Yeah! The Boxtrolls are finally in theaters as of today (September 26, 2014). Have you had a chance to check it out yet? Personally I tend to stay away from opening weekends for films, especially much anticipated films like The Boxtrolls. I plan on going to see it in the next week or two with my family when the movie is not as crowded.
The film was done in “claymation”, similar to the classic movies like Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and A Year Without Santa Claus. Each and ever charactor in the film was made by hand and the entire world of the boxtrolls and the city above was meticulously created, piece by piece, by hand. I find that very fascinating.
Check out this Behind the Scenes look at the making of The Boxtrolls.
I have more appreciation for a film when I learn about everything that went on behind the scenes to bring a film to life. I don’t think I would have the patience or the skill to create each itty bitty piece by hand.
I am in total awe at how much time and effort was put into bringing this fun family film to life.
Here is a brief synopsis of the film.
A family event movie from the creators of Coraline and ParaNorman that introduces audiences to a new breed of family – The Boxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in the amazing cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town’s villain, Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnifred (Elle Fanning). Together, they devise a daring plan to save Eggs’ family.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you see a lot of Boxtrolls merchandise available for the holiday season. I’m sure after seeing this film many children are going to want their own Boxtroll. 🙂
