I love horses. I have always loved them. I grew up around horses (my sister owned a horse). I think they are beautiful and magnificent creatures. I would love to own a farm and have a few horses. That would be a dream come true.
I used to collect Breyer horses and horse books. One of my favorite horse stories is Misty.
Back in 2002 an animated film called Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron was released in theaters. I never saw the film. I’ve heard about the film, but never actually had the opportunity to see it.
Now the film is available on a Blu-ray combo pack for the first time ever. You can see this film in high definition the way it was meant to be seen.
The film is the story about a young male mustang named Spirit. He lives freely on the Western plains with his mother and other horses that he grew up with.
One day the herd was invaded by military soldiers who captured Spirit and brought him back to their base. They wanted to turn him into a horse that they could ride into battle. The problem was that Spirit did not want to be tamed or domesticated and he found them every step of the way – even getting beaten by a rather cruel soldier.
With the help of a young Lakota Indian brave who was taken prisoner by the soldiers, Spirit was able to escape. However his escape was brief because the young Indian decided to keep Spirit from himself and train him so he could be ridden. Spirit once again refused to be broken of his wild spirit.
I hopes it would encourage him to be more domesticated, Spirit was paired up with the young man’s other horse, a beautful filly named Rain. Instead of teaching Spirit how to be a domesticated horse, Rain and Spirit ended up falling in love. Sadly their romance didn’t last too long because their tribe was invaded by the soldiers, destroying everything in sight and shooting Rain. Spirit was once again captured, except this time he was transferred far away from home on a train to work on building the railroad line.
This time around Spirit lost his will to fight. He lost his love, Rain, as well as his mother and friends. That is until he realized that railroad was heading in the direction of his homeland. Now it is up to Spirit to stop the railroad and find a way to make it back home.
Will he succeed? Who will come to his rescue? What surprises are in store for this most unlikely hero? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, where ever movies are sold.
This movie was wonderful. Initially I was a bit taken by the 2D animation. I am used to the 3D CGI animation that is seen today. Once I started to watch the film that didn’t seem to bother me anymore. In fact the background/scenery is very realistic looking even if the horses and people are drawn in 2D animation. The quality of the film is breathtaking too.
The story is beautiful. It made me cry! Not once but twice.
I can see why this film was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Academy Award® in 2002.
There is not a lot of dialogue in the film. There is some narration. Unlike other films the horses DON’T talk. Spirit’s thoughts are narrated.
The film has a wonderful soundtrack too featuring songs by Bryan Adams.
There are bonus features on the Blu-ray including commentary, a behind the scenes look at the making of the film as well as the animation for the film and even a drawing class on how to draw Spirit.
The film is rated G and has a run time of 83 minutes. The Blu-ray combo pack has a suggested price of $19.99.
