A Day in the Life of a Kiddie Academy Franchisee (@KAFranchising)

Over the past couple of weeks I have posted information about Kiddie Academy, even profiling some Kiddie Academy franchise owners.

I read an article about a typical day in the life of a franchise owner. It was interesting so I thought I’d share it with my readers (with permission of course).

Kiddie Academy franchisees tell us that owning and running an academy is fulfilling and allows for a balanced lifestyle.  In order to help you imagine yourself as a Kiddie Academy franchisee, we’ve captured the following “day in the life” descriptions from interviews with Kiddie Academy franchisees.

“As a franchisee, I enjoy the hands on interactions with the staff.  But the most enjoyable aspects of each day are the one-on-one interactions with the parents and children,” says Deborah Brown, owner and director of Kiddie Academy of Holly Springs, NC.

“Being a Kiddie Academy franchisee gives me the benefits that are most important to me! I get to operate my own business with the support of a nationwide organization while simultaneously making a difference in the lives of children and families in my community, and still have the flexibility to participate in my children’s every day busy life,” says Angie Monreal, owner and director of Kiddie Academy of Miami Lakes, FL.

“Every day brings a new adventure because you never know what’s going to happen!  Generally, I check in and address any outstanding issues. I then typically work on the financials and marketing and, of course, pitch in wherever I might be needed. I leave the Academy at the end of the day with a sense of accomplishment and pride in what my team and I have built, and I have complete confidence in my administrative team to keep the Academy on course. Because of this, I am able to take a lot of time for vacations and for my daughters’ after-school activities.  Owning this franchise has completely changed our lives for the better,” says Karen Krupka, owner of Kiddie Academy of Greenlawn, NY.

Whatever the call of the day, Kiddie Academy franchisees have flexibility and a quality of life that is not found in many other professions.

This is interesting information. It actually sounds like a lot of fun. If I had the funds I would seriously consider doing something like this. Especially be I enjoy children and I would love to create a safe, fun, healthy and educational environment for them.

Check out what Nirali and Pinakin Patel have to say about being Kiddie Academy franchise owners.

Nirali and Pinakin Patel opened their Kiddie Academy franchise, which is located at 6534 Old Waterloo Road, Elkridge, Maryland, on September 17, 2007, both at age 31.

As new parents, the Patels understand that quality child care is important but scarce. They are providing local residents with the level of care and compassion for which Kiddie Academy is known.

Background: After working as a data manager for clinical trials for Emmes Corporation and as a project manager for Northrop Grumman, respectively, Nirali and Pinakin Patel decided to embrace their dreams of owning a business. With children of her own, Nirali saw the need for quality child care in her community. Armed with her MBA and her Kiddie Academy training, Nirali guides day-to-day operations at the academy and ensures that personal relationships are fostered with each and every parent and child that comes through her door. Nirali enjoys the sense of community at Kiddie Academy. In addition to building bonds with her Kiddie Academy families, Nirali has the flexibility to spend more time with her 21-month-old son, Ryan, a Kiddie Academy student.

Goals: Although they do not have a background in child care, the Patels’ mix of business savvy and high expectations regarding care for their own children have provided a solid foundation to not only grow their existing academy, but also to open a second location in the area within the next few years.

Challenges: Because this is a new business in the area, the Patels need to get the word out to parents that Kiddie Academy is not like other child care providers – it is better. As more people find out about their academy, the Patels expect enrollment numbers will continue to increase.

Results: The Patels already feel that they have made a difference in their community, and their enrollment is steadily increasing. Parents are very pleased with the service they receive and the Patels’ hands-on approach to business. The children never want to leave.

Seven Tips for Making the Most of your Family Videos and Photos

There is a commercial that I have seen on TV a lot lately for Disney parks. In the commercial it talks about how there are only so many 15th birthdays and so many pirates that need to be fought. There are a few things it mentions but the point of the commercial is that there are only so many memories to make, many of which are once in a life time memories. It’s the once in a life time memories that we need to capture and hold on to so that we can relive them and enjoy them in the years to come.

Most parents take many pictures and home videos of their children to document their first steps, their first words, their first birthday and all the many “firsts” that we experience in our lifetime. My husband and I have so many photos of our children that we can’t even keep count of them anymore. We have at least 30 photo albums, not to mention many discs with digital photos burned on to them. We also have dozens of home movies. We never want to forget a moment of our children’s lives growing up, from school plays to t-ball games and everything in between.

If your family enjoys making family videos and taking plenty of family photos like I do, you might enjoy these great tips from Robert Vince, who is the writer, director and producer of the Disney’s Buddies movies (many of which I have reviewed here on my site).

Seven Tips for Making the Most of your Family Videos and Photos

By Robert Vince

From soccer games, birthdays and graduations to talent shows, holidays and vacations — families today are more active than ever. And everyone seems to be having a great time capturing their memories on mobile devices and digital cameras but despite having high-tech tools at their fingertips, people are still often at a loss as to how to make their videos and photos better.

These tips will help make the most of these “shoots,” no matter how sophisticated (or not!) your family camera is:

1.  Watch your lighting. Natural light is best, but if you’re indoors, it helps to turn on several lamps so the area is well lit. It’s also important to be mindful of any light behind your subject. If the camera doesn’t adjust, this could obscure faces and turn your subjects into moving shadows.

2.  Prepare in advance. Professional photographers always create a list of shots they know their client will want. You can do the same by thinking ahead rather than trying to capture everything on the fly. For example, if you’re filming a birthday party, you can guess there will be a moment when the guest of honor blows out the candles. Plan ahead and scout the best place to stand before the cake comes out, candles blazing. The best shot would then run from beginning to the end of that off-key “Happy Birthday.” Likewise, decide before the event what else you’d like to capture: greeting guests as they arrive, opening presents, any special decorations, testimonials, etc.. Once the party is over, you’ll have a nice sequence of highlights from the event.

3.  Steady as you go. Nothing makes a home video look more polished than the clean control of a tripod. No matter how steady-handed you may be, there are inevitably shakes  and lack of focus that accompany a handheld shot. Sometimes a monopod serves the same purpose and is more portable. Other tricks for steadiness include leaning on a wall, placing your camera on the ground (along with yourself) and drawing your arms close to your body. And finally – something few people know – in a pinch, a conveniently placed lamp can serve as a tripod as the thread on its harp is the same as a tripod’s!

4.  Avoid LP mode. LP stands for long play and although it allows you to record longer, it takes away from the quality of the video. Less is more, after all, and when you look back you are going to want the clearest picture possible.

5.  Point of view. Look for any unusual angles to shoot from – high, low, off-kilter. When photographing children or animals, get down to their level.

6.  Maximize storage. Capturing the image can be the easiest part but once the images are uploaded, they can get lost or forgotten. Yellowing photo albums are now a thing of the past, jump drives are easily lost and some hard drives get too crowded too fast. Many savvy parents have discovered that recordable Blu-ray discs will solve the problem. Blu-ray allows the most storage space (and thus the highest quality) for those special moments families will want to cherish for generations to come. Transferring your older videos and still photos is easier than ever today, and now everything can be conveniently accessible (and safer) anytime you want to revisit a happy occasion. Simply pop the disc into any Blu-ray player or computer with a Blu-ray drive and watch the memories unfold.

7.  Make quality time! The best home videos capture quality time that family members spend with one another. It doesn’t really matter what you do as long as the time is well spent, so make a point to tune out outside distractions (phones, texts, TV) and set aside time to bond. You can do anything: a family hike through a local park, a trip to get ice cream cones, or even a miniature golf tournament. More important than any technical tips is the essence of your adventures.

These are some really great tips. I especially like the one about maximizing storage. We have a Blu-ray burner and we have been slowly but surely burning our home movies from regular discs to a Blu-ray disc. As you know Blu-ray discs are a better quality and they are made to last. Unlike like other discs that can crack or get scratched and ruin precious family memories, a Blu-ray disc is much hardier and with stand a lot of use, being dropped and accidentally rubbed up against other discs (which would scratch a regular disc).

Since burning our home movies on to Blu-ray discs we’ve been able to make a lot more room in our cabinet. The Blu-ray discs have a lot of space on them. We’ve been able to burn several discs onto just one Blu-ray disc.

I can’t tell you how nice it is to have room in my cabinet again. We still have many more discs that need to be burned, but we’re going to get them all done (we just need to pick up more Blu-ray discs to burn on to).

Sometimes when you burn a home movie from one disc to another disc the quality gets compromised. We have not noticed any of that with the Blu-ray discs. The quality is great, just as good as the original. The audio is nice too. Nothing was lost during the transfer/burning process.

The burner that we have is a Sony Portable BD Writer BDX-S600U, BD XL. I’m so glad it’s portable. When I first learned of the burner I thought it was going to be big like our Blu-ray player. We have a burner that burns VHS tapes to DVDs and it’s huge. It also doesn’t work anymore. We just haven’t got around to unhooking it from the TV. The last thing I wanted was another big device on the TV stand.

The Sony Portable BD Writer is just a little larger then a Blu-ray case. It plugs right into your desktop or laptop with a USB port. The USB cable even folds up nicely inside of the unit so that you don’t have to worry about the cord getting kinked or in the way. You don’t need to plug it into an outlet either. It’s powered by your computer. Its a lot like a “plug and play” game. You simply plug it into your computer and you are ready to start burning.

We had a little bit of a hard time figuring out the software but after some trial and error we figured it out. We’re using a different software then the one that came with the unit.

I could give you all the “technical” information but I figured it would be easier just to write about the burner in “layman’s terms” to make it easier. :-)

The Blu-ray burner burns discs to Blu-ray rather quickly. I remember when my husband would burn home movies on VHS tapes to DVD, it would take a long time. The disc to Blu-ray seems to go by a lot quicker.

One of the things I really like most about burning our discs on to Blu-ray discs is that it allows my husband to burn several discs together on one Blu-ray disc (the Blu-ray discs have a lot of gig space). For example, we went to Disney World about 10 years ago. We have several discs (home movies) that we took on the trip. I believe there are 5 or 6 of them in total. My husband was able to burn them all on the SAME Blu-ray disc, in chronological order too! Now we don’t have to dig through cabinet to find all the Disney trip discs. All of them are now burned onto one Blu-ray disc, now marked Disney Trip.

We need more Blu-ray discs! I have to go and buy more. My husband can easily burn several discs on to Blu-ray in one evening from the convenience of his laptop while sitting in his favorite chair. It’s THAT easy!

For more information about Blu-ray discs you can check out the Blu-ray Disc Association, http://US.Blu-rayDisc.com.

SōL Sunflower Beverage by Sunrich Naturals

Is one of your goals for the New Year to eat healthy and stay fit? Even if that is not one of your resolutions for the New Year I thought you might be interested in a rather unique beverage by Sunrich Naturals. It’s called SōL and it’s made from Sunflower seeds. Yes, you read that correctly – Sunflower Seeds!

I enjoy eating Sunflower seeds. I’ve been eating them since I was a young girl. It’s a lot of work to crack open the shells to enjoy the seed but it’s well worth it. You can also purchase seeds that have been shelled for you.

SōL if a beverage that is made out of the seeds (kernels) of the Sunflower seed. Did you know that Sunflower seeds are a potent “superfood”?

One serving of SōL provides you with 50% of the recommended daily allowence of Vitamin E. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxident that helps to destroy free radicals. It also helps to protect your heart and give you healthy skin. It also provides you with Calcium, Vitamin D and Folic Acid.

SōL is made from Sunflower seeds (kernals) which makes is Dairy Free. It’s also Gluten Free.

You can enjoy SōL in a variety of ways. You can simply just drink it like you would a glass of milk or water, use it in smoothies, pour over your favorite cereal or add it into recipes.

SōL is available in original flavor, Vanilla and unsweetened.

Do does SōL really taste like Sunflower seeds? I had the opportunity to try out SōL. When I first poured a glass I was a bit hesitant to try it out. It has a odd gray color to it.

I finally built up the nerve to give it a try. It’s not that bad. It’s very creamy, more so then regular milk. It does have a nutty kind of taste to it. I don’t know if Sunflower seeds would be my first thought if I was given this in a blind taste test. You can tell it’s not milk. My first thought is that it sort of tastes like Soy milk in a way.

SōL was “ok”. It’s not something that personally appealed to me. I don’t think I would purchase it again. Sadly my family didn’t even want to entertain the thought of trying it. As soon as they saw that it has a gray color to it they would totally turned off.

I think it’s more of an acquired taste. If you like Soy milk you might actually enjoy SōL. I don’t like Soy milk either.

SōL is made by Sunrich Naturals. They also make Soy milk as well as roasted snacks including a variety of Sunflower seeds and toasted corn. They also have a line of frozen Edamame.

To learn more visit www.Sunrich.com. You can also find them on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/SunrichNaturals) and on Twitter (www.Twitter.com/SunrichNaturals).

Affordable Valentines Treats & Gifts at Whole Food Market

Have you consider what you are going to give the love of your life for Valentines Day? Valentines Day is a little over two weeks away. I haven’t even though about what to get my dear hubby yet. I’m hoping we can go out to the movies and maybe lunch or dinner out, without the kids. I have a Fandango gift card that I’ve been dying to use. I want to see the movie “Man on a Ledge” or “The Vow“. Hubby wants to see “Chronicle“.

I also try and pick up my husband a little treat or two for Valentines Day. He does the same for me.

If you happen to have a Whole Foods Market near by you can find some wonderful Valentines Day treats for that someone special in your life.

Whole Foods Market Dark and Milk Chocolate Hazelnut Crème Hearts – Nothing says “Be Mine” like a box of chocolates—and you know exactly what you’re getting in this luscious, little package. Bursting with a rich and decadent cream filling, these smooth and creamy Belgian chocolate hearts are filled with a mouth-watering hazelnut cream. You can save even more by skipping the wrapping paper. These chocolates are already bound in a cupid-sized box and bow, so you can just pick one up and go.

I had the opportunity to try these out and let me tell you they are by far one of the creamiest chocolates I have ever had. The Hazelnut Creme is so rich. I don’t know which I liked more, the chocolate or the Hazelnut filling.

I LOVE the way they have the chocolates arranged in the box, complete with a little bow.

Dark Chocolate comes wrapped in Silver foils and the Milk Chocolate come in Red foil.

These are so yummy that you should pick some up for yourself even if you don’t have a sweetheart to share them with this Valentines Day. One chocolate heart is more then enough to satisfy any chocolate craving.

Whole Trade Roses – No matter what they say, every girl loves roses. Delicate and fragrant, these beautiful blooms come in all shades to fit any relationship – from romantic red to friendly yellow. And by purchasing Whole Trade roses, you’re helping to ensure more money to the producers, better wages for workers and sustainable farming practices in Colombia and Ecuador, where the roses are grown.  Prices vary by region. Check your local store for deals.

Whole Foods Market Organic Tanzanian Schoolhouse Project Milk and Dark Chocolate Bars – These Whole Trade, single origin chocolate bars are made entirely from cocoa purchased directly from farmers in the Kyela, Mbeya district of Tanzania and are Fair Trade. Your Valentine will love these milk and dark chocolate treats even more because a portion of the proceeds from ever bar supports education programs for school children in the district.

365 Everyday Value Organic Dark Chocolate Bar with Almonds – This Whole Trade bar is sure to deliver rich cacao flavor and texture with just a hint of bitterness (the good kind). The intense flavor of cacao is balancedeffortlessly with a wonderful organic vanilla extract from Madagascar and organic cane sugar from Brazil, both ethically sourced as well.

Medley of Whole Trade Drinking Chocolates from Allegro Coffee Company -- Your sweetie can drink up with clear conscious, because these Whole Trade products help to put more money into the pockets of producers and ensure sound environment practices.

-   Indian Spice 54 – An exotic, aromatic blend of traditional chai spices and chocolate from the Dominican Republic. Cinnamon, sharply sweet ginger and cardamom balance subtle hints of orange blossom and jasmine for a supremely satisfying drinking experience.

-   Peruvian 68 – Made with cocoa sourced from the edge of the Peruvian Amazon, this cocoa has an upfront sweetness and a hint of fruit and flower for a mild, light drinking chocolate with a pleasing finish.

-   Mayan Spice 68 – Discover the legendary drinking chocolate of the Mayans and Aztecs, complete with its original blend of bold spices. The tantalizing blend of sweet chilies, allspice and black pepper creates a wonderfully warming, invigorating treat for you and your honey.

I have a package of the Mayan Spice 68 drinking chocolate. I am anxious to give it a try. Just my luck we ran out of milk. You need milk for the drinking chocolate, not water like instant hot chocolates. Thankfully we’re going food shopping tomorrow so I can finally give it a try. I’m curious to see what chocolate, black pepper, chilies and allspice taste like together. I’ll update my post as soon as I have a chance to try it out.

I find it interesting that the package gives you two different directions. One is for a “breakfast” drinking chocolate (I would assume that means a regular hot chocolate). The other is for a “dessert” drinking chocolate which is thicker and more chocolaty.

You can check out other drinking chocolates at www.AllegroCoffee.com/Drinking-Chocolate/Flavors.

Whole Foods Market Assorted Chocolates – A variety of 14 bite-sized indulgences sure to please any palate and all wrapped up in a heart-shaped box and bow.

It’s nice to know that quality and affordable Valentines Day gifts and treats can be found at your local neighborhood Whole Foods Market. No need to race around the mall looking for something special. Not unless you plan on getting your sweetie pie something non-food like diamond earrings. :-)

Cafe Escapes, Discount & Spa Luxuries (Giveaway) #YourPerfectCup

By now you should know that I am madly, head-over-heels, truly in love with my Keurig. :-) It’s by far my most favorite appliance in our home. I cannot go a day without using it.

Most people associate Keurig and K-cup portion packs with coffee. Some might even think about tea. But did you know that you can make MORE then coffee and tea with a Keriug? How about rich, dark chocolate hot cocoa? Or sweet Chai Latte? Mmm!

There are many brands that offer K-cup portion packs for the Keurig. I have reviewed several of them over the past year. I’d now like to tell you about Cafe Escapes.

Cafe Escapes offers Keurig users something different than coffee and tea. They offer rich indulgences like Cafe’ Mocha (a combination of cocoa and coffee), Milk Hot Chocolate, Dark Hot Chocolate and Chai Latte.

I have had the Cafe Escapes Milk Hot Cocoa before. In fact I’ve been purchasing it for the past couple of years from a local store. I didn’t know that Cafe Escapes offered Cafe Mocha, Chai Latte or even a Dark Hot Chocolate.

As a Keurig Brand Ambassador I received samples of all four varieties to try out and share with family and friends. I tend to share my K-Cup portion packs with others. This time I might just keep them all to myself. LOL!

I have already been using the Milk Hot Chocolate for some time now. It’s perfect for me. Not too sweet. It’s just right. Sometimes hot cocoa mixes tend to be too sweet for my personal preference. I have found that the Milk Hot Chocolate make a perfect cup for hot chocolate for me.

The first K-cup portion pack I tried was the Cafe’ Mocha. It’s a sweet combination of cocoa and coffee. To me it takes more like cocoa but with a bit of a kick to it. My husband had a cup. He doesn’t drink coffee. He liked the Cafe’ Mocha but did say that he noticed there was a little more to the taste then just regular cocoa. It wasn’t until after he started to drink it that I told him it was also made with coffee. He was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it too.

I like Chai Latte. I have ordered it when I’m out and about or out to dinner. The Cafe’ Escapes Chai Latte smells amazing! The aroma alone is enough to make you drool. I did find that this K-cup portion pack was too sweet for me. I have to remove some of the hot water with the Chai Latte mixed in and then add more hot water to water it down a bit so it’s not as sweet. I’m not suggesting that there is anything wrong with it. There is not. It’s just too sweet for my personal preference.

I was really excited to try the Dark Hot Chocolate. There is an obvious difference between the Milk and Dark Hot Chocolate varieties. The Dark Hot Chocolate is richer. I don’t know if it tastes like dark chocolate, but it’s much more “chocolatey” then the Milk Chocolate variety. Toss in some marshmallows and you have a delightful and super delicious treat.

All four of these wonderful and indulgent coffee house treats are specially blended to allow you indulge and enjoy more “me” moments. I agree with that because I have been enjoying some quiet time with a hot cup of one of the Cafe’ Escape varieties and a good book or magazine during the day when the kids are at school. Ahhh… perfect!

To learn more about Cafe’ Escapes please visit Cafe’ Escapes on Facebook, www.Facebook.com/CafeEscapes. If you “like” their Facebook page you will be entered into a “sweet” giveaway for a year’s worth of spa quality indulgence. Check it out!
