I am not sure if you follow me on Twitter, but last night I was watching the film Free Birds with my family, while enjoying pizza. The hashtag I was using was #FreeBirdsPizzaParty, among other hashtags. Other bloggers were doing the same thing. If you want to see what they were saying about the film as they were watching it just do a search for that hashtag.
If you haven’t seen Free Birds yet it’s the story of two turkeys – Reggie (voiced by Owen Wilson) and Jake (Woody Harrelson). Reggie is the Presidential pardoned turkey enjoying the good like at Camp David (which includes a lot of pizza). Jake was bred and born in captivity but managed to escape when he was young.
Jake is convinced that the government has a secret time machine. He wants to use it to travel back in time to the first Thanksgiving to make sure that turkey is not on the menu. Jake is actually correct – there is a time machine. He is able to get inside of it (along with unwilling participant Reggie) to go back in time to the first Thanksgiving. There the pair meet up with some of the early settlers (some of them are not so nice) as well as a whole community of turkeys who are doing a good job staying off the settler’s plates. That is until Reggie and Jake come along and mess things up.
Can Reggie and Jake fix things before it’s too late? Will they be able to change the course of culinary history? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Free Birds which is now available where most movies are sold.

The two featurettes, Animating Free Birds: The Main Course and Winging It: Animators in Action are both great “behind the scenes” look at how this movie was brought to life.
My family loved the movie. Even my hard to impress teenagers were laughing at it. My almost 17 year old daughter even asked me if there were plush Free Birds because she loves the baby chicks. She thought they were utterly adorable.
Personally I was impressed by the background. Not only was it very colorful it was also very realistic looking. Autumn is my favorite time of year and watching the film made me miss that season.
It’s a fun movie. The whole family would enjoy it – both young and old. My husband and I laugh a lot when we watch movies or TV. My teens don’t usually (you know how teens can be). For them to be laughing out loud I knew the movie was a hit. 🙂
