My husband and I have not started Christmas shopping yet for our kids. Usually we’re done by the end of October! Due to several unexpected car repairs and other expenses we simply haven’t had the funds to do any Christmas shopping. HOPEFULLY SOON!
We’ve had our kids make up a “wish list”. Our son never really wants anything – literally! Even as a little boy he never really wanted anything. This year he wants a movie camera. The two he showed me were $900 and $1,500. Yikes! No way! I hope he has other ideas.
Our daughter on the other hand has a list a mile long. She normally does.
One of the items on her “wish list” are books. That’s great. I love that she wants books to read, but she’s not telling me what title or what author! She needs to narrow that down because there are millions of books available and I want to make sure I get ones she’ll actually read.
I received to review two books from New York Times Best Selling Author David Baldacci to review – The Escape and The Finisher. Since my daughter was asking for books for Christmas, and I’d like to encourage my son to read more books, I gave them each a book. I gave my daughter The Finisher and my son The Escape.
Books are not only great gifts they are also good to have on hand for cold, wintery days where going outside is not an option. Our daughter especially can’t be out in the cold. She has a condition called Raynaud’s Disease where the cold causes her blood vessels to spasm. Her hands LITERALLY turn pure white – actual white – when she’s cold. She complains of being cold even in 60 degree temperatures. Needless to say when it’s cold outside our daughter stays indoors. That is why book are great because at least she’ll have something to do and she won’t be bored.
As of this writing neigher of my kids have finished the books yet, but I know my daughter is more than half way through so she must like the book. I asked her what her thoughts are and she said it’s “good”. She asked if there were more books in the series.
My son has read several pages in the book. Maybe what could translate into a chapter or two. He’s not much of a reader. When I asked him his thoughts he just shrugged his shoulders and said “It’s alright”.
My daughter said she’d read The Escape when she’s done with The Finisher, even if my son it’s done reading it yet.
Here is some information about both David Baldacci, as well as information about the author himself.
About The Escape (Book 3: John Puller series)
A prison unlike any other. Military discipline rules. Its security systems are unmatched. None of its prisoners dream of escaping. They know it’s impossible . . . until now.
John Puller’s older brother, Robert, was convicted of treason. His inexplicable escape from the country’s most-secure prison makes him the most wanted criminal in the country. Some in the government believe that John Puller represents their best chance of capturing Robert alive, and so Puller is ordered to bring in his brother to face justice.
But Puller quickly discovers that his brother is pursued by others who don’t want him to survive. At the same time, Puller is pushed into an uneasy, fraught partnership with Veronica Knox, an agent who may have an agenda of her own.
They dig more deeply into the case together, and Puller finds that not only are Knox’s allegiances unclear, but there are troubling details about his brother’s conviction. It becomes clear that someone out there doesn’t want the truth to ever come to light. As the nationwide manhunt for Robert grows more urgent, Puller’s masterful skills as an investigator and strengths as a fighter may not be enough to save his brother—or himself.
About The Finisher (Ages 10+)
Vega Jane was always told no one could leave the town of Wormwood. She was told there was nothing outside but a forest filled with danger and death. And she always believed it – until the night she saw Quentin Herms run away.
Vega knows Quentin dididn’tust leave, he was chased. And he left behind a trail of clues that point to a dark conspiracy at the heart of Wormwood. To follow the clues will attract the attention of influential people willing to kill to keep their secrets. To stay safe, Vega just needs to keep her head down and her mouth shut. There’s only one problem – Vega Jane is not the kind of girl who walks away from a fight.
Master storyteller David Baldacci introduces an unforgettable heroine who must think fast, hit hard, and defy all odds to uncover the truth.
