Are you familiar with Cord Blood?

When my children were born I was asked if we wanted to save their cord blood. I honestly wasn’t familiar with it and I regret not researching it. Now that I know it’s importance I truly wish we had banked our children’t cord blood.

Here is an interesting article about cord blood. I hope that it will encourage you to do your own research and consider it for your own future children.

Blood is thicker at the time of the birth

Is your life about to become all about you, plus one?  At the time of a pregnancy parents to be are expected to take steps for ensuring the coming newborn will be happy, healthy, and a loved new baby.  It’s a time of expectations and a time of preparation because when you welcome your new baby into the world you unconsciously choose to make a promise to protect your little bundle of joy no matter what.

For many families that preparation for the baby’s health starts immediately after the birth, but others will ensure their protection of their coming baby begins almost immediately after finding out about the pregnancy.  Doctors worldwide are encouraging parents and parents to be to become informed about the many ways preparation for a baby’s health and security can begin even before the birth, and to take that action.

One of the ways you can start protecting your baby’s life is to learn more about cord blood, a unique type of umbilical blood that is found in the placenta immediately following the birth.  Once upon a time doctors would consider this disposable waste and throw it away but now hospitals are establishing cord blood banking programs that they encourage families to look into partnering with.

Cord blood’s importance lies within; because within are a unique set of stem cells that are genetically a perfect match to your baby’s blood at any point in his or her life.  These stem cells have the capability of growing into many different types of cells; some of the most important being oxygen carrying red blood cells to restore airflow to muscles and disease fighting immune cells to combat some of the world’s worst diseases like MS, Diabetes, Heart Disease, or Leukemia.

Because of their genetic match to your baby, your doctor will likely inform you of how you can preserve the cord blood to help treat any of these diseases in the future.  The procedure is very safe taking only a few minutes after the baby has already been born so there is no risk to you or your baby’s health.  In the aftermath you will know your partnership with a cord blood bank will keep a fail safe treatment plan ready for your family if ever tragedy strikes.
