The Secret World of Arrietty – Free Coloring Pages

Coming to theaters on February 17, 2012 is the movie The Secret Life of Arrietty. The story is based upon the acclaimed children’s book series by Mary Norton called “The Borrowers.”

I have posted about the movie a few times. Just in case you didn’t get a chance to read the posts, here is a brief synopsis of the film;

Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger. The English language version of “The Secret World of Arrietty” was executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and directed by Gary Rydstrom.

The Secret World of Arrietty is from the legendary Studio Ghibli (“Spirited Away,” “Ponyo”).

Here is the movie’s trailer.

For those of you who like trivia and fun facts, here are some interesting facts about the movie.

-   Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most influential and admired filmmakers working in animation today and is a major figure in the Japanese cinematic landscape. His films have inspired moviegoers and colleagues around the world, from Pixar’s John Lasseter to fantasist Guillermo del Toro to Chinese director Tsui Hark, and consistently top the box office in his native Japan.

-   Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, a top animator at Studio Ghibli, was responsible for the animation in a signature scene in “Ponyo,” in which Ponyo runs atop ocean waves.

-   English language voice talent director Gary Rydstrom is a seven-time Academy Award winning sound designer/mixer (“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”). He joined Pixar Animation Studios as an animation film director in 2003.  His directorial debut for the studio was the Academy Award-nominated short film “Lifted,” and he directed the short film “Hawaiian Vacation,” which was released with “Cars 2” in June 2011.

-   Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are highly successful producing partners whose films, separately and together, include “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “E.T.,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?,” the Indiana Jones films and the Jurassic Park films. In total, Kennedy and Marshall have earned 11 Oscar® nominations.

-   English language screenplay writer Karey Kilpatrick’s credits include “Spiderwick Chronicles” and “Over the Hedge,” which he also directed (with Tim Johnson).

Tackle the ice with Thor

We’ve been lucky this Winter. It’s only really snowed once (about a week ago). Prior to that we’ve only had a few flurries here and there (no accumulations). Of course we did have that freak snow storm days before Halloween. That was certainly “interesting”. Nothing like going Trick or Treating in the snow.

I don’t mind the snow. It’s nice to look at and it’s fun to play in. What I dislike about snow is driving in it (I’m scared to death to drive in the snow!), and shoveling it, not to mention digging my car out. I am grateful that I have a husband and son to do that for me, but there are times when I have to clear the car off myself.

I don’t mind pushing the snow off my car. What I hate is chipping away at the ice. I had a rinky dinky hand held ice scraper. It was hard for me to reach most of the window (I’m not exactly tall). It also didn’t do a good job of scraping off the ice. Plenty of times I’ve had to drive the bus stop with icy streaks across my windshield.

There is a new ice scraper in town that puts all other ice scrapers to shame. It’s called Thor. Thor is the Nordic God that carried a huge hammer. The name seems fitting. This ice scraper is a lot like a “hammer” on the ice. You DON’T bang your windshield with it (NO WAY!). I just mean it’s powerful like a hammer.

Thor is a heavy duty ice scraper that allows you to scrap ice in a back and forth fashion. Instead of just scraping ice in one direction you are doing it in two directions, helping you to get done a lot faster and use your time more efficiently.

It also has a wide “head” so you cover more of an area compared to traditional ice scrapers.

Thor also has a handle which allows you to apply my pressure on that really tough ice, as well as to give you more control.

For “vertically challenge” people like me (short) there is also a telescoping handle. Sadly my handle broke :-( so I can’t use it in that manner anymore. But I can still use the scraper (I just can’t reach as well). I don’t know if it’s a flaw in the design or just a fluke. It’s no big deal. It still works.

Thor comes the ingenious people over at Quirky. You can check out Thor here, http://www.quirky.com/products/72-Thor-Ice-Scraper.

Thor is also available at Amazon and Target.

If you live in an area that experiences a lot of snow and ice during the Winter months you owe it to yourself to pick up a Thor ice scraper. It will make scraping ice off your car a lot easier and quicker.

Even though my telescope option no longer works my husband and I are giving Thor two thumbs up.
