Disney Pixar Brave – New movie clip now available

Coming to theaters on June 22, 2012 is the newest Disney Pixar movie, Brave. It will be shown in Disney Digital 3D in select theaters.

Brave stars the voice talent of  Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Julie Walters, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson and Robbie Coltrane.

Here is the movie’s official synopsis.

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.

Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Check out the new clip that is available called “The Prize“. For those of you reading this via e-mail you can see the clip here, http://youtu.be/Y4EZULqhP2E.

Even my husband was impressed by Merida being able to split the other arrow in half. I like how it’s shown in slow motion too.

A Life Ascending – Documentary Review

I love a good documentary. Unlike reality shows which I personally feel are often scripted, documentaries show you how life really is for the people featured in it. That is why when I was asked to review the documentary A Life Ascending I jumped at the opportunity.

The official film synopsis is as follows;

A Life Ascending chronicles the life of acclaimed mountaineer Ruedi Beglinger. Living with his wife and two young daughters on a remote glacier in the vast mountains of British Columbia, Beglinger has built a reputation as one of the top ski mountaineering guides in the world.

The film follows his family’s unique life off the grid and their journey in the years following a devastating avalanche that killed seven people. Documenting the sublime beauty and ever-present risk of a life lived on the edge, the film ultimately explores the power of nature as both an unforgiving host and profound teacher.

I was initially drawn to this movie because I was curious as to why someone would want to live their life high above in the mountains, far away from civilation. My first thought was that they lived like the Swiss Family Robinson, feeding off the land and making tools out of wood and rocks. That is not the case at all. Their home and lodge have all the modern conveniences including electricity and Internet.

In this documentary we meet Ruedi Beglinger, his wife Nicoline and thier teenage daughters Florina and Charlotte. Together with some lodge staff and their dog, the family resides in a home high up in the mountains, far removed from the rest of the world. The only way in and  out of their lodge is by helicopter.

The snow where they live looks like it must get at least 10 feet high, or higher! They build paths to get around between the buildings and the helicopter launch pad that have walls that must be at least 10′ high.

Ruedi was born and raised in the mountains. He can stay away from the mountains for a short time but his heart always brings him back. Ruedi is not only an accomplished skier and guide but also an avid rock climber too.

Each week new guests arrive at the lodge. Every day while they are there Ruedi takes them high up into the mountains to ski. Some people are a bit put off with Ruedi’s “my way or the highway” attitude, but they understand that he’s only like that for their protection.

Back in 2003, Ruedi and a group of skiiers he wsa guiding got caught up in an avalache. Six people survived, seven people tragically lost their lives in the avalache. Even though it’s been many years the pain from that event makes its way into Ruedi’s life every day. Not a moment goes by when he doens’t think about what happened and the lives that were lost. Even though he’s come to term with it the pain and memory will live on in his heart forever.

I was most interested in the children. I thought maybe they would feel like they were missing out on life being so secluded and cut off from their peers but the girls seem very happy and well adjusted. In fact they enjoy their lives in the mountain. They have their own private teacher and stay connected to their school in town. I would be curious to see how the girls are a few years from now when they are older and interested in boys and things like attending the prom and graduation.

There was a very interesting side story in the film about a young man who came to the lodge to ski and fell madly in love with the life they lived that he worked for them six months out of the year. Sadly he was one of the seven individuals who lost their lives on that fateful day. Interestingly enough the girls had just finished reading a book (sorry, the name escapes me) where souls come back to the Earth as Ravens. A few days after the avalanche a Raven magically appeared at the lodge. The girls feel that the Raven is the reincarnation of their friend who lost his life in the avalanche. At the time the documentary was filmed the Raven had returned to the lodge every Winter for four years. Ravens are not indigenous to that region. I find that to be truly fascinating.

I can’t even describe how breathtakenly beautiful the mountains are in the documentary. Sometimes they are beautiful beyond words and other times they are very scary and foboding. They can be a thing of true beauty and at times deadly. I also amazed me just how much walking and climbin the skiiers had to do in order to reach the highest points to launch from.

A Life Ascending is available on DVD on February 28, 2012. There are also bonus features including interviews with film’s director and composer, a short clip on how Ruedi almost lost his foot, “Growing up on the glacier” which is the girl’s perspective on their lives in the mountain and a Q&A session at the Banff Film Festival.

Love My Body Beauty Products

I have mentioned before on my site that I love to do beauty product reviews. It’s fun to try out different products. It’s also a great way to discover new favorites.

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to try out a couple of products from Love My Body. I received two products to try out – Beat the Rush and Safety Blanket. All of their products have very unique names.

Beat the Rush is a product designed to help minimize the redness in your face if you suffer from Rosacea or other skin ailments that cause your skin to look like you spent too much time in the sun and got sunburned.

My dermatologist determined that I suffer from Rosacea. While mine is not as severe as others that I have seen, I still find it very bothersome. I can usually cover it up with a lot of make up. However I prefer not to wear much make up, or no make up at all, so covering up the Rosacea and red skin is not as easy.

Beat the Rush is not meant to cure Rosacea. It is only meant to help minimize the appearance of overly red skin.

I have been using Beat the Rush for over a month now. When I don’t have any make up on my skin still looks like I was out in the sun too long (meaning it’s red) but I noticed that my face doesn’t look as blotchy as it used to. My skin used to have spots that were redder then the rest of my face. Not little spots each. Some were fairly large, like the size of a quarter or bigger.

Since I have been using Beat the Rush it would appear that my skin is more balanced and there are no blotchy red spots. My skin still appears red, but because it’s more even looking now I can cover it up with make up a lot easier. Instead of having to put the make up on heavily in the really red area I just have to dust the powder across my whole face with no need to focus on any one spot. Applying make up is actually a bit faster and easier now.

The other product I have been using, and that I love, is the Safety Blanket Gentle Hydrating Lotion. As soon as I step out of the shower or wash my face at night I am quick to apply the Safety Blanket lotion. I love how it instantly makes my face feel hydrated and “cool”. It’s like splashing your face with fresh, cool water.

A little bit of the Safety Blanket lotion goes a long way. I find that I just need a small squirt of it to moisturize my entire face.

Initially I was concerned that it might feel too heavy on my skin but that is not the case at all. It also doesn’t aggravate my sensitive skin or cause breakouts. I also love how soft my skin feels once I apply it.

Most days I just apply Beat the Rush and Safety Blanket on my face and a smidgen of mascara. My skin feels great all day long. I love that it doesn’t feel weighed down either.

Both products smell amazing too. They remind me of baby products. They have a baby product scent to them.

I’m giving the Love My Body products a two thumbs up. Most especially the Safety Blanket Gentle Hydrating Lotion.

Love My Body carries products for most skin types and skin “issues”. To learn more about these and other products they offer visit www.LoveMyBody.com.

New! Build-a-Bear Workshop Fun Packs

I love going to Build-a-Bear. Over the years myself, my kids and even my husband have made our own little furry friends from Build-a-Bear. My husband did it once because he said he didn’t want to be left out from the fun of making one (LOL). I’ve made a few of them myself because I love to dress them up in holiday attire and use them as decorations around my home. I lost track of how many critters my kids have made from Build-a-Bear over the years.

I know that Build-a-Bear is always a hit with children. Who doesn’t have fun in that store?

Have you seen the new Build-a-Bear Workshop Fun Pack plus Furry Friends? Build-a-Bear has “miniaturized” the Build-a-Bear experience in a cute compact package that is stuffed with fun.

This new collectible features 12 famous Build-a-Bear Furry Friends and comes complete with Shirt, Activities, Fabric Stickers, Trading Cards a Bearville.com code and, of course the Heart and Ceremony to bring your furry friend to life. I think it’s a really cute idea.

I have one of the mini Build-a-Bears on my desk. I should have taken a more current picture of him because I used one of the fabric stickers on his shirt. I think the fabric stickers are a fantastic idea because you can embellish the shirt with your favorite design and when you are ready for a new look simply peel off the current sticker and add a new one. Plus you can mix and match the fabric stickers with the other miniaturized plush critters too.

Aside from the adorable mini-friends I think kids are going to love the trading cards. Each pack has 2 trading cards, a tattoo set, scratch off activity card and a special online code card that you can use on the Build-a-Bear online game site, Bearville.com.

The suggested retail price for the mini-plush kit is $5.99 and the price for the trading card sets is $1.99. You can find them at Build-a-Bear workshops, Target, Walmart and Toys R Us.

I think the mini-plush kits would make the ideal party favor or stocking stuff. You could also use them as rewards or give them to a child “just because”.

Children, especially those who are really into Build-a-Bear, will love the trading cards. I could see children collecting them and trading them with their friends. Trading cards is an ageless past time enjoyed by many children over the years. I used to trade baseball and football cards when I was younger. The trading cards would also make great party favors and stocking stuffers too.

For more informaiton about Build-a-Bear or to find a location near you please visit www.BuildaBear.com. You can also find them on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/BuildaBear) and on Twitter (www.Twitter.com/BuildaBear).
