What does your STATE smell like?

How is that for a subject line? LOL!

Does your STATE have a scent? Probably not. It’s not like you can visit your local high end department store and find scents in the perfume department like Eau De California or a Florida scented body spray. Although that could be interesting.

I was recently asked by Better Homes & Gardens to come up with a scent to represent the state of New York where I live. They asked that I use their Better Homes and Gardens Scented Wax Cubes and Wax Warmers to create a scent for New York. Challenge accepted! :-)

When people hear you are from NY it’s common for them to automatically think New York City. I love New York City. It’s an amazing place to visit. We visit it as often as we can. However there is so much more to this big beautiful state that I live in. We have mountains, lakes, tons of outdoor activities, huge farms and so much. When creating my scent I thought about New York as a whole, not just the city. Besides, Better Homes & Gardens doesn’t make a subway scented wax cube. Ha Ha.

Here are the scents that I combined to come with the scent of New York State. I had to cut the cubes in half to make them all fit in the warmer. The first time I tried with four full size cubes they wouldn’t all melt. I tried again but this time I cut the cubes in half and they melted fine.

Better Homes & Gardens Crackling Campfire: I used this scent to represent all the fun outdoor activities that you can do in NY including camping, fishing and hiking.

Better Homes & Gardens Evergreen Forest: One of my favorite places in New York next to NYC is the Adirondack Mountains, especially the Lake George area. I used the Evergreen Forest scent to pay homage to the beautiful mountains and state parks our lovely state has to offer.

Better Homes & Gardens Apple Cider: I’m a “country bumpkin” at heart. I grew up upstate where there were plenty of farms. One of my favorite things to do with my family is apple picking. It’s also happens during my favorite time of year – Autumn. I used this scent to represent all the farms located in our state and one of my favorite family activities. Autumn is also a great time to visit New York. We have plenty of colorful trees, just like Vermont and New Hampshire do.

Better Homes & Gardends Cinnamon & Spice: Of course I had to add a scent for New York City too. Since people always think New Yorker’s have “attitude” (not always in a bad way either) I thought I’d add in a touch of spiciness, so I added some Cinnamon and Spice.

My kids tell me that my New York scent smells great for the holiday season. I think the Evergreen Forest (Christmas tree?) and Cinnamon & Spice scents come through a lot. The campfire scent that is mixed in does remind me of a fire from a fireplace.

Walmart has a nice selection of Better Homes & Gardens Scented Wax Warmers. They are a lot safer than burning candles because they use the warmth of a light bulb to heat up the wax cubes, not a fire. They are also pretty and could add a nice decorative touch to any room in your home.

  • Fill your home with your favorite fragrance, for less
  • Attractive wax warmers are just $15 and scented wax cube packs, start at only $2 each
  • Safe to use with no flame or soot
  • Easy to re-use and clean

There are dozens of scented wax cubes to choose from. You can buy individual packages at your local Walmart (selection may vary from store to store). You can also order online but they are only available in packs of 20 (5 scents – 2 of each). There are six wax cubes per package. The wax can be reused or recycled. When I’m done using my wax burner I simply pour the melted wax back into the container. It hardens  quickly and I can reuse it again and again. It appears to keep it’s scent too. I’ve been using the Evergreen Forest a lot since I purchased it and it still smells just as lovely as it did the first time I used the wax.

I hope that everyone likes my scent that I created for the state of New York using the Better Homes & Gardens scented wax.

I am NOT a fan of popular voting type things, but, there is a chance 10 She Scribes readers could win a $25 Walmart gift card (each winner will received one gift card). Additionally, 10 randomly selected voters will be chosen to win a Wax Warmer and a 6-pack of Wax Cubes.

The contest will be on the Better Homes & Garden’s Facebook page www.Facebook.com/BHGLiveBetter. The contest doesn’t start until August 1, 2012. I’ll post about it on that date as well as a link to where you can vote for my scent creation (or your favorite scent creation – which I hope is mine :-) ). I’ll also share the link on my blog’s Facebook page and on my blog’s Twitter page.

Wish me luck! If I win I get a trip to the Better Homes & Garden’s headquarters. That would be cool.

If you had to create a scent for YOUR state, what would it smell like or what scents would you combine? Feel free to comment.  always enjoy reading comments from readers.
