Available today on Digital HD is the inspiring film BatKid Begins. The film will be released on Blu-ray/DVD on October 6, 2015.
Some people might recall a special event that took place a couple of years ago. The whole city of San Francisco turned it’s self into Gotham City in honor of a little boy name Miles.
Miles Scott has leukemia, which is a form of cancer. Miles was granted a wish from the Make-A-Wish organization, like many deserving children are. Miles dream was to be Batman.
The wonderful people at Make-A-Wish granted Miles’ wish. They thought they would do a little acting and have Miles dress up like Batman (along with a larger version) and defeat the Joker and Penguin. They never expected that this one wish would unit an entire city and touch the lives and hearts of people from around the world.
News of Miles’ wish traveled near and far. Suddenly the couple of hundred volunteer actors turned into thousands of people who helped turn Miles’ wish into an incredible reality.
The film, BatKid Begins, is all about what went on “behind the scenes” to turn this wish into a reality. The documentary features interviews with those involved, plenty of footage and some awesome graphics to add to the mix. It also features a lot of places around San Francisco (aka “Gotham City”) which made me wish I could go back there. I haven’t been there in 37 years since I was not much older than Miles.
This documentary can be enjoyed and appreciated by those young and old. I’m pretty sure most kids (even some adults) will wish they could be Batman for a day.
I would suggest having a box of tissues on hand too when you watch this. Yes, it’s heartbreaking that a young boy has to deal with chemotherapy and dealing with a life threatening disease. For me, most of the tears were “happy tears” because the film is very moving and touching. It made my heart smile knowing that so many strangers would go to such lengths to make a sick little boy’s dream come true.
No one involved with this wish ever could imagine how it turned out. Thanks to the incredible power of social media (Facebook, Twitter…) this event turned into a global sensation. There is even a short film on YouTube that documents Mile’s very special day.
I read a quote from somewhere that I thought was so fitting for this touching documentary;
In the end, the film leaves audiences to decide: did Miles need the world for inspiration? Or did the world need Miles?
That is so true! I think the world needed someone like Miles to bring everyone together for the greater good. It’s so amazing to see total strangers working together on a good cause. I wish more people could do wonderful things like this. It would make the world a brighter place.
