Are you a fan of SpongeBob Squarepants? I have to admit that I wasn’t always a fan of the show. When it first came out I refused to watch it. The whole idea sounded pretty silly to me.
First my kids started to watch the show, then my husband. When I heard how much they laughed when they were watching it I caved in and watched a few episodes myself. It’s a very silly show but it can be laugh out loud funny at times. Now we watch SpongeBob Squarepants a lot. It’s almost always on and it’s out “go to” show when there is nothing much on TV to watch, or if we want to watch something funny to make us laugh.
Last year I had the opportunity to interview the voice of SpongeBob Squarepants, Tom Kenny. I interviewed him about his involvement (at that time) with Popsicle. I have done several phone interviews but I have to say talking to Tom Kenny had to be my all time favorite. He was so much fun to talk to. He was also down to Earth. I didn’t feel intimidated like I do talking to other celebrities. From the very start of the conversation Tom make me feel comfortable. I truly enjoyed talking to him.
Later on that year (last year) I was at the Red Carpet (it was actually white) event and after party for the film Frankenweenie. Tom Kenny was there with his lovely wife and beautiful children. I was more star struck with Tom then I was with Tim Burton and the other celebrities that were there. 🙂 I even had the change to talk to Tom and his wife. WOW! They are such nice people. Tom even made a video for my son wishing him a happy birthday (he made one for my daughter too so she wouldn’t feel left out). He even spoke in SpongeBob and his pet Gary’s voices. :-)!!!
Fast forward a little while later. I received an e-mail from Tom asking me if I wanted to review the soundtrack for the new animated holiday special SpongeBob Squarepants: It’s a SpongeBob Christmas. I was glad to do so. I also asked if he wouldn’t mind autographing the copy he sent me. This is what I received.
A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!!
If you would like to review my review you can find it here – It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! New special and fun movie soundtrack. I also wrote about the movie special too.
Here is my original review.
It’s a SpongeBob Christmas was inspired by the holiday classics by Rankin & Bass (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, A Year Without Santa Claus…). Stop motion animation is a long, tedious process. Not only do you have to create a three dimensional figures out of clay, but you also have to painstakingly film literally second by second. Frankenweenie and ParaNorman are recent example of stop motion animation.
In this half hour special, Plankton is up to his old tricks. He has just one Christmas wish – the Krabby Patty formula. Plankton devices a plan to feed the residents of Bikini Bottom fruitcake injected with something called “Jerktonium”, which turns people int jerks. Since he’s always on Santa’s naughty list, Plankton wants to me the residents of Bikini Bottom even bigger jerks then he is in hopes it would bump him up onto the nice list and he’ll finally gets his Christmas wish for the secret formula. The plan seems to work except for one problem – SpongeBob!
I should forewarn you that the songs are very catchy. Santa Has His Eye On Me and Don’t Be a Jerk (It’s Christmas) tend to stick in my head when I watch the holiday episode.
It’s a SpongeBob Christmas will be available on Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on October 15, 2013. It will also contain an Ultraviolet and digital copies.
In addition to the holiday special the combo pack includes bonus episodes.
- Ripped Pants
- SB-129
- Texas
- The Graveyard Shift
- Something Smells
- Jellyfishing
- Dying for Pie
- Wormy
- F.U.N.
- Club SpongeBob
There are also some special features.
- Behind the Scenes – This is a must see. It shows you just how much work went into making the Claymation/puppet characters and what was involved in making the special. It’s pretty cool! SpongeBob was really made out of a sponge.
- Yule Log – A brief cartoon video of a fire in SpongeBob’s fire place while a musical tune plays.
- Two MP3 compatiable songs – “Santa’s Eyes” and “Hot Fruitcake”
- Violent Femmes Sing SpongeBob SquarePants (BD Exclusive)
- More SpongeBob SquarePants Secrets (BD Exclusive)
If you are a fan of SpongeBob you’ll certainly want to add this fun movie (and more!) to your collection.
Look for It’s a SpongeBob Christmas on October 15, 2013 where ever movies are sold.
