See’s Candies – A long time family favorite

My mom passed away in 2003. It goes without saying that I have a lot of fond memories of my mom. From how she used to wear curlers in her hair every night to how she would never leave home without wearing lipstick – ever! For mom, going out of the house without lipstick on was like leaving the house butt naked. :-)

One of the memories I have of my mom is her love of See’s Candies. We don’t have any stores on the East Coast (none that I’m aware of anyway). My mom used to bring home See’s Candies when my parents used to spend the Winters in California. I have a brother who resides in California. Every Mother’s Day, Christmas and whenever he’d come back to New York to visit, he would bring my mom a box of See’s Candies. There is nothing really unusual about that except for one thing – my mom would not share ANY of the See’s Candy with ANYONE. I’m not exaggerating either. My mom would give you the shirt of her back and give you every penny she had, but when it came to See’s Candies she was a whole different person.

I’m in my 40′s now. My mom was enjoying her special box of See’s Candies for as long as I can remember, however I have never even tasted a single piece – ever!

I’ve always been curious to see what was so special about See’s Chocolates which would make my mom cherish them as much as she did (she went so far as to hide the chocolates!).

I had the opportunity to try out some See’s Candies for myself. Now I can truly understand why my mother was so “obsessed” with them – they are unbelievably delicious!

I was sent some See’s Candies to try out and review. I received the following items (prices and item number included):

#448 – Silver Box $9.70 – Dark and milk chocolates, creams, nuts and other assorted varieties.

#334 – 1 lb. Nuts & Chews $16.90 – I ordered mine in dark chocolate but it’s also available in milk chocolate. It contains English walnuts, almonds, chewy Caramel, honey Scotchmallow and other chocolate chews or chocolate with nuts.

#474 – 8 oz. Truffles $9.70 – Dark Chocolate Chip, Café  Au Lait, Lemon, Key Lime, Café Hazelnut and Raspberry all covered in either See’s delcious milk, dark or white chocolate.

#9172 – Lollipop Assortment $7.35 – Long lasting lollipops in Vanilla, Butterscotch, Chocolate and Café Latté. I’m enjoying the chocolate one as I type this. These are not your typical lollipops.

#25 – Chocolate Bars $6.40 – This four pack comes with Milk Chocolate, Milk Chocolate with Toffee Nuggets and Dark Chocolate with Almonds.

My mother wasn’t wrong – See’s Candie’s are special. I have tasted many different kinds of chocolates in my lifetime and I must say that See’s Candies are the best I have ever had the opportunity to try.

The first thing that I notice is that these chocolates taste very fresh, as if they were made mere moments before they were shipped to me. Sometimes chocolates have an artificial or overly processed taste to them. Not See’s. These taste like homemade chocolates that your great-grandmother would have made

Another thing I really enjoyed about See’s Candies is the varieties. Their mixed boxes contain and delightful assortment. I only wish that the boxes had a “map” so that you knew which one you were eating. Personally I don’t mind. I enjoy surprises, but my kids and my husband tend to be a bit more picky (Yes, I did share MY See’s Candies – LOL). My kids would poke and prod at the chocolates to find out if it was something they would like. There is nothing worst then seeing a perfectly good chocolate getting tossed out in the garbage because your child didn’t like the taste. :-) They did enjoy the lollipops so then usually opted to have one of those over the boxes chocolates.

My favorites were the nuts and chews. I love nuts! All kinds of nuts. I never met a nut I didn’t like. Unlike other chocolates with nuts, the See’s Nuts and Chews are STUFFED with nuts. One of the candies I had seemed like it was more nut than chocolate. Let’s just say they don’t skimp on the nuts.

I used to think that See’s Candies were very expensive, and that is why my mom was reluctant to share them. That is not the case at all. See’s Candies are surprisingly affordable. I included the prices on my See’s Candies (above). All  of them were under $10 except one box. Look at all the goodies you can get for under $10.00. Not only are they great to enjoy yourself but they also make wonderful gifts and treats to keep on hand for guests.

In total there are 30+ gifts/treats for under $10.00. There are also about 40+ items in the $10-$25 range, as well as a few $25 and over. There is something for everyone in just about every price range.

See’s Gift Cards are also available in $25.00 and $50.00 denominations.

I think one of the coolest things that See’s Candies offers it the ability to design your own custom chocolate box, filled entirely with the flavors that YOU CHOOSE. No more tossing out chocolates that you don’t like, or hoping someone else eats them. With the Custom Boxed Chocolates option YOU pick out the sinfully delicious pieces that you want. You can even customize the percentage of how many chocolates in the box you want for specific varieties. You can choose up to 10 different varieties in total.

You can pick from flavors like Dark Almond (one of my personal favorites – it’s packed with A LOT of full size almonds), Maple Walnut, Lemon Truffle, See’s Apple Turnover Truffle, Vanilla Nut Caramel, Apricot Delight, Peanut Butter Pattie, Kona Mocha and many more.

See’s Candies also make great favors for weddings, baby showers, anniversary parties and more.

See’s Candies does have some retail stores (mostly on the West Coast). Thankfully you can order them online making them available to everyone. If my mom was alive today I’m sure she would order from them monthly rather than have to wait for special occasions or my brother to come and visit from California.

To check out See’s Candies for yourself (warning – do not view the site if you are hungry!), visit www.Sees.com. They are also on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/Sees.Candies).

    I love See’s candy!

I LOVE See’s!! Luckily, I live in Arizona, and they are in every mall that I have been to here. So whenever I am shopping at the mall, I stop at See’s and pick out 5 of my favorite pieces (usually butterscotch, marzipan, or milk chocolate butter) to snack on while I am shopping or on my way home. And one of the benefits of going to a brick & mortar store, they always give you a sample–so that you can try something new!
