Available today on DVD is the thriller I Am ZoZo.
The movie stars a list of unknown actors.
I read a little background on the film before I saw it. The official site is www.IAmZoZoMovie.com. The film is supposedly based on a true experience with a malevolent spirit name ZoZo who comes through to people who use the Ouija board.
I have to admit that I used to use the Ouija board with my friends when we were ‘tweens and teens. I won’t debate whether or not they are 100% legitimate or not, but I can say that my friends and I did have a few peculiar experiences using one – especially me and my friend Christy. The two of us seemed to have a lot of odd occurrences while using the board and shortly there after.
One thing I learned is that you need to say “good bye” when you are done using the board or else the spirits will continue to come through. Uh-Oh! My friends and I never did that. The last time I touched a board was back in the mid-80’s. I guess they were all left open.
ZoZo is said to be a demon spirit who likes to attach it’s self to people (according to the movie’s website).
Like I said, I’m not here to say the Ouija board is real or just a silly thing people do when they get together or at parties (in my case it was sleepovers with my friends). And for the record I am Christian and never missed a day of church growing up (literally – I got pins for perfect attendance :-)). I never saw the Ouija as nothing more than a board game. But I did have weird experiences. Coincidence? I don’t know. I’m just saying that I don’t take it to heart.
The film, I Am ZoZo, is about a group of friends who get together at a friend’s grandfather’s house for the weekend. They do a lot of drinking and just hanging out and enjoying each other’s company.
A few of the friends think it will be fun to play with the Ouija board. One friend is convinced she is talking with a deceased friend through the board. That is until another spirit makes it’s way through. A spirit by the name of ZoZo. ZoZo likes to monopolize the board. He comes off as being very aggressive too.
To prove he is real ZoZo takes a playing card from a deck of cards and hides it in the house. That was enough to freak the friends out, but not enough to get them to stop playing with the board. That is until ZoZo seems to take over one of the friends in a way that will greatly effect all of them for the rest of their lives.

Honestly, I wasn’t overly impressed with the film. First and foremost it was shot entirely with Super8mm. I don’t like that style of film. It’s as if someone taped the entire thing on their personal movie camera. The film Blair Witch reminds me of the same film style. Its as if someone is in the room filming what is going on (like a home movie). I don’t like films shot in that way (I didn’t like Blair Witch for the same reason). It’s not my “cup of tea”, so to speak.
I was hoping for the film to be suspenseful and a bit scary. I didn’t experience any frightening feelings. I had high hopes that something scary would happen and make me jump out of my seat, but it didn’t happen.
I Am ZoZo would be more entertaining by the easily frightened or maybe even a teenage sleepover. For dire hard horror fans you’ll be disappointed. The idea was great, I just don’t think it was executed well enough. I know the story was supposedly based on true life events but the filmmakers could have embellished it a bit with the board flying across the room or a scary face popping up in the window.

I am always on the look out for a good scary movie. Horror movies are my favorite and I love to be scared. This doesn’t sound like it’s gonna scare me though. The trailer didn’t seem that interesting either.

This sounds like a film my son would like. I have to admit that the story seems interesting. Only because like you we used the Ouija board a lot as kids. My sister and I always were asking it questions. I didn’t know you were supposed to say goodbye to the board when you were done. Thanks.
