Packing lunch for my kids and my husband can sometimes be a challenge. It’s not always easy to make sure they get protein, fresh fruit and vegetables in with every lunch. The school nurse once called me at home to compliment me on the lunch I pack my kids. She said even as a nurse she didn’t pack a lunch as healthy as the one I pack for my kids on a regular basis.
Kids will be kids and they don’t always want to eat healthy foods for lunch. That is why I always toss in something like pretzels or cookies. They know the lunch time “rule”… each the sandwich first, fruit and vegetables next and then the junk food last. That way I know they got all the good stuff into their bodies before they top it all off with a couple of cookies.
I don’t always include a fresh fruit in with their lunch. I do like to toss in a fruit cup or similar product from time to time. It’s good not to get into a lunch time “rut”, that is why I like to add unexpected things in their lunches from time to time.
My kids enjoy fruit cups. They have since they were in elementary school. Their favorites are Del Monte Mandarin Oranges and Del Monte Cherry and Mixed Fruit.
I tend to buy the no sugar added or light syrup varieties, but I’m OK with using the regular kind from time to time too.
Del Monte has two new flavors that I was very excited to try out for myself. The flavors are Diced Pears in extra light syrup with Vanilla & Spice and Diced Apples & Pears in extra light syrup with Caramel. These are not your typical fruit flavors. In a way they seem like grown up flavors, which is fine with me and my kids.
You can clearly taste the vanilla in the Vanilla & Spice variety. It has what appears to be a touch of cinnamon in it.
I LOVE the Diced Apples & Pears with Caramel. It tastes like it should be in the center of a pie!
Both varieties seem more like desserts then they do a fruit cup snack. Grown ups are sure to love these flavors as well as kids.
Each fruit cup contains a full serving of all-natural fruit, is an excellent source of vitamin C, and contains no high fructose corn syrup. Not only are these ideal for school lunches but they are also great for after school snacks. I would rather my child have a Del Monte fruit cup then a bag of chips.
Do you follow Del Monte on Facebook? If not you should check them out. They have a fun Facebook game called “Flavor Boom” you might want to check out. In the game you need to help Del Monte fill up their cups of fruit by selecting healthy ingredients that are found in the new Del Monte Fruit Cup varieties, like apples, pears and vanilla spice. The more cups you fill, the higher your score and the harder the game will get.
When you play the game you can get a $1.00 off coupon which is good towards the two-pack of the new fruit cup flavors.
Here’s How to Play:
- Visit the Del Monte Facebook page
- Click on the “Like” button to like the page and access the “Flavor Boom” application
- Begin the game by selecting either “Pears with Vanilla and Spice” or “Apples and Pears with Caramel”
- Fill each cup by selecting the correct ingredients as they fly through the air. The more cups you fill, the higher your score and the harder it gets.
- After the game is completed, click “Grab a Coupon”
- You will then be prompted to register or login with your contact information (coupon will be ready to be printed at end of registration or login)
You’ll love the new fruit flavors from Del Monte. Look for them on a store shelf near you.
