I didn’t get a sweet 13, 16, 18 or even 21 party. (never had parties actually). I spent my 18 bday walking a cemetery (I love cemeteries/old) while my mom fought with her (now ex) husband on the phone. My hubby tried to make up all those years and take me sky diving on my 21st bday. So, sometimes things do look up over time. My mom took each of us kids out to our own dinner/movie or something small like that when we was little. She would allow us to pick out one outfit or reasonable priced toy/item. I was extremely sad and it hurt that I felt know one (family/friends) cared to celebrate my bday and yet the cared to celebrate others in such fashions. But it was a tough lesson for me to learn about life and that it isn’t the end of the world. Your daughter will learn that sometimes you just have to live with in your means and appreciate the things we have. We lived next to the coast, within driving to the mountains and very close to disneyland/six flags and such. On special occasions we would go as a family to these locations after saving and selling a few things to pay for the gas/fish and chips for the day. Those are the best memories though and now I rather have those memories than throw an expensive party for people who I barley know or won’t be associated with in 10 years (I don’t talk to anyone I talked to in high school. Besides hubby, I suppose him being my husband, I need to talk to him lol). In the end, don’t blame yourself or feel bad. Do what you can do best and one day, she will understand.
