I would never consider myself a “foodie”, but I sure do love food (I think my rather “plump” appearance will tell you that). Unlike my overly picky husband and daughter, I enjoy trying new foods and recipes. Thankfully my son tends to be more like me than my husband. My son will entertain the thought of trying something new. Maybe not all the time, but at least he does make the attempt from time to time. I don’t know if it’s because he’s like me, or he’s a growing teenage boy who is steadily eating us out of house and home (ha ha).
Many times I’ll happen across a new food product in the grocery store (or other stores that sell food) that looks really good and I quickly purchase it without much thought – only to get it home, try it and realize I don’t like it. I really dislike wasting money like that. Sometimes I’m able to pass along the item to a friend or relative so at least it isn’t a total waste.
Being a blogger that does reviews has also given me the opportunity to try out new foods and beverages that I might not otherwise have the opportunity to try out, or perhaps I might have overlooked in the store.
If you love food, and love exploring and sampling new food products (“try before you buy”), then I have an interesting site for you. It’s called Love with Food. Love with Food is a monthly food service that delivers samples of high quality, gourmet foods right to your door. Not only is it a surprise to see what you receive, it’s also fun to try out new foods without worrying about wasting money on full size products.
Each month Love with Food ships out boxes that contain 8 gourmet samples to subscribers. If you love the food you can go online and purchase more (full size products) or check out your local gourmet store or grocery store to see if you can find the full size product.
There are four different subscription options.
One year (12 months) – $120 with FREE shipping
Six months – $66 ($1 shipping)
Three months – $36 ($2 shipping)
One month – $10 plus $2 shipping
Each month is $10.00. The only notable difference is that the more you subscribe the less the shipping cost.
I like that you don’t have to commit to anything long term. You can try it for one month and if you are not happy you don’t have to subscribe again.
Each month the contents of the box is completely different so you don’t have to worry about receiving the same products each time.
I was sent the box for August which contained the following items.
- Vegan Lemony Lemon Cookie by Sun Flour Baking Company (it is spelled “flour”, not “flower”).
- Vegan Peanut Butter Cookie by Sun Flour Baking Company
- East Shore Key Lime & Ginger Mustard
- Skinny Dipping Pretzels
- Dried Montmorency Cherries by Cherry Bay Orchards
- Coconut Toffee Peanuts by Sconza Candy
- Glee Gum
- 2 pieces of Gin-Gin candies (Ginger & Caramel) from the Ginger People
I’ve had the opportunity to try out all of the products. I LOVE the East Shore Key Lime & Ginger Mustard! If I would have seen that in the store I probably would have walked right past it. The idea of the flavors of Key Lime and Ginger mixed with a mustard didn’t sound too appealing. Since the little jar I received was meant to sample the mustard I gave it a try. WOW! It’s only made with Vinegar, Sugar, Mustard Flour, Eggs, Ginger, Pure (cold pressed) Key lime oil. It’s not made with a lot of chemicals that you can’t pronounce. I love mustard and I love how this mustard has a bit of a “kick” to it, but not in a spicy way. You can really taste the lime. The ginger taste is more subtle but you can tell it’s there. I would certainly purchase this again. Having the Skinny Dipping Pretzels in the box to use with the mustard was perfect.
I thought the Gin-Gin candies were hard candies. It turns out they were soft and chewy. Caramel and Ginger make for an interesting flavor combination. They taste more like ginger than caramel. They are VERY flavorful. If you love the taste of ginger you’ll love these candies. I would buy them if I saw them on the store shelf.
I wasn’t too keen on the cookies. They seemed like they were lacking something. Maybe it’s because I’ve never had Vegan cookies before and I’m not used to them.
I loved the Coconut Toffee Peanuts. I love peanuts. I love toffee and I like coconut for the most part. These had just a hint of coconut to them. I only wish this was a bigger bag. This is another product I would purchase if I came across it while shopping.
I’ve had Glee gum before (I did a review years ago). So I was already familiar with that product.
The dried cherries were nice. I actually used them as a topping on a spinach and feta salad that I made. YUMMY!
If it wasn’t for the samples I received in the Love with Food box I would have missed out on some delightful treats.
You can no longer order the August box. You can order the full size products from this month’s box on their site. They are now taking orders for September’s box. The last day to order is August 31, 2012.
You can save $2.00 off September’s box if you use the discount code SCRIBESVIP upon check out. This discount expires on August 31, 2012.
I like the idea of “try before you buy” gourmet foods. I also think this is a fun gift idea for a “foodie”, or maybe even someone who lives alone (they are samples and not meant for entire families to try). Maybe even an elderly person in a nursing home or a college student.

I really would be interested in all kinds of gourmet food. I think sweet or savory, like maybe varieties of nuts flavored differently would be good.
