Do you want to feel old real quick? Think about this – the film Edward Scissorhands is celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary this year.
Twenty five years!!!
Wow… I feel old. I remember when the film first came out.
Twentieth Century Fox Entertainment has released a beautifully remastered 25th Anniversary edition of this fun, family film.
Edward Scissorhands stars Johnny Depp as Edward, Winona Ryder as Kim, Dianne Wiest as Kim’s mom Peg, Anthony Michael Hall, the late Vincent Price, Kathy Bates and Alan Arkin, to name a few.
Kim and her family live in a “pastel paradise” known as Suburbia. Everyone’s home looks the same (for the most part) and it would appear that the residents of Suburbia are almost robotic – their lives seem to be the same day after day. That is why the ladies of Suburbia are desperate for some gossip and some excitement to happen.
Peg, the local Avon lady, visits her neighbors trying to sell the latest products. The only problem is that no one is really interested in what she has to offer anymore. She needs to venture outside of town looking for new customers.
The first place she visits is a creepy mansion on the edge of town. From outside the walls the home appears to be OK. Once inside the gate the Peg finds a lush, beautiful garden and a broken down house.
For some unknown reason she believes someone lives in the house and enters on her own. While searching for the owner she makes a startling discovery – a young boy hiding in the corner of a attic-like room. What is even stranger is that the young man doesn’t have hands – instead he has scissors where his fingers would be.
Feeling sorry for the young man, and thinking she can help fix his scars with Avon make up, Peg insists that he come home with her.
Once at Peg’s home it becomes evident that Edward will have a hard time fitting in. Because he has scissors for hands he tends to cut and poke holes in everything he touches.
Peg’s daughter (Rider) is also not pleased that her mom invited a creepy guy to stay with them.
Edward finds that he is great at cutting hedges into fun designs and shapes. This skill impresses the neighbors and soon Edward is cutting everyone’s hedges.
One of Peg’s neighbors, Joyce, an un-faithful housewife, wants Edward to take his skill to the next level and open up a hair salon. She later accuses him of rape after he refused her advances.
To make matters worse, Kim’s boyfriend (Hall) used Edward to break into a home, and Edward is being blamed for it.
While all this craziness is going on, Edward is secretly crushing on Kim (Rider).
Will the people of Suburbia think of Edward as a monster for all the things he’s accused of doing? Can Edward make people see the real person he is inside and not just his scissorhands? Will he ever get Kim to see him for the man he is? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Edward Scissorhands, the 25th Anniversary edition, available where movies are sold.
There is even a gift set version that comes with custom paper dolls, a heart shaped cookie cutter and a topiary air freshener that smells like fresh cut grass.
This is a fun, family movie. It might seem like a “dark” film, due to the nature of Edward’s hands. But it’s not scary at all. Edward has a sweet face that makes up for his scary looking hands.
I wouldn’t recommend this for little kids due to the rape accusations and burglary, but other than that its a fun film. The film is rated PG-13.
I enjoyed this film the first time I saw it and still enjoy it today – 25 years later. Johnny Depp really puts his heat and soul into every character he portrays.
I also enjoyed how they made Suburbia look and the interesting cast of characters that reside there. It’s certainly a very creative and unique film.
Of course there are plenty of bonus features worth checking out.
Look for Edward Scissorhands: 25th Anniversary Edition where ever films are sold.
Did you see the film? What did you think about it? Do you have a favorite character or scene?
