Movie Review: The Comedian

Now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download is the comedy film, The Comedian.

The film stars the legendary Robert De Niro as well as Danny DeVito, Harvey Keitel, Edie Falco, Leslie Mann and Patti LuPone.

De Niro stars as Jackie Burke. Jackie was once a talented comedian who stared in a popular television series.

The years have not been well for Jackie. He’s much older now and his glory days are long behind him. Instead of being a popular actor/comedian with a huge following, he’s pretty much a washed up has-been playing at venues with just a handful of people.

Even his younger brother (DeVito) and sister in law (LuPone) feel like it’s time for him to call it quits.

During one of his less then impressive shows, Jackie gets into a fight with some of the patrons who are making fun of him. Jackie gets into a fight with them and ends up being charged for the assault.

Jackie is forced to do community service as part of his sentence. He has to serve food at a church. While there he meets a young woman by the name of Harmony (Mann). The two hit it off immediately and strike up a friendship. Harmony is the daughter of a Florida real estate mogul/mobster (Keitel).

Harmony thinks that Jackie is very funny, which inspires him to want to try and get back in the game. The problem is that his comedic style is not in tune with today’s crowd.

It’s hard to tell if the relationship between Jackie and Harmony is strictly friendship, more of a father/daughter relationship or maybe even a touch of romance (there is a huge age difference). I see it as more of a friendship. Other people might disagree.

Will Jackie ever be able to make a comeback, or will he have to face the fact that his 15 minutes of fame is finally over. To find out you need to pick up a copy of The Comedian. Look for it where ever movies are sold.

I have always liked Robert DeNiro. I enjoyed him in the Godfather series, Goodfellas and Men of Honor. I also think he was funny in the Meet the Parents franchise. I know he can be funny, but sadly, I didn’t find him that funny in this film.

First and foremost there was a lot of foul language in this film. I am a firm believer that you can be funny without dropping a lot of “f-bombs” and other foul words. Do people really find curse words MORE funny than non-curse words?

I found his character in The Comedian not very likable. He did have his moments, but over all I couldn’t connect with this character. There was just something about his character in this film that I didn’t really like.

The Comedian has an all star cast. I was impressed when I read on IMDB who was in this film. Sadly, even with a stellar cast this film failed to impress.

I did like Leslie Mann in this film. The character she played resembled other characters she played in other films (I guess that would make her a bit type-cast?). She was the only shining star in this otherwise lackluster film.

I also feel like this story is nothing new. It’s almost like I’ve seen similar stories play out in other films.

Personally I was not a big fan of this film, but that is just MY personal opinion. Other people might absolutely love this film. Like my mom used to always tell me, “one man’s meat is another man’s poison,” meaning just because one person likes something doesn’t mean another person will.

There are bonus features on the DVD (I have the DVD version) including deleted scenes, Backstage with The Comedian and a Red Carpet and Q&A with the stars. I watched the deleted scenes and Backstage with The Comedian. I didn’t get around to watching the final bonus feature.

Have you seen the film? If so, what did you think of The Comedian? I would love to hear your thoughts on the film.

Below is a trailer for the film for your enjoyment.
