (100g) bars. Believe it or not these are even a LOW CALORIE treat. Each little square is only 20-21 calories each. It’s a great way to keep track of your calories AND enjoy a sweet treat at the same time.
I had the opportunity to try the sweetriot chocolates. I received the 60%, 70% and 85%. The 60% had little crunchy nibs in it. They sort of had a coffee taste to them. I think they enhanced the flavor too.
The 60% was a hit with my kids too. They didn’t like it much at first because they’ve never had dark chocolate at that level before but aftere a couple of squares they were hooked on it.
The 70% dark chocolate was only slightly more bitter then the 60%, and without the crunchy nibs in it. The color was even a wee bit darker. If you put nibs in the 70% and gave me a piece of both the 60% and 70% it would be hard to tell much of a difference. With that in mind I would order the 70% in the future because the dark the chocolate the better for you it is.
I was a bit concerned that the 85% would be too bitter for my taste. There is a much more notable difference in taste between the 70% and 85%. The 70% still has a bit of sweetness to it where as the 85% does not. The 85% also tasted a little fruity to me. I don’t know if it was some kind of berry or what, but there was certainly a bit of fruitiness to it.
This is not the kind of chocolate you gobble up in one sitting. This is the kind of chocolate that you take small bites and savor each and every morsel. It’s a gourmet quality chocolate, not something you’d give out to the kids on Halloween.
My only “issue” (and I use that term lightly) with the chocolates is that the little squares were not easy to break apart (at least for my chubby little hands). I would often break off more then a single serving size piece. Not that it mattered much. Whatever I fully enjoyed, even if it was a bit more then a serving size. 🙂 It’s hard to believe each little piece has only 20-21 calories.
Even “A-Listers” like Sarah Jessica Parker, Drew Barrymore, Eva Longoria, Kevin Bacon, Jerry Seinfeld, Jillian Michaels and Dr. Oz to foodie chefs Rachael Ray and Gordon Ramsay enjoy sweetriot chocolate.
Sweetriot is available at Whole Foods and independent retailers nationwide. The bars sell for $3.99. They are also Gluten free and dairy free and are low in sugar.

What’s up with that wacko spam comment up above? haha. Anyway, I only eat dark chocolate, at least 70% (so I get my fix but still feel like its kinda good for me) but I haven’t found one with the nibs in it too. I haven’t seen this brand but maybe I’ll look next time i’m at whole foods market
