Available now on DVD is the film Phobia, directed by Rory Douglas Abel and stars Michael Jefferson and Emma Dubery.
Before I go any further I must tell you that the cover art has pretty much NOTHING to do with the movie. I don’t even know why they used this grotesque image. At no point do you see a scene even remotely like the one pictured on the cover. This is not a movie about spiders or horrible torture.
Phobia is the story of a man named Johnathon. Johnathon suffers from agoraphobia – the fear of being outside of his home. He is literally a prisoner in his own home.
He was not always that way. He did enjoy a normal life. That is until his beloved wife was killed in a car accident. For some reason that trigger this physiological condition in him. Instead of moving on with his life after his wife’s death, Johnathon is trapped inside him home and his own little world.
Watching his life at home reminds me of the film Groundhog’s Day. He pretty much does the same thing all the time. That is because there is only so much he can do confined to his home.
Johnathon does have friends on the outside -a lady named Bree who brings Johnathon his groceries, his best friend and his therapist. Luckily he is able to work from home.
Johnathon wants to move on with his life, but strange visions he keeps having seem to be getting worse – much worse. He’s seeing things that may, or may not, really be there. This could all have been triggered by a violent home invasion he experienced.
Johnathon is having visions of an evil entity and his deceased wife. Are they real? Are they imaginary? Are they evil? Is he going mad or is something else at play? To find out you’ll need to pick up a copy of Phobia.
I was not impressed by the film at all. It just dragged. I wasn’t frightened at all. The movie just seemed to go no where. Even the weird visions he has, like a person with spider legs, failed to impress me.
The visions Johnathon has are just that – visions. They don’t seem to be harming him in any way. It’s not like a malevolent spirit is pushing him down stairs or trying to kill him. They are just visions.
It’s had to tell if the visions he is having are real (ghosts or evil spirits) or imply a product of his imagination and phobia.
To be honest the scariest, most interesting part of this film was the movie poster which had nothing to do with the movie. Go figure.
I’m sure some people will find this film entertaining. Remember, a review is just one person’s opinion. Like my mom used to always tell me “One man’s meat is another man’s poison“. Simply put, just because I didn’t like this film doesn’t mean you won’t.
Here is the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.
