A great gift for Dads and grads

Keurig 2.0 brewing system

Mother’s Day has just passed. It’s now time to turn out attention to Father’s Day and another special day for many families – graduation.

Our daughter graduates from high school next month. I can’t believe I have a college bound child. Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday she was heading off to Kindergarten for the first time. Back then all she cared about were her toys. These days she wants a car and has her first real job. Sigh…

I have no idea what my kids have planned for Father’s Day. I used to purchase gifts and cards for my kids to give my husband for Father’s Day, but now that my daughter has her own money and my son has his own money too, I think it’s time that they buy their own gifts.

We’re still not sure how we can afford anything for our daughter’s graduation. Her birthday is in a few weeks, as well as senior prom (and graduation). Prom alone is costing us a lot.

If you are looking for gift ideas for Dad, or even a future high school (or college) graduate, I have a gift idea for you – a Keurig brewer.

Many dad’s enjoy a great cup of coffee (or two) in the morning. College students often turn to coffee to help them cram for a big test. When I was in college I drank so much coffee I’m surprised I didn’t bleed coffee. Ha Ha. Going to school full time and holding down two part time jobs – all while maintaining my 3.75 GPA – required that I be able to function on very little sleep. I drank way too much coffee back then.

The Keurig 2.0 brewing system is a great gift option. It provides you with two different brewing options – single cup and multiple cups.

brew size

I normally drink just one cup of coffee in the morning. There are days where I need more than one. I have been known to drink an entire pot of coffee on my own.

Growing up my mom always had a pot of coffee handy for my dad so he could enjoy a cup at any time.

The Keurig 2.0 brewing system allows users to prepare an entire carafe of coffee with the same brewer. All you need is the larger K-cups that were made especially for this brewing system. They look similar to the regular size K-cups, but much larger.

The larger K-cups come in a variety of flavors – 400 to be exact. The K-cups are available from popular brands like Green Mountain, Lipton and Starbucks. You can brew tea and other beverages right into the carafe using the 2.0 brewing system.

The Keurig 2.0 works the same way as the regular Keurig. Make sure it has plenty of water (especially if you are brewing a beverage into the carafe), pop in your favorite K-cup, press the button and wait for the carafe to fill up.

The 2.0 has the ability to read the K-cup you are using and will automatically set it’s self to the optimum brewing settings. You also have the option of making the beverage stronger and changing the cup size. You can choose between 4 ounces up to 30 ounces (carafe).

Depending on which brewer you have the water reservoir will hold between 40 – 8o ounces of water. I appreciate the larger one. It doesn’t need to be filled up as often unless you use the carafe feature a lot.

I have the Keurig 2.0 K550 brewing system. It has the most “bells and whistles.”

  • 10 Brew Sizes
  • 80 oz. Removable Water Reservoir
  • 2.8″ Color Scale Touch display – Large and easy to read.
  • Strength Control – If you like your brew to be stronger, more flavorful, you can select the “strong” brew option.
  • Programmable Controls – Make the brewer do all the work for you.
  • Customizable User Interface
  • Wallpaper – You can change the background on the control panel display from solid colors to designs.
  • Nightlight – The water reserve lights up in your choice of colors. It’s not too bright. It’s just enough light to help you negotiate around your kitchen late at night without putting the kitchen light on.
  • Hot Water on Demand Function – Great to have if you want to brew a cup of traditional tea with a tea bag, or you want hot water for oatmeal.

The Keurig 2.0 is also great for entertaining. Not only could your guests brew their favorite K-cup, you can also brew a whole pot of coffee to serve multiple guests with the same brew. That saves on K-cups too since you need just one to brew the carafe and not multiple K-cups.

The Keurig 2.0 is available in different brewers (different options) and they range from approximately $120 – $200.

I love being able to brew a whole pot (carafe) of coffee. That is my favorite feature when it comes to this brewer. I also like to be able to brew just hot water which I use for oatmeal and “cup of soup” meals.

I am often changing the wallpaper and night light colors. I like the ability to set them up to reflect my mood or personal preferences.

Keurig 2.0

The huge water reserve is great. I hate going to make a cup of coffee and finding that the water level is low. My kids use the brewer too and always neglect to fill it up with water.

The brewer is also attractive looking so it would look great on your counter and not like an “eye sore.”

The ONLY downside to this brewer is that you can only use Keurig branded K-cups. You cannot use generic or “make your own K-cup” types of cups. ONLY Keurig.

For me that is not a problem. The K-cups I buy all the time from Costco are Keurig branded K-cups so the brewer works fine. However I also use K-cups that are not Keurig branded – a vanilla cappuccino that I love and my husband’s favorite dark chocolate hot chocolate. Those cups won’t work in the brewer. That is the only downside, especially because I have several boxes of both of these. Now I can only make them when I visit my father (he has a regular Keurig brewer and not the 2.0).

According to a Consumer Reports article, Keurig is going to make it possible to use a My K-Cup refillable K-cup that will work with the 2.0. That means you can fill it with your favorite coffee (it’s refillable and reusable). If you have older K-cups you could cut them open and pour the contents in the My K-cup and use it like you normally would. So that is an option and I think that makes the 2.0 more appealing.

Other than the K-cup issue I have no qualms about the 2.0. Everything else about it I like.

The Keurig 2.0 can be found at many retail locations.
