Right now it’s just shy of 1:oo PM. I had a late start to my day. Normally during the week I’m up by 5:45 and settled in to get some work done by 7:00 AM after I get my daughter on the bus. Today my day didn’t start until around 11:00 AM. I slept until 10:30 this morning and it felt great. The only downside is that my schedule is out of whack and I’m behind. I haven’t even have breakfast yet. I just haven’t had the chance to stop and make myself some scrambled egg whites and whole wheat toast. Instead I grabbed a two slices of American cheese and a bag of chips. Talk about an unhealthy breakfast! Aside from a little calcium and protein in the cheese there was no real nutritional value. I haven’t even had a chance to take my vitamins and supplements yet.
I do make a conscious effort to eat right. However there are some days where I’m just too busy to stop and make something healthy for me and I tend to grab whatever I can find in the fridge or pantry to hold me over until my next meal. What I need are some grab-and-go goodies that are not only tasty, but also a healthier option then chips or a bagel from the local deli.
I was asked if I wanted to review the ideal grab n’ go protein drink from the makers of Muscle Milk. It’s called Evolve and it’s perfect for busy women like myself (or busy men too). CytoSport™, the maker of Muscle Milk and Evolve, is one of the largest sport nutrition companies in the U.S. and offers a complete line of protein-enhanced products including powders, shakes and bars.
Evolve in an individually packaged drink that comes with an attached straw that you can easily toss into your bag or or grab as you are racing out the door. It doesn’t have to be kept chilled (but it does taste better that way).
Evolve contains something called Tonalin® CLA. I have never heard of this before but I read that it was researched in multiple clinical studies to help reduce body fat and prevent fat regain. Sounds great to me! The CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) is already in our diet as a polyunsaturated, conjugated fatty acid that is found primarily in meat and dairy products.
I am somewhat lactose intolerant due to a surgery I had many years ago. I can tolerate some dairy in small quantities (cheese and yogurt mostly). I was concerned that Evolve might upset my stomach but thankfully it’s lactose free. In addition Evolve is also Gluten Free. The more I hear and read about Gluten, the more I seriously want to eliminate it from my family’s diet too.
Each box of Evolve is 110 calories and contains a whopping 12 grams of high quality protein. According to the CDC website, women (ages 19-70) need about 46 grams of protein daily and men (ages 19-70) need 56 grams. Just one Evolve each day can ensure that you reach your recommended requirements.
Evolve is sweetened with stevia, monk fruit and cane sugar.
In addition to 12 grams of protein, Evolve also contains 20 vitamins and minerals and it’s even an excellent source of fiber.
Evolve is available in five yummy flavors.
- Vanilla Crème
- Mixed Berry
- Café Latte
I’ve had the opportunity to try most of the flavors. The first one I tried was chocolate because I am a choc-o-holic. It was OK. It reminded me of other canned or boxed chocolate drinks I have tried in the past (I won’t mention brands :-)). Don’t take this the wrong way, it’s good. It’s just not as good as chocolate milk you can make with a glass of milk and chocolate syrup. It’s still great to grab n’ go, or even if you want a chocolate “fix”.
I’m not normally a fan of Vanilla flavored beverages, but the Evolve Vanilla Crème is actually really good. In fact it’s my favorite Evolve flavor out of all the ones I’ve tried so far (I’ve tried 4 out of the 5). It has a nice, creamy flavor. It’s very delicious, especially when it’s ice cold. Mmmm… I could go for one right now just thinking about it.
I never liked strawberry milk growing up, so I was a bit “iffy” about the Strawberry flavored Evolve. Surprisingly it was pretty good too. It doesn’t “scream strawberry” as far as the flavor. It’s more subtle. It has the right amount of sweetness without being overly sweet. I think this would go great in a blender with some frozen strawberries and some ice cubes. This would make a great smoothie base.
I wasn’t a fan of the Café Latte. Of the four I’ve tried that was my least favorite flavor. I don’t know why. I normally like Café Latte flavored drinks. Oh well. You can’t like them all, right?
The only one I haven’t tried yet is the Mixed Berry. Evolve is a lot like a milk, and the idea of a Mixed Berry milk sounds like it would taste gross. So I haven’t brought myself to try it. For all I know it’s even more delicious then the Vanilla Crème. I just haven’t had the nerve to try it… yet. I fully intend to try it. I just have to psych myself up for it.
Overall I am pleased with Evolve. I’m still very impressed that it contains 12 grams of quality protein, plus 20 vitamins and minerals. Actually, as I started to write this review I felt horrible about my poor food choices and grabbed myself a box of chocolate flavored Evolve. I’m looking at the vitamins and minerals in contains and I like that I see (a few examples) – 25% Calcium, 20% Vitamin D, 20% Vitamin C, 20% Iron and 20% B-12. Most of the Vitamins and minerals are listed at 20% with a few exceptions that are actually more then that.
Not only does Evolve taste good, you can feel good about feeding your body all these much needed vitamins, minerals and of course protein.
If you are a busy person like me it’s important to keep plenty of on-the-go snacks and meals to help you avoid eating the wrong things. Fresh fruits and veggies (pre-washed, peeled or cut up if needed), string cheese, yogurt and products like Evolve should be refrigerator and pantry staples.
