Shhh… want to hear a secret? My family enjoys watching the Disney Channel. That includes me, my husband, our 16 year old daughter and almost 14 year old son. Our kids might not make that fact known (although I know that their friends also watch shows on that channel). My husband and I find ourselves watching the series Jessie. We also used to watch Lizzy McGuire and Even Stevens all the time too. Do you remember those shows? I wish they would bring them back. They were fun to watch.
I think we can all agree on one “guilty pleasure” – Disney Teen Beach Movie. 🙂
When I first told my family about the movie they all sort of rolled their eyes at me. After the promos started to air on TV my daughter said it looked good and would watch it. My son sort of went along with it (I don’t think he cared one way or another). My husband on the other hand said it looked “silly”. Really? That is why I catch him watching it whenever it’s airing on TV? LOL! He MIGHT have thought the movie was silly at one point, but now he appears to enjoy it. While it still is a bit silly at times, it’s still fun to watch. And the songs are very catchy. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself singing the songs to yourself.
Even though the movie just premiered on TV, it’s now available on DVD.
Disney Teen Beach Movie is this generations “West Side Story meets Grease mixed with a little Beach Blanket Bingo“.
Disney Teen Beach Movie is the story of Brady (Ross Lynch from Disney’s Austin & Ally) and McKenzie/”Mack” (Maia Mitchell is from the ABC drama The Fosters). The couple spent an amazing summer together on the beach. Sadly McKenzie has to put an end to the summer romance because she promised her mother she would go to private school. Since her mother had passed away she feels like she needs to fulfill that promise to her. She tells Brady that they need to break up.
Heartbroken McKenzie decides to take one last ride on the surf before heading to the airport. The waves are tall and strong. McKenzie feels she can handle them but Brady worries she won’t survive. Brady races out to get McKenzie before it’s too late. The young couple gets swept under the massive waves.
When the couple wake up they find themselves on a beach that looks strangely familiar to Brady. That is because it’s the site of his favorite movie, Wet Side Story. Some how the couple were transported into the movie that Brady watches all the time on TV.
McKenzie is desperate to get back because she needs to board a plane and doesn’t want her aunt upset with her. Brady on the other hand sees this as an opportunity to have some fun.
In the movie Wet Side Story two main characters from rivaling groups meet and fall in love. Tanner (who looks a lot like a young Maxwell Caulfield from Grease 2 mixed in with a little Zack Efrom) is a part of the beach/surfing crowd and Lela is from the rival biker gang. Both groups are trying to stake claim to the beach restaurant, Big Momma’s. Accidently the main characters fall in love with Brady and Mack, not each other. This changes the course of the film. In order to set things right Brady and Mack have to find a way to get Tanner and Lela to fall in love with each other.
Will Brady and Mack be able to set things right before it’s too late? Will they ever be able to find their way back to the modern world? And what will happen when they return – will McKenzie still head off to the private school? In order to find out you’ll need to pick up a copy of Disney Teen Beach Movie, available today (July 30, 2013) where ever DVDs are sold.
The concept of the film is a fun idea (imagine being whisked away back in time and/or into a movie). The movie is a bit corny and silly at time, but its still a lot of fun to watch. The music is very catchy and enjoyable. I thought the music MIGHT get annoying after a while, but honestly, I enjoyed the music. I loved seeing the big dance scenes too. It reminded me of an Annette Funnicello and Frankie Avalon movie. Those movies were before my time, but I have seen them on TV over the years.
This is a fun movie, ideal for the summer months.
Make sure you take the time to check out the bonus features including a behind the scenes look and a never before seen musical number.
