I wear glasses. I’ve been wearing glasses since I was in 3rd grade.
In the beginning I hated wearing glasses. So much so my teacher didn’t know I even wore glasses until my mom mentioned it to her months after I got my first pair. I would hide them in my backpack so that my teacher wouldn’t make me wear them. I didn’t want to be called “four eyes” by my classmates. Thankfully they never called me that name or made fun of my glasses. In fact a few classmates liked them so much they wanted to try them on for themselves.
Fast forward to today. I still wear glasses. I could wear contact lenses but I opt to wear glasses. My husband and son wear glasses all the time too and our daughter needs glasses for distance. We’re a family of eye glasses wearers.
Sadly age is starting to affect my eyesight. “Technically” I need bi-focal but I refuse to get them. Not yet. I feel like I’m too young to need bi-focals. Maybe someday.
Having four family members who need glasses and regular eye exams can be costly. If it wasn’t for insurance I don’t know how we could ever afford to get our eyes checked yearly and get new glasses when they are needed. Without insurance a trip to the eye doctor for just one family member (exam, lenses and frames) can cost hundreds of dollars. That is why I am very grateful that we have optical insurance.
We have had VSP Vision Care for several years. It was an option for us when my husband started at his current job years ago. The VSP optical plan was too good to pass up on. We pay a nominal monthly fee for VSP and we get so much in return.
If you are not familiar with VSP Vision Care, it’s the largest national not-for-profit vision care. VSP offers consumers great benefits at the lowest out of pocket cost.
VSP has nearly 66 million members, including my family. That should give you an idea about what a great deal VSP is. It’s easy to see why VSP is the #1 choice in vision care.
What we love about VSP is that VSP members have the freedom to choose between their 30,000+ eye care providers so you can pick one that is convenient for you. I don’t like to be forced to use specific providers. I like the flexibility to choose someone that I think is a good fit for my family. We found a VSP provider two miles from where we live.
In addition to offering consumers comprehensive eye exams provided by highly credentialed doctors, members also get access to great eye wear with more than two dozen brands to choose from. You and your family will find hundreds of frame options to choose from including classic styles to the latest designer frames. Check out how you can get access to great eye wear with VSP.
In addition to lenses and frames, VSP members can also get a discount on lens enhancements like progressive lenses, light-reactive lenses, anti-reflective coating, scratch-resistant coating and UV protection. My husband and I always get light-reactive lenses. I would never get glasses without that option.
The lens enhancements can really add on to the overall price of the glasses quickly. We found that out the hard way prior to becoming VSP Vision Care members when our son needed new glasses and we opted for the scratch resistant lenses and light-reactive option. Those two options literally added hundreds of dollars to the cost of the glasses.
Consumer research has shown that people who have VSP Vision Care play considerably less than they would when purchasing glasses at an optical retailer without the insurance. In fact most people can save an average of $320. That is a huge savings! Especially when you are live on a budget, every penny counts.
