I have always admired homes with big, beautiful floral displays on the dining room table (centerpieces) and throughout the home. I think that flowers add an elegant touch. They also add beauty and a splash of color to any home decor.
I never see my home as one of those fancy homes with the lovely floral displays. I guess it’s because we have a lot of mis-matched furniture and hand-me-down furniture. My home is far from a “Martha Stewart” home. In fact I think Martha would shake her head and go “tsk-tsk-tsk” if she saw our home. Let’s just say it’s lived in. It’s not messy (I keep a clean home). It’s just that our furniture doesn’t match the carpet or window treatments, or each other. Plus things are worn, chipped or scratched. You can tell a family lives here.
I also worry about flowers and plants when it comes to our dog and five cats. Many things are toxic to them so whenever I do have flowers I have to make sure to keep them some place the cats won’t go, unless we’re around to keep an eye on them.
I do love flowers and -have often thought about taking a floral arranging class at our local high school (an adult continuing education class). My ex-sister in law used to work in a florist and made the most beautiful arrangements for her home. I would love to be able to do that.
I recently did have the opportunity to try my hand at floral arranging and I must say I think I did a pretty good job for a novice.
I received the most beautiful mini Calla Lilies from a company called Flower Muse. Flower Muse is a farm-to-table floral e-tailer which means when you order the flowers they are shipped directly to you from the farm they are grown, not from a 3rd party (“middle man”). My Calla Lilies shipped to me directly from the farm in Quito, Ecuador. It took four days for them to arrive to my door and they arrived in perfectly condition.
I received 50 pure white Calla Lilies, also known as “Crystal White”. Each stem measured about a foot long. They are ideal for using in floral arrangements and hand held bouquets.
Flower Muse sent me an e-mail before my flowers arrived to let me know when they would be delivered, plus to let me know what to do with them as soon as they arrived.
I was instructed to cut at least 0.5-1″ off each stem and place them in 1-1.5″ of clean room temperature water. They is all the water they need since they store water in their stems. The stems will start to firm up within 4-5 hours of being in water.
The flowers arrived in a sturdy cardboard box.
You would think delicate flowers traveling from Ecuador to New York in a box for four days would arrive damaged, brown and/or wilting. That was not the case with these flowers. Even prior to clipping the stems and putting them in water they were beautiful, white and full bloom.
Here are photos of the flowers directly out of the box and before I clipped the stems and put them in water.
After I put them in a vase of water for a few hours this is how they looked. They are simply stunning!
Now that I had these lovely flowers I had to think of some kind of beautiful arrangement to make with them. Since it was Christmas time I wanted to make an arrangement for Christmas that I could use as a centerpiece on our holiday table.
I purchased an inexpensive vase with a design engraved on it. I also picked up some clear flat stones to weigh the vase out. I wrapped the vase with a pretty red and while holiday ribbon too.
I wanted to add some red into the mix of flowers since they were all white. I found a balloon weight at the local dollar store that had red tinsel and tinsel with stars coming out of it. I picked up two and then tore the tinsel pieces out and inserted them among the flowers. The only problem with that idea is that the tinsel was short so it didn’t stick out as much as I had hoped it would. I wanted some of the tinsel to extend out further then the flowers, but it wasn’t long enough. Even so I think the arrangement turned out great.
You can sort of make out the flat clear stones in the bottom of the vase. If you look you can see the red tinsel stuff too. The bow didnt’ turn out as well as I wanted it to. I’m not good with stuff like that.
Here are a few close up shots of my arrangement of Calla Lilies from Flower Muse.
I’ve had the flowers for over two weeks now. Only about 1/3 are left. Most have finally wilted and browned.
The above pictures were taken on December 14, 2012. The last picture I took was the day after Christmas (12 days after I received them) and they still looked pretty good. Most flowers I’ve had in the past only last about a week. These flowers lasted for at least two weeks. Some even longer.
Flower Muse carries a large assortment of flowers. Not only do they carry Calla Lilies they also carry Carnations, Chrysanthemums, Roses, Orchids, Hydrangeas, Peonies, Tulips and many other types of flowers. They are also available in a variety of colors.
They also have a special section for wedding flowers, wedding bouquets and centerpieces.
Why would you want to order your flowers in bulk from Flower Muse? If you happen to be looking for flowers for a wedding you can save a lot of money doing the centerpiece arrangements yourself. Or if you are planning a special dinner party you can create a centerpiece to look exactly the way you want it and save money because you won’t have to pay $$$$$ for a florist to create it for you. You can create the exact look you want with the colors and flowers you think will look best, not what someone tells you THEY think would work best.
Or you can simply create your own arrangements to match your home’s decor or for any specific holidays you want to create a special arrangement for. With proper care your arrangements will last for a couple of weeks.
