One thing that I have a very hard time with when it comes to eating healthy and trying to lose weight is snacking. Snacking has always been my downfall. I find that late afternoon and in the evening to be the hardest time for me because I really crave some kind of a snack. Oddly enough I don’t often crave sugar. I tend to crave things that are salty (and a lot of cheese too!).
I know when the mood strikes I should grab a piece of fruit or a handful of veggies. I TRY and do that but sometimes I feel like I need more then that. I like to have things that crunch, like cookies, crackers, pretzels or popcorn.
There is a way to get the crispy crunch that I crave without the fat and calories. They are called 34° Crispbreads. They are very low in fat and calories, but “high” in taste.
34° Crispbreads are unlike anything I have seen before. They look like little flat pancakes. How they managed to get them so thin without them cracking into a million pieces I’ll never know. Each crispbread piece is packed with flavor.
These are incredibly light and airy crispbreads. They are almost like wafers. My husband said they remind him of the wafers they give out at church during the Eucharist, except the 34° Crispbreads have flavor. As odd as that comparison sounds, he’s actually correct. They do have a similar consistency.
34° Crispbreads are available in several flavors; Lemon Zest, Cracked Pepper, Whole Grain, Natural, Sesame and Rosemary. I have tried all the flavors and I’d have to say that Seame and Cracked Pepper are my favorite flavors.
These crispbreads were actually created with cheese in mind. I LOVE cheese. I could eat it every day (and I think I do). American, Swiss, Cheddar, Munster… it doesn’t matter. I love most kinds of cheese.
There are many delightful recipes found on the 34° Crispbreads website that utilize the various flavors of the crispbreads. They have a recipe for a Lemon Tart with Fresh Berries for the Natural crispbreads. The recipe sounded SO GOOD but I called for Lemon Curd and for the life of me I don’t know how to make it or where to purchase it.
I did try the Roasted Turkey, Cranberry and and Spinach recipe using the Whole Grain crispbread. The only thing I did was use canned cranberry sauce instead of a freshly made cranberry sauce. I also used Honey Maple Turkey (we didn’t have any plain Turkey). It didn’t turn out as pretty as the picture on the site but it was REALLY good.
There is a recipe for Herbed Chicken Salad using the Rosemary cripsbreads. I’m thinking of doing this with Tuna Salad instead. I always have tuna on hand.
My favorite way to snack on the 34° Crispbreads is spreading some Laughing Cow cheese on them. The low calories, low fat crispbreads combined with the low calorie, low fat Laughing Cow cheese spread make it the perfect snack option. Even my daughter loves to spread the Laughing Cow cheese on them. There are several times when she opted for the 34° Crispbreads with the cheese spread over cookies or some other kind of “unhealthy” snack after school.
I have also used flavored cream cheese on the crispbreads. Even regular cream cheese would work well. I am thinking about using them in Salsa. I think that would taste great, especially the Cracked Pepper and Whole Grain crispbreads.
My kids have used Nutella and peanut butter on them too but they are “heavy” (Nutella and peanut butter) and often break the crispbread as they are spreading it on. They didn’t seem to mind.
These are great to dip in soup too.
You can even eat them straight from the box with nothing on them. I’ve done that plenty of time. Just a few of the crispbreads satisfy my cravings for something crunchy. I also don’t feel guilty if I nosh on a few of them late at night.
A serving size is 19 crackers and a serving size only has 1 gram of fat. Each 34° Crispbread box contains 4 servings. A serving size is 120-130 calories (depending on the crispbread). When you stack up 19 crackers you’ll realize that you get a lot per serving.
These are elegant enough to serve at a dinner party, yet casual enough to toss a few of them in your child’s lunchbox. Because of their unique appearance and light, airy texture, they are sure to be a hit with your guests.
34° Crispbreads are sold at many locations across the country. There is a store locator on their website, http://34-degrees.com/find.php. I see they are sold at Whole Foods Market, Fairway Market, Bristol Farms and Safeway to name a few retailers. You can also purchase them online at Amazon.com.
These crispbreads make a delightful “anytime” snack, as well as a great appetizer at your next family dinner or get together. They go great with cheese and other yummy toppings. The variety of crispbread flavors available allow you to mix and match so that you can come up with your own perfect combinations and recipes.
These are also an idea snack food to help you lose weight. You get all the flavor of regular crackers without the fat and calories. You won’t feel guilty or like you messed up your diet if you indulge in these wonderful crispbreads.
Keep a few boxes at your desk at work to help you avoid making the trip to the vending machine.
