Movie Review – The Greening of Whitney Brown

I grew up around horses. My sister got her first horse, Poko, when I was around seven years old. Even though he was her horse I helped to take care of him plus I had the chance to ride him every now and then. He bit me, stepped on my foot, drooled in my hair and threw me off his back, but I still loved him.

I’ve always loved horses. I think they are beautiful, magnificent creatures. I dream of owning a farm just so I can have a horse or two.

Horses are rather smart too. They can also show affection. They are wonderful creatures.

Growing up I collected Beyer Horses and read a lot of horse related books. I even enjoyed watching movies about horses.

It’s been a long time since I saw a movie that focused on a horse. The most recent if War Horse, which is still out in theaters (and which has been receiving rave reviews). Prior to War Horse I can’t think of any other recent horse movie.

Available now on DVD is a movie called The Greening of Whitney Brown. Although this is not a horse movie, I personally think the horse (Bob) steals the show. To me it’s a movie about an adorable and funny horse with a bratty ‘tween and life lessons tossed in. :-)

The Greening of Whitney Brown is about a young girl (‘tween) name Whitney. She’s a spoiled rich kid who thinks that she’s perfect and wonderful in every way. She’s certainly the kind of person you’d love to hate.

Whitney’s parents have a lot of money and she attends an expensive private school and has plenty of snooty friends. She’s the kind of girl who expects everything to be handed to her on a silver platter.

One day Whitney learns that her father lost his job. As soon as her parents tell her this the family loses everything including their credit cards, furniture and even their posh home. The family has no choice but to move to the country into Whitney’s father’s childhood home.

Up until this point the story line is pretty predictable. Rich city kid moves to the country and has to deal with country living. Not only does she have to get used to farm life, but she has to learn to make friends in her new school.

In a nice, unique twist to this story Whitney is befriended by the farm’s horse. The horse’s real name is Bob and Bob steals every scene that he’s in. He’s super adorable and funny. He thinks that he’s a person and has no problem following Whitney into a store.

At first Whitney is totally against him. She thinks he’s a smelly, slimy, useless creature. Soon he is able to melt her cold heart and Whitney soon realizes that she has a great friend in Bob, unlike her snooty friends back home. She also learns that life is not all about possessions.

I don’t want to give away too many details and spoil the plot for you.

This is a delightful movie for the entire family. You do not need to be a horse lover to appreciate this film. I just think that Bob the horse steals the scenes that he’s in.

Although the idea of rich girl in the country has been played out before (Green Acres, Hannah Montana movie), adding Bob the horse really puts a unique spin on this movie.

The Greening of Whitney Brown stars Brooke Shields as Whitney’s mom and Aidan Quinn as her dad. A bit surprise was seeing Kris Kristofferson as Whitney’s grandfather. Sammi Hanratty plays the title role of Whitney and Odd Job Bob is played by a horse name Bob.

This is the perfect movie to watch for Family Movie Night. It’s not a “girl” movie. My husband and son both enjoyed it (although my son won’t come out and admit it :-) ).

I’d give this movie four out of five stars.

The Greening of Whitney Brown is available now on DVD where ever DVDs are sold.
