I try to think of catchy subject lines for my posts. I wanted to simply write TruMoo Review for this post, but every time I thought about it I kept getting the theme song from the 70’s children’s show New Zoo Review stuck in my mind.
♫ It’s the New Zoo Revue, coming right at you…
Where three delightful animals have fun with what they do… ♫
Does anyone remember that show? If not, Google it or look up the theme song on YouTube and you’ll see why writing “TruMoo Review” gets the show’s theme song stuck in my head.
:-)!
Anyway…
Let’s talk about chocolate milk. I used to drink it by the gallon when I was growing up. Since my surgery caused me to be lactose intolerant I can only tolerate milk in very small quantities. As for my husband and my children, they drink it all the time. In fact I think my husband drinks it more than my kids do. He has it almost every morning.
We have used just about every chocolate milk mix on the market, from syrups to powdered mixes. We’ve also used ready to serve chocolate milks.
As a mom I try and keep track of what my kids are eating and drinking. I don’t want them to consume too much fat, sugar and sodium. Soda rarely makes an appearance in our home. They only drink soda if we’re eating out or at a friend’s house. My daughter actually opts for water instead of soda most of the time.
We drink 2% milk at home. I’ve tried to get my family to switch to skim milk but my hubby doesn’t like it.
Whenever my kids or my husband makes chocolate milk it’s essentially adding sugars to their milk, which is something I am trying to avoid – excess sugars.
There has been a lot of debate over the years about banning flavored milk in schools due to their high sugar content. Some chocolate milks have as much sugar as a can of soda. No kidding! I did some research on the Internet and found that one popular brand of ready to drink chocolate milk (individual bottles) contains a whopping 29 grams of sugar. While that might not sound like a lot, those 29 grams are equivalent to spooning approximately 7 spoonfuls of sugar into your child’s mouth. Ewwww!!!! Even if the chocolate milk is fat free or low fat, and does provide valuable Vitamin D and Calcium, the idea of feeding my child that much sugar makes me sick to my stomach.
Earlier this year, Dean Foods introduced a new formulation of their popular chocolate milk, TruMoo. TruMoo is a ready to drink chocolate milk that is available in single serve bottles, half gallon and gallon sizes.
TruMoo now contains 35% less total sugar than the leading chocolate milk competitor. It also has no high fructose corn syrup.
We have a gallon of TruMoo in our fridge. An 8 ounce serving has 140 calories, 2.5 grams of fat and 18 grams of sugar. I compared that to the gallon of 2% milk (white) we have in the fridge. That has 130 calories, 5 grams of fat and 12 grams of sugar. I was shocked to see that TruMoo had less fat than our white 2% milk and only 10 calories more per serving. I walk up and down six flights of stairs at least 3-4 times per day. I think I can lose that extra 10 calories easily enough. 🙂
The fat-free variety of TruMoo served in schools contains only 120 calories per serving and 6 grams of added sugar which is receiving praise from parents and school nutrition directors across the country. There are many schools looking to ban flavored milk because of it’s sugar content.
In addition to being a tasty treat, TruMoo Chocolate Milk also provides eight essential nutrients: calcium, protein, vitamins A, D and B12, riboflavin, phosphorus and potassium.
So how does TruMoo taste compared to other varieties? Pretty good if you ask my hubby and my kids. They have no complaints whatsoever. My husband is especially picky about things. He was also a die hard fan of one popular chocolate milk variety until I explained the sugar content to him. He’s happy to know that TruMoo contains less sugar then his previous favorite brand. As for my kids, they don’t think about things like sugar. They just know it tastes good.
TruMoo gets two thumbs up from this mom.
