My husband and I watched The Notebook again as part of my Nicholas Sparks movie marathon. Earlier in the evening we went to the movie theater and saw a comedy, only to come home and watch a very sad movie. We went from one extreme to another.
I remember the first time I saw The Notebook. I heard that it was a very sad movie with a tragic ending. I also heard that it was an incredible love story. I didn’t know what to expect. I did bawl my eyes out at the end. Oh my! I DID NOT see that ending coming.
The movie stars Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling, James Garner, Joan Allen, Sam Shepard and Gena Rowlands.
If you have not seen the movie before, here is a synopsis;
Allie (McAdams) is a young girl from a well off family. Noah if a young man who has to work for his money. One day at a county fair their paths cross and Noah is smitten by the young beauty.
In time their love blossoms, to the dismay of Allie’s parents. They do not think that Noah is good enough for their precious daughter and tey worry that he will hold her back and prevent her from going to college. They actually force the young lovers apart.
Noah cannot get over Allie. Each day they are apart he writes her a love letter, but Allie never replies. After a while he finally gives up and stop writing to her.
One day in town Noah happens across Allie. Allie is now engaged to Lon, a handsome young man who has a wonderful career and money. Noah does not confront Allie. Instead he sort of “snaps” and returns home and purchases a old house that Allie had fallen in love with when they were together. Noah becomes obsessed with building the house to it’s former glory. Even after he finished the house he refused to sell it, not matter what the price.
As Allie is preparing for her wedding she spots an article in a local paper about the house that Noah rebuilt. As soon as Allie saw the photo of Noah all the feelings she had for him came back to her. She had to see Noah again.
Allie visits Noah at the house he rebuilt for her. At first their meeting did not go well but soon their love for one another was reignited. The only problem is Allie is engaged to Lon.
Allie also learns the truth about Noah’s letters.
As you are watching this story unfold before you another story is also being told during the film. This story is about an elderly couple. The woman doesn’t know who she is and can’t remember much. The man tries to entertain her by telling her the story of Allie and Noah. It’s not until the end of the film that we learn that the old gentleman is Noah and the woman who can’t remember is Allie. Noah (as an old man) is reciting the story of their incredible love story to her every day in hopes that she finally remember who he is.
I don’t want to tell you anymore about the story. I don’t want to ruin the VERY unexpected ending.
The Notebook is available where ever movies are sold.
Have you seen The Notebook? What are your thoughts on the film? Do you think it’s an incredible love story, or just a very sad and tragic story? I keep bouncing back and forth. Sometimes as I watch the film I think to myself that this is an amazing love story. Then when the ending occurs I tend to lean towards a tragic love story.
WARNING – You’ll need a box or two of tissues to watch The Notebook.
Nicholas Sparks, who wrote The Notebook, has a knack for writing beautiful love stories intertwined with heartbreak and tragedy.
His most recent film, The Lucky One, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on August 28, 2012. I have a copy of the film and I plan on posting my review on it’s release date. Until then I am going to review a different Nicholas Sparks film leading up the The Lucky One release. Tomorrow’s review is The Last Song.

A chick flick marathon is alway fun in my book. I have mixed feelings about Nicholas Spark movies but they all talk about the power of love. And couldn’t we all need more movies like that
Have a blast this weekend.
Sad! My husband and I both cried watching it! And I have never seen him cry on a movie. Just made us sad to think that might happen to us in our old age.
Both, loved that movie! It was sad but their love story was what a girl dreams about.
I saw the movie first and then read the book a few months later. The movie ending is nowhere near the book ending, especially since something in the book leads to a sort-of-sequel in the book, The Wedding. I love both, but am glad that I had seen the movie first, otherwise I would have been VERY disappointed.
