Opening in select theaters across the country tomorrow is the dark comedy Don’t Worry Baby, written and directed by Julian Branciforte.
Don’t Worry Baby stars John Magaro (Carol, The Big Short, Woody Allen’s Upcoming Series). Chris McDonald (Happy Gilmore, Thelma and Louise), Dreama Walker (CBS’s The Good Wife), Tom Lipinski (USA Network’s Suits) and Talia Balsam (No Strings Attached, AMC’s Mad Men).
The film was filmed in the director’s actual Chinatown apartment. It was also filmed at other New York City locations including a pre-school owned by the director’s parents on the Upper East Side. All other locations (bars/restaurants/etc.) were owned by filmmakers’ friends and family.
Robert (Magaro) is a struggling artist/photographer. He doesn’t have the best relationship with his philandering father Harry (McDonald).
To make ends meet, Robert works at a daycare owned by his parents.
Robert’s mother in not around much. She is aware of her husband’s affairs, especially with younger women.
One such one night stand with a woman named Sara Beth resulted in a child, Mason. Robert has made arrangements for her to put her daughter (their daughter?) in their preschool.
There is just one small problem… Robert had a one night stand with Sara Beth too, the same week his father did. Meaning it’s very possible that he is Mason’s father – not Harry.
The trio agree to get a paternity test (Robert, Harry and Sara Beth). It will take a few weeks for the results to come back. In the mean time, each man has the opportunity to get to know Mason.
Who is Mason’s real father? Who would make the better father for Mason – struggling photographer Robert or the much older Harry who has a weakness for beautiful young women and prone to having affairs. Robert has also never been a father before, but at the same time, Harry is a father and didn’t exactly do a good job of it. There are “pros and cons” to both men.
To find out who is the father you’ll need to go see Don’t Worry Baby. Look for it in a theater near you.
This was a sweet movie.
When I saw the trailer I knew I had to see the film because I was curious to see who Mason’s father turned out to be.
Although classified as a “dark comedy,” I would consider this more of a “dramady” (part drama, part comedy).
Besides the obvious lesson learned in this film (don’t have one night stands and if you do make sure you use protection), I think the ultimate goal of the film is that that modern family is different than a traditional family – and there is NOTHING wrong with that. At least that was what I took away from the film.
If you are looking for something to do this weekend, check out Don’t Worry Baby if it’s playing in a theater near you.
The film has a Facebook page in case you are interested in checking it out.
