I am a big hearted person who enjoys doing things to help others. I am a HUGE proponent of “random acts of kindness” (I try and do at least once random act a day if possible). I also try and give to charities as much as I can.
When I learn about a product where the proceeds goes towards a charity I try and purchase those items (if I need them of course). Sometimes even the little things can do a world of good for someone less fortunate.
The company Sseko (pronounced “say-ko”) Designs is one such company. They carry sandals, accessories, scarves and handbags.
The products that Sseko Designs off consumers are handmade by women in poverty stricken countries like Uganda and Kenya. Proceeds from the sales of these products help women to get out of poverty and for most, to save up for college so that they can better their lives, the lives of their family and hopefully some day their country too.
Here is a brief video that sheds a bit more light on Sseko Designs, their story and how they are helping women better their lives.
I was sent to review one of the products from their website. I received to review the Mountain View clutch.
The Mountain View clutch measures 6″ tall (when closed) and 10″ wide. It features a removable wristlet (so you can hang it off your wrist or remove it to make it a true clutch). The bag is fully lined and has two interior pockets. The design is made fro Pendleton wool and the color/design might vary slightly. Each clutch is handmade in Kenya.
The Mountain View in Espresso clutch is made with genuine leather and local Oregon Pendleton Wool. Shades of blue and red adorn this espresso leather clutch with geometric mountain pattern accents that will have you dreaming of your next big adventure! This clutch is handcrafted in Kenya by our partner organization who employs artisans that are ending the cycle of poverty through fair wage employment. The Sseko story is growing. Carry it with you.
I should make note that I am not someone who purchases leather products. Faux (fake) leather, but never real leather.
The bag is gorgeous. The bag snaps closed. When you want to open it you unsnap the flap and it rolls up to expose the contents. When you need to close it you need to roll down the flap and snap it again.
The bag is bigger when opened, however you need to roll the flap closed in order to snap it closed. If you don’t do that the contents of your bag will fall out.
I don’t currently have a camera, except for my cellphone which doesn’t take good photos. Sorry about that.
The wool exterior is very soft and somewhat plush. I was concerned about the colors running when it got wet but so far I have not had the opportunity to test that out. I haven’t used the clutch in the rain. Since it’s made of leather I wouldn’t recommend it getting wet in the first place.
The interior is an ample size. It’s enough room to carry a cellphone (iPhone sized), keys, a change purse and a few make up essentials.
I like the casual (and colorful) design. You can easily use this clutch when you go to work or run errands around town.
Sseko has plenty of other products and designs available. They carry similar clutches but in different colors and designs.
Aside from purchasing a beautiful product you can take heart to the fact that you are helping out those less fortunate to better their lives and the lives around them.
