American Reunion available on Blu-ray & DVD July 10, 2012

Way back in 1999 the movie American Pie was released in theaters. I can’t believe that was thirteen years ago. Time flies way too quickly!

I think it’s fair to assume that most people have seen the movie, or at least heard about the movie.

American Pie follows a group of high school seniors prior to graduation. The core group includes…

Jim (Jason Biggs) – Jim is still a virgin who has a crush on a foreign exchange student named Nadia. He ends up dating a nerdy girl from the high school band name Michelle (Alyson Hannigan)

Oz (Chris Klien) – Oz is a jock who usually does well with the ladies. One girl especially has his eye, Heather (Mena Suvari), but she’s not into his “jock/party” world. She’s more concerned about graduating so she can go to college.

Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicolas) – Kevin has been dating Vicky (Tara Reid) for a long time and is hoping to consummate their relationship before heading off to college.

Finch (Eddie Kay Thomas) – Finch is a bit more mature than his friends. He comes across as being worldly and very smart. Finch has a crush on his friend’s mom (Jennifer Coolidge). They refer to her as MILF (I think that is the first time that term was ever used).

Stifler (Sean William Scott) – Stifler is the ultimate party guy. His world is consumed with thoughts of sex, girls and partying. He tends to be rather obnoxious and curses a lot.

There have been several other American Pie movies but only the second film (American Pie 2) and the third movie (American Wedding) featured the entire cast. The other American Pie movies, in my opinion, are just films about sex and raunchy jokes. Not exactly something I have any interest in. They are geared more towards the college crowd.

American Reunion reunites the original cast from American Pie including Jim’s Dad (Eugene Levy), Stifler’s mom, Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) and Jessica (Natasha Lyonne) to name a few.

American Reunion shows us what life is like for the American Pie characters 13 years after they graduated high school. There was supposed to be a 10 year reunion but it never happened so their school is hosting a 13 year reunion.

Life is a bit different for the characters now. Jim and Michelle, who married in the movie American Wedding, are now parents. They also find that their ‘couple time” (if you catch my drift) is seriously lacking.

Jim and Michelle spend the reunion  weekend at Jim’s dad’s house. Jim’s dad has been very down since his wife (Jim’s mom) passed away. Jim now takes on the role of “dad’ and tries to offer his dad the fatherly advice he once offered Jim.

Jim also has to deal with his 18 year old neighbor that he used to babysit who now has a serious crush on him.

Oz went on to Hollywood and is now a sports caster. He even participated in a dance show. He has a girlfriend but when he happens across Heather, who is also dating someone, old feelings are brought up and they realize that they still love each other.

Kevin is now a stay at home husband. He loves his wife but finds his life rather boring. He does meet up with Vicky who is also in town and he becomes concerned that something might happen between them.

Finch rolls into town with grand stories about his worldly travels and experiences. Everyone is impressed with how Finch’s life has turned out except they don’t know that Finch has a huge secret he is keeping from them.

Stifler now works in an office but he has not changed one bit. He’s still raunchy and obsessed with women and sex. He acts like he did when he was a teen but this doesn’t goes over well in the “real world”.

The movie explores the various relationships between the couples as well as the guys. There is some nudity (including full frontal male nudity) and plenty of references to sex. This is certainly NOT a “kid friendly” movie. It’s rated R. I wouldn’t even let my 15 year old see this film. I wouldn’t be too keen on an 18 year old seeing this movie, but sadly, at 18 they are old enough to see it on their own.

The movie was OK. It wasn’t as good as the first movie but it was A LOT better then the the rest of the movies in the American Pie series. I liked that they threw in a few elements that you wouldn’t expect, like Jim trying to help his father move on after the loss of his wife (Jim’s mom). It was also fun to see the original cast including Jessica, Nadia and Sherman. They truly did bring back every original character from the first movie which I’m sure was not easy to do.

There are plenty of bonus features deleted and extended scenes and an interesting behind the scenes look at what it took to bring back all the original characters and interviews with the characters and what it was like to be reunited with their cast mates. There are plenty of other bonus features too. There is one called the Out of Control Track that I thought was going to be funny but I wasn’t very impressed.

In honor of this release, the American Pie Facebook page just launched a special “Dance Like Oz” competition with Tout that you might enjoy.

The grand prize winner will receive an American Reunion prize pack and tweet from Chris Klein who plays the character Oz in the movie.
